Chapter 24 - "Four Months Later" - Discussion Thread 9/24/07

Kensei is Linderman - mark my words, part of Linderman's abilities is to regenerate, give life. I guarantee that his powers extended his life for ages.

If is hasn't been said before Kensei = Linderman.:word:

I thought it was obvious that Kensei is going to end up being Hiro himself. You know, his dad reads him all these stories about what he did in the past but it was really the future so that when the future comes he will go back to the past and see if Kensei was real then do all the things his dad told him Kensei did.

Makes sense in my head.

I was hoping that it was his dad and that he was like really really old and he was telling Hiro stories of the stuff he has done ah well :)

Okay first off whats going on fellow discussioneers. I have spent the whole day readin this bored and the many intepretations and speculations of all the people that have contributed to this board.I am noticing a trend of topics that seem to pop and the various responses to them. I'd like to take the time now to touch upon a few of them and add my own contribution to the speculations. I am in no way trying to say that my thoughts are right or better than anybodys .....after all this board is all about the discussion and the fun of throwing out ideas.

A. The show takes place four months after the ending of last season and it is only the first episode. No show is gonna give you all the answers to all your question right off the bat. You need the build up and the character defintion and time to take it where people are at in their respective lives. If we got all the answers in one shot there would be no reason to keep coming back for more. We all now, whether it be through the boards or wherever, that there will be an episode that will give us a recap of all the things that happened in the four months prior to where the show started just like they did with six months ago (or if your a comics fan they way DC did 52 when all the comics jumped one year later after the crisis)

B.) Everyone seems to be angered about the fact that Nathan simply flew his brother into the air and then bolted. Why? I ask. Is it really that hard to believe. Throughout the enitre first season when has Nathan shown any sort of nobility whatsoever, exept for maybe the brief moments when you think he is going to take in Claire. He has always thought of himself and put things like winning the election above all else.

C.) People that hate on West....relax you just met the dude thats like saying you hate a food without trying it.....give a guy a chance....however floating by someones room staring at them is a bit on the creepy side.

D.) I noticed someone asked about Peter's scar. I have a theory on that. When peter had the scar it was part of the future in which New York blows up. since that did not happen that future has changed and you could go as far to say is non existent. In that future Claire was killed by Sylar before peter met her and had thus received her power of regeneration. Since peter did not come in contact with her he would not have gained here power and any wounds he received would have remained permanent. But since it did not work out that way and peter stopped Sylar from killing her he gained that ability and can now heal from any wound.....thus no scar. (just a theory but i think it works)

D) speaking of peter's powers...instinct does play a major part in the way they work. when he met claire and fell of the roof he did not know claire had any powers yet he still woke up and fixed his body together when claire was not near him. (he healed before she ran out the door to meet him.)

Im sure there are other things i wanted to discuss but cant remember them right now ...more to follow later. But in my eyes the premier was a good building block for the rest of the season..lots of setup and even more questions and plot twists which is my favorite thing about this show. Im glad its back and look forward to more discussions :woot:

Um....underwhelming premiere. :csad: But I could have seen that coming from all of the overhype. It's still a good show though, and I'm not going anywhere as a viewer.

But still. I never wanna see another "I don't know who I am" storyline ever again. :down

Well, the Haitian is still alive, say the company captured Peter and made the Haitian wipe his memories, very easy explaination to the "I don't know who I am" storyline. Company makes Peter work for them to find out about his past and who he is.

I actually liked the premiere episode for Season 2. The show still holds me as a captive viewer. It did what I think it set out to do...capture an audience (new and old). It opened up many new doors that will be slowly revealed this season...and that's how I like this show.

In terms of Peter...
I feel that he was destroyed when he exploded and then was 're-born' using Claire's powers. That would explain his lack of memory and his re-active use of his power.

I think that it could have been the Haitian that mind-wiped peter. The necklace that Peter was wearing, the Haitian used to wear.

What if Peter accidentally wiped his own mind with the Haitian's powers?

Boy, Ando sure took his time getting Hiro's dad a sword. :whatever: Other than that, I liked the episode. Still wondering what his power was (obviously flying isn't it).

C.) People that hate on West....relax you just met the dude thats like saying you hate a food without trying it.....give a guy a chance....however floating by someones room staring at them is a bit on the creepy side.

Hey, it worked for Superman! ;)

FOUR MONTHS LATER
Eddie Brock Jr's Review

Ok, so it's Season 2 now, and guess how much time has passed since the events of "How To Stop An Exploding Man." I've decided that, for this Season, I'm going to post these reviews of the episodes, so let's get started.

First, we'll go through character-by-character, starting with:

Mohinder - He's the first character we see once the story begins - after several minutes of review/preview. Apparently, the Heroes are facing a Legacy Virus of sorts...which could make for an interesting plot later on. Turns out that Mohinder has gone public about the Heroes, but no one believes him. That's why the Company - with the help of a man with a certain Midas touch - is hunting him down, trying to get him to join their cause. In the end, Mohinder takes the job...but he has an ulterior motive.

