Jason Statham wanted in the upcoming GI Joe? Villain or Hero?

We’ve been on somewhat of a roll lately and here is some more information regarding the beloved GI Joe live action film that Paramount is quickly developing.

A few months ago, the IESB broke the news that Lorenzo di Bonaventura wanted Mark Wahlberg to play Duke in the upcoming live action GI Joe film. Last week, we brought you the news that Stephen Sommers has been offered to direct and take charge of the GI Joe team.

Since then, multiple industry sources have confirmed our original scoop, whether you like it or not, and so far the reaction has been a bit on the negative side. But, none the less, Sommers is the first choice to direct the film.

One of our other GI Joe informants has sent over some additional information in regards to the film. Yes, Mark Wahlberg is still the first choice to play Duke and we can add that Jason Statham is the first choice to bring the British Ac[FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif]tion [/FONT][/FONT][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif]Man[/FONT][/FONT] character to life.

While we have confirmed that Wahlberg has talked with producer di Bonaventura about the role of Duke, we don’t know how much, if any, talking has taken place with Statham.

One thing we can say for certain, the Skip Woods script was written with Wahlberg and Statham specifically in mind and they are the first choice for Duke and Action Man.

Our source has also reconfirmed that elements of both scripts are being used for the new potential final script. The Skip Wood’s origins aspects will be used alongside the Elliott/Lovett character storylines.

[FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif]The [/FONT][/FONT][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif]producers[/FONT][/FONT] are keen on keeping the Action Man character in the film to make marketing of the film easier abroad including using that name for international territories to avoid any potential negative reactions that some parts of the world may have with the name GI Joe.

The new GI Joe/Action Man team is expected to be made up of various individuals from around the world and will not be exclusively American or British. The characters will still be based from the original [FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif]cartoons[/FONT][/FONT], toys and comics but with a globe-trotting flavor.

This not going to be G.I. Joe. It's going to be a live action version of Team America: World Police starring Mark Wahlberg and Jason Statham as Duke and Action Man. They are going to have other 'international' versions of G.I. JOE as well. This is not what any G.I. JOE wants.

^ Not that I'm a GI Joe fan but anything Statham is in...is usually damn fun to watch. Can't wait for WAR, and Mark Wahlberg have been on fire lately. Shooter was one of the best films on the year IMO>

It might be an action packed thrill ride but it's not G.I. JOE.

That kindof sucks that it isn't going to focus on just the core GI Joe regulars. I would prefer they do that rather than throw in another group of characters (in this case, Action Man).

Cobra Commander should be played by Hugo Weaving , Gary Oldman or Kiefer Sutherland.

A good sgt slaughter would be Bill Goldberg.

I wonder who will play the other big leader for GI-Joe. Can't think of the characters name who where teh beret on teh cartoon.

What? Shooter was my second favorite film after 300. I just really enjoyed it. It was solid from start to finish. I haven't seen Bourne yet though.

Sounds like we might have an update of that movie Megaforce on the horizon rather than a true G.I. Joe adaptation.

From what I read there is no mention of anyone from G.I. JOE except Duke unless you count the script with Heavy Duty, Hi-Tech, and Rex(Cobra Commander.)

As for Sgt. Slaughter, I wonder how they would do that, seeing as how the real Sgt. Slaughter works for the WWE as a backstage official. Would he be willing to give up the name "Sgt. Slaughter" for a live action GI Joe movie? It would be kind of weird seeing Robert Remus on screen with a wrestling name other then Sgt. Slaughter, but I guess it could work. I am interested to see what happens to the Sgt. Slaughter character in a live action GI Joe Movie if he's in the movie.

I think Matthew Vaughn the guy who did Layer Cake would ahve been perfect and Danial Craig as Duke and Goerge Clooney as Flint and Tommy Lee Jones as Hawk.

It's not a GI Joe movie without Flint, Lady Jaye, Beach Head or Gung Ho.

A GI Joe movie without Sarge is no big deal. Unless Robert Remus is willing to let someone else use Sarge in the movie, I don't see Sarge in the movie at all (this is assuming he has the rights to the name "Sgt. Slaughter").

I'm currently have Clooney as Hawk and Clive Owen as Flint.

I am pretty sold on Clooney or Harrison Ford as Hawk. I go back and forth between actors for Flint. I am currently going with Clive Owen but I have also had Bruce Willis and others in that role.

Cowher does have the look and it would attract another audience but... it would have to be a very small part.
