The same level of detail has been perfectly fine for almost every other Superhero film.
To a point. That argument works with the old Superman movies. But the previous Batman, Spider-Man, Superman suits had a lot of "texture" and detail to them. I'm all for minimalism, but there could be a bit more "to" it. But then, it is a quick manipulation, so that's to be expected. I don't think "teching" it up a bit is the answer. Instead, it could look more organic, and have some texture to it.
Maybe some of it is because people genuinely like the direction Nolan has taken with the suit. Yeah, it's techy and busy, but it works for many people who aren't comic extremists and can appreciate different interpretations of the Batman character. It's a fitting representation of the Batman character and works within the realm of Nolan's movie-verse.
Pretty sure I said "to each his own". I thought that covered it. "Fitting" is relative.

Also, it's not just the legs - you've forgotten the ridiculous man-bra contraption as well.
I hate this outfit. I just hate it. The basic concept is great. The execution is awful.
You said: "It is, but I'd rather watch the movie with a free mind and enjoy what's coming at me instead of focusing on the bottom of the screen everytime Batman's on it to make sure the leg section is not too visible so I won't have to hear the audience complain about how "sectioned and ugly and unpractical and artificial" it looks.
The problem is...the design is so "look at me" that you look at it. In other words, it's not just awful looking, but distracting as well.
Look at the stupid colored "texture" on his abs. What's sad is that that Robocop shot looks less "busy". And now I'm noticing that even his freaking elbows have concentric circles on them.
If the new suit is gray...what did he do, just forget to paint it?