The Bennets/Butlers - The Bennets, now known as the Butlers, have moved to California. Lyle, Mrs. Bennet, and Mr. Muggles are all the same, basically.
- Claire - Claire now attends school at Coste Verde High School. Under the advisement of her father, she's flying under the radar. However, she almost gets hit by a new character - West - but we'll get to him later. Apparently, Claire really has shed her old ways. She not only is disinterested in the cheerleaders, but she also stands up for her less popular classmate in Phys. Ed. When no one's looking, she does a back-tuck off a tower...resulting in her leg snapping. She later calls Nathan for answers, only to be turned away.
- Noah - We get to see how Mr. Bennet handles a real job. It's a fairly comical scene watching him take s*** from his new - and younger - boss. Finally, he's had enough, and when his break is cut short, Mr. Bennet pulls this amazing, Batman-esque move on his boss. Now that his boss knows who's REALLY in charge, Mr. Bennet goes back to sipping his coffee peacefully.

Parkman - Matt starts the Season off right by being promoted to Detective. Molly doesn't approve of his "cheating," however. Speaking of which, it appears that Matt and Mohinder have some sort of joint-custody over Molly. Matt tries to talk to Molly about some problems she's having, but she gets angered at him, and he stops questioning her. Later, he reads her mind while she's asleep and hears the voice of this new, creepy Season 2 villain.

Molly - Molly seems to be adjusting well for a kid who's been through so much. But is it all superficial? Molly's teacher is worried because Molly has nightmares in class, and she draws pairs of eyes with the Godsend Symbol all over.

Ando/Kaito Nakamura - So it seems like Hiro's father and Ando have been waiting for Hiro to return all this time. Kaito opens up to Ando, telling him that he finally feels like he can be proud of Hiro. That's when he finds a picture of himself with the Godsend Symbol drawn between his eyes. Kaito explains that he has been marked for death. Kaito later suggests to Angela Petrelli that one of the 9 former Heroes is targeting them. Kaito meets his untimely demise, but not before expressing his shock at the hooded killer's identity.

Angela Petrelli - Mrs. Petrelli, unlike Nathan, has given up hope for Peter. She and Nathan get into an argument, and moments later she finds picture much like the one Kaito received. Her conversation with Kaito is the last we see of her this time, but it appears that she's next on the hooded killer's list.

Nathan - Nathan is rockin' the full beard and moustache, Grizzly Adams style. Judging by his conversation with his mother, we can assume that he's become something of an alcoholic after Peter's (alleged) death. When Claire calls, he explains to her that he doesn't have the answers. That's when, in one of the best moments in this episode, Nathan looks at himself in the mirror. But rather than the man we see, we see a Nathan who is severely burned. I suppose it's safe to assume that Nathan is seeing what he looked like just after the explosion. But it's freaky.

Hiro - Hiro saves a man who he thinks is Kensei, but really is just a man hired to pose as Kensei. The real Kensei appears, and as those of us know who read the spoilers, it's a white man. Later on, we find out that Kensei is an Englishman. Hiro is baffled by the strange, unheroic behavior of his idol. All these great tales of Kensei's victories start to unravel as Kensei fails to protect the village of Otsu, and the swordsmith's daughter is pretty P.O.ed at him. Now Hiro has to pull a Back to the Future and help change Kensei from a drunken con to a legend.

Maya/Alejandro - Say hello to two of the newest Heroes. They start out in Honduras, and they are heading for the States - in search of Mohinder. We catch a glimpse of a sign proclaiming that they are wanted for murder. When they hitch a ride and Alejandro gets into a dispute with the driver, he is kicked out of the truck. Later on, it looks like Maya has some power that kills people, and if Alejandro isn't around, she can't control herself. Alejandro catches up to the truck, and he and Maya head off towards the States...with a lot of dead bodies in tow.

West - West is a Zack wannabe. But in all seriousness, West and Zack preach the same message. West explains that there are robots (those who do what they're told) and aliens (those who go against the crowd). West is convinced that Claire is the former. Later, West pulls a perv move and watches Claire through her window. But surprise, surprise, our little future love-interest can pull a Nathan and fly. That should be fun later on, eh?

And finally, the greatest part of the episode:

Peter - Peter is one big question mark right now.
A. He somehow ended up in Ireland.
B. He has amnesia.
C. He's wearing the Haitian's necklace.
D. He's exhibiting a new power - some kind of electrical blast.
E. He's shirtless, and his hair is actually short.
So many things about Peter need answering, and it's pretty obvious that he's been busy in these last 4 months.

