The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Chanes of this beating SM2 Quality wise?

The way I think it will go:

In terms of rankings. I don't think TASM2 will be better than Spider-Man 2. I think it might be very close, but just won't be. But will be better than The Amazing Spider-Man. I think Spider-Man is better than TASM, it's just more fun and it came before, which you have to take into account.

Precisely. That is one thing SM2 did well. That train sequence was very good.

Of course, on a purely visual/action level, MOS may have outranked it too. Unfortunately it didn't quite have the story weight to back it up. (And that's saying something given my feelings towards SM2).

Emotional weight always outranks visual spectacle for me. Its why the fight in Rob Roy is still one of my favorite fight scenes despite not being anywhere close to one of the most visually stunning or "flashy" sword fights out there.

in terms of visualness you really cant compare MOS to SM2 because they were made 8 years apart and technology was much better.

I know I personally consider X2 to be better than SM2, but I think the general consensus was that SM2 was better than X2. And X1 has never been considered better then SM2 to my knowledge.

I would agree that many consider TDK, BB, and TA better then SM2. TDKR is a probably, and XFC is a maybe. That one is tougher.

I think it's always fine to compare greatness of movies but you always have to consider the time in which the film is released. You have to consider the impact verses quality.

For instance TASM made nowhere near the impact that Spider-Man did when released. Spider-Man gave a huge boost to the superhero genre. It really paved the way for a string of superhero movies to follow in the 00's which wouldn't have happened hadn't SM not been the success it was. Which is hilarious when people try saying TASM is 1000x better than SM1, when they seem to forget TASM wouldn't even have been in existance had it not been for SM1. If TASM was released when SM was back in 2002 it just would not have made the same impact.

If this film isn't better then SM2 then Sony will have truly killed the golden goose moving forward imo. That film was almost a decade ago ago and had 60's era sensibilities. Please. I'm a big fan of SM2 but I don't think it comes anywhere close to what these films can be in terms of drama, sophistication, intelligence, humor or emotional resonance. Not even close. I pitty people who think SM2 is as good as it can get for Spidey on film. When it comes to this franchise of late I'm from the show me state, so I won't get too worked up only to be burned by mediocrity again. That being said, the talent is in place for it to definitely be the best we've seen to date.

I enjoyed SM2, i watched it until i just couldn't do it anymore. With that being said I agree 100%, IMO you guys are soo right.

A truly great Spider-Man film(s) that makes use of all the great characters and dynamics that exist within his universe could easily rival anything out there. We just need a studio and director with the vision to bring these elements together in a virtuosic way. Is that Sony and Webb in May 2014?

Only movie on that list as good as Spider-Man 2 is The Dark Knight. Everything else except for Batman Begins doesn't even come close, in my opinion.

Having an "impact" on the genre does not mean that the movie is automatically of hood quality. For instance, the Burton Batman films had a big influence, but I think that they're actual quality as movies is highly questionable, I personally think that Batman Forever is a better Batman movie than either of them.

I agree with your ranking. Spidey 2 is a terrific film, and I think TASM-2 can the second best to it. TASM was quite good, but I think the 2002 film has an added spark about it.

This is generally true. Which is why the first fight between Agent Smith and Neo was a lot more fulfilling and entertaining than the burly brawl in the sequel even though the latter was far more intricately choreographed in terms of logistics and displayed far more audacious special effects.

Haha...no. That's usually a fairly rare occurence when it happens. Hopefully Webb realizes how important this film is in correlation to the public's opinion of him, because this movie can't really afford to just be pretty good.
