I came across this story with no prior knowledge of the Disney cash cow known as "Hannah Montana". Apparently ticket brokers and scalpers have been snatching up tickets and reselling them at an average of $214 when the promoter capped the price at $64 dollars as to make the show affordable for families. Now suddenly because kids are sad and parents are involved, a couple Attorney Generals from various states are investigating these ticket brokers. Most of you that know me on here, know I am a huge fan of the free market, supply and demand, and capitalism. I just wanted to gauge everyone's feelings on the general practice of scalping....Have you bought scalped tickets? have you scalped tickets yourself? or any other thoughts you might have on the subject......

Yes, I have bought them in the past because there was an event I wanted to go see so badly I would pay any price. Nowadays with the technological advances I can usually order them earlier so I don't have to deal with that. But I have done it before.

The problem is, they subverted the authentication process on Ticketmaster.com using a computer program enabling someone to purchase hundreds of tickets online in a matter of minutes. No one ever had a chance in hell to get tickets even if they wanted to.

that just sucks !

subversion or not, the tickets were purchased...if I purchase something, I feel I have the right to resell it for whatever I choose, I'm not forcing anyone to purchase it.....

But were they purchased, legally?

But were they purchased, legally?

From what I read in that story and others, they were.....either directly from the box office and the website.......apparently some of these ticket brokers had people camped out at the box offices when these tickets went on sale....using a computer program to purchase tickets isnt illegal last tme I checked

But inflation is.

Ticket scalping isn't illegal is it? Because it probably shouldn't be. Doesn't mean you can't think the people that are doing it are farking ********s though.

It is in some states.

its illegal in mass . every concert i spot scalpers who look like undercover cops

its state by state it just became legal here in CT....a lot of these ticket brokers are located in states where there isnt any law against it......

I always buy a couple extra tickets that I don't need for a concert, and sell them for a small markup to pay for the gas to and from the concert.

Some stadiums have a place where a ticketholder can sell their ticket at face value or less to other fans. Those are much better than buying a ticket from a guy who smells like Crown Royal

Who in their right mind would sell a ticket for less than what they paid? other than being a junkie or needing gas money?? I would never mix beer with Crown Royal...

Well, who in their right mind would buy a ticket from a bum?

Touche.....Me personally, I live in an hour from NYC and about an hour and a hallf from Boston. Scalping has always been a part of going to events....someone is always offering to buy your tickets, or asking if you want better tickets.....

I like how the promoters of the upcoming Led Zeppelin reunion concert handled it. They ran a lottery to see who would be allowed to purchase a ticket. Every person was allowed ONE ticket and they'll have to provide ID upon entry to prove that they are in fact the person who purchased the ticket. It pretty effectively shut down the scalpers.

I just read a story about how people are getting around that though...

http://music.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,2186298,00.html

And the promoters have a way of dealing with it as well: The promoter's harsh words follow the news that fans who purchased tickets to the gig, taking place November 26 at London's 02 Arena, on someone else's credit card may be refused entry. Those fans who won the right to buy tickets were issued with a password to validate their purchase, but it was announced at the weekend that they may be cancelled if the password holder's name did not match the credit card holder's name.

what if I dont have a credit card and I want to go to the show??? am I not good enough to go to Led Zeppelin???

The only way to get around it is to contact the promoters and give them a justifiable explanation as to why your name doesn't match the one on the credit card used to purchase the ticket. Hardly an easy way around it. Bet that there will be people who buy Zep tickets off of eBay that aren't allowed into the show because of the ID requirements.

I think thats BS though...what if I buy the tickets, I cant go because of some reason...I should be allowed to sell the tickets and try and recoup some of the money I spent....