All in all, this was a great premiere. It answered a couple of question marks from last Season, while also throwing many more back at you. The Nathan and Peter situations are amazing, this hooded killer is intriguing, and the new Heroes are pretty cool, too. I'm glad to see that there's still a LOT of steam in the Heroes train, and I'm looking forward to taking the ride all the way until the end...which, we can all hope, won't be for a long, long time.

Technically, Claire was not killed by Sylar before he met her in 'that' future. Claire was killed by Sylar at the end of the episode when evil parkman handed her over to him. But you are correct about the scar. The future is now different. And they never said definitively that future peter's scar was a result of his explosion. It could have been anything, including his explosion, that in the 5 years between the explosion and when Heor and Ando landed in the future, could have caused that scar

PS, anyone think that Mohinder will take Molly to see the indian dream hero in order to help her with her bed wetting problem

Kring has said that they will explain Peter's scar later in the series. not necessarily this season.

WTF is the company. Didnt it already die out? They got Molly. WTF theres more companeers?

Kring has said that they will explain Peter's scar later in the series. not necessarily this season.

How would he get a scar if he has Claire's abilities as well? Unless the haitian is there to cancel them out I have no clue.

Makes sense in my head.

I called this wayyy back early on last season, and I've continued to believe this. Hiro IS the Kensei he read about as a child. I think as time goes on, Hiro's going to realize that Sark-Kensei is not going to want to be the honorable man Hiro thinks he has to be, and they'll end up fighting or something, and Hiro's going to end up taking the guise of Kensei. It is Hiro who's going to fall in love with the Swordsmith's daughter, etc.

West: :down to the repeat power. You kind of need a plot device like him to keep Claire's story even semi-interesting...but a new power would've been nice.:o

In a way I agree, but I think it's going to work with this example. They say a girl is most attracted to someone who reminds them of thier father, and this would take it to another level. :) In fact, I believe that's probably exactly WHY they gave him Nathan's power instead of thinking of a new one to use.

Also, on the topic of Peter's powers, here's my take:

I think this show has taken the approach that EVERYONE is naturally capable of having EVERY ability out there. I think they've alluded to the idea that each power is triggered in a different part of the brain. The reason why we don't see many people with powers, and why most don't seem to have any at all is because the average person only uses 10% of their brain, and that abilities such as flight or regeneration, or teleportation, ect are all "locked away" in the 90% of the brain that most people don't use.

The thought has always been thrown around in the real world (and even specifically in this show early on last season) of "Imagine what we'd be capable of if we used 100% of our brain!

It's like wiggling your ears or flaring your nostrils: everyone is capable of doing it, but some people just don't have access that "area" of their brain, so not everyone can do it. Why can I flare my nostrils and someone else can't? I don't know, I just can. But how am I supposed to explain to someone how to do it, too? You can't. It's just something a person knows how to do or doesn't.

So Nathan can fly. How? He just knows how. Can he explain how to do it to someone else? No. You can either do it or you can't.
S
o what about Sylar and Peter?

Sylar's ability seems to be that he can learn how something works simply by looking at it. So by finding another "Hero" and exposing their brain, he can look at the brain and find out how the brain works in order to do that particluar power. He then knows how to access that area of his own brain, thus he can use that power now, too!

With Peter, his ability seems to be that his brain can learn how to "unlock" a particular part of his brain simply by being nearby someone else who has that area "unlocked", too.

Little by little, Sylar and Peter are "unlocking" the use of more and more of their brains.

But then Peter gets amnesia.

The question is: if his brain has forgotten nearly everything, can it also have forgotten how to use the parts of his brain where he has learned how to use flight, invisibility, regeneration, etc? Sure he has gained these extra powers subconciously, but it was still his brain learning how to do something, right? He just wasn't aware he was learning at the time. So, really, it's entirely possible (if the "abilities" work the way I'm thinking) that his brain has forgotten how to "access" the parts of his brain that allow him to do all the things he's learned last season.

This also makes sense as far as writing goes, IMO. When the end of last season was approaching, I my thoughts were that there were two possibilities: Either Peter dies, or Peter goes bad and becomes the next big baddie to face. I thought this because, I wondered how long they could go having a good guy who can do more and more as time goes on. Before too long, there'd be nothing that could face Peter that he couldn't deal with easily and right away. So they'd either need to kill him off or make HIM the bad guy.

But I didn't think about the idea of him losing his powers....THAT could do the job, too.

Also, think about this: If he still has access to all of his powers...what's keeping Peter from blowing up all over again?? ESPECIALLY if he's forgotten the fact that he's capable of doing so, and thus won't be so careful.

In Japanese kanji, it apparently stands for "godsend". Also, it replicates a DNA pattern. Perfect for the show in many ways.

It's a recurring thing on the show, and shows up more than once in most episodes.

Actually, it's a combination of the symbols for "Godsend" and "great power."

But I call it the Godsend symbol because Godsend is the episode in which Ando revealed that.

So they haven't explained the promanence or the purpose for it?
