But there aren't people with cancer who got it from being raped. HIV is completely out of control.

What about the people who have/had cancer and continue to smoke? I have a friend who's only now regrown his hair back from chemo and he thinks smoking is a great way to celebrate surviving cancer

People who get HIV usually get it from their own stupidity (not including those born with it from their PARENTS stupidity.. :() so I say cancer, since there are so many forms of it that you can't prevent.

Any chance that I would take up smoking were eliminated from my father, who has been off of smoking for I wanna say over 15 years and my gf who tells me stories of how smokers in the hospital who aren't dying of cancer, literally suffocate to death.

Well that's a crying shame. That's nearly just as bad as having unprotected sex with multiple partners.

Your "solution" is for people to simply not exist. Calling that a way to prevent cancer is misguided at best.

You could not smoke, jump in radioactive waste, or live healthier. Another thing though purely economical is how much money would be gone from if these things were too.

I'd cure cancer. It can affect anyone at anytime. While HIV/AIDS can as well, it doesn't suddenly occur the same way that cancer does.

My grandmother had just been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. :(

In a boxing match! No seriously, cures for these 2 illnesses are a hot topic right now so...

They're a hot topic RIGHT NOW?!?

The hell has been the delay? Too busy making *****-pills to notice the hundreds of thousands dropping dead around you?

TEDDY!

I think he's suggesting we cull babies, rather than simply saying make them not exist.

I included that for all the "population control" people

That's the option that I'm leaning towards :o Both are HORRIBLE, but at the same time, the world really is outrageously overpopulated. I know a lot of people's reasons are "cancer, because my family has been affected by it," but you specifically said to not think about the fact that family could be involved. So, in trying to think about this in a detached way, disease is really the main threat to the human species at the moment.

considering i'm a surgical tech and have already been poked by a dirty needle and splashed in the eye during surgery, HIV/AIDS.

Sorry Chaos... you can't get HIV that way. Only drugs and sex and rape that you could have easily avoided. :whatever: [/Other people in this thread]

But on another note, hey look! Someone who proves HIV doesn't just happen to those that 'deserve' it.

Good grief :csad: That's part of why I'd be terrified to work in a hospital. My mother has been a nurse for decades, and back before there were as strict of safety regulations, she somehow contracted hepatitis C :down

Yeah I was lucky I didn't contract anything. And both instances happened during a 3 month training period. I'm freaked to think of the odds working full time as my career.

I'm going with cancer here.

I honestly prefer both but thats not what the poll is about. I choose cancer because I've seen the effects it has on people, who I would say doesn't deserve it, but you can't do anything about it. That's not the case with HIV. Like it has been said before in here, HIV is preventable unless by a random circumstance. A friend of a friend of mine is in the hospital right now, cuz he was stupid and had unsafe sex and contracted HIV. I feel sorry for him and then I also don't because there's no reason nowadays for unsafe sex with random people. However, even though he's in the hospital, friends who know his status go ahead and have unsafe sex as well, thinking it won't happen to them, and this may sound very evil of me, but presenting them with a cure for it just seems like an easy way out and a reason to have unsafe sex more than usual.
And I know someone would bring up the cigarette thing as a response for cancer, but liek other people have said in here, smoking is not the only thing that causes cancer. I think cigarette smokers are dumb as well, especially when they know what cigs will do to them.

Cancer is a pretty horrible way to die from the stories my gf gives from the ICU. HIV is quite livable as Magic Johnson can attest to.

Not everyone has the same bank account as Magic Johnson though. He's lucky to not have full blown aids.

Both of these diseases are horrible and I've known people that died on both ends. I would cure either one and be happy but I see cancer as more threatening . Aids is somewhat avoidable but Cancer can strike just about anyone based upon the way we live.

But do you think curing cancer would cause more people to start smoking or cause current smokers to smoke more? I mean, if you get cancer; "**** it", they can cure it.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer for sure, but it's absolutely not the only type. There are a lot of other types that smoking isn't a factor in at all. Bad diet, maybe, but not smoking. Besides that, smoking brings a whole host of other health issues besides cancer risk that people ought to be a lot more afraid of like emphysema, heart disease, high blood pressure, and many other negatives. Plus it makes you stink and impacts your breathing in general.

Cancer hands down.

As others have already said, a lot of people(not all obviously)who got HIV, were doing risky things to begin with. HIV can be avoided, Cancer can't...nuff said.

For all you people arguing that cancer is unavoidable, I assume you're all getting a good helping of antioxidants everyday. Or are you all full of free radicals!? :cmad:

That's the only negative thing I would find with the cure for cancer.
But the way I see it is if there's a cure for all kinds of cancer, where for a large population of people it is unnavoidable, we'd have to accept smokers being even more stupid by smoking more. As opposed to HIV, where other than rape or inherited genes and freak accidents, it IS avoidable.
