I wasn't sure where to insert this thread, so mods please do correct me if I'm mistaken.
But on the subject of character study films that don't world-build and instead focus on one character and his/her world. Does such a formula work better for DC over Marvel or vice versa, or are they both equal?
The upcoming Joker movie is obviously one such film as its focus is solely on Arthur and what happens to him that turns him into everyone's favourite psychopathic clown. The Dark Knight Trilogy; speaks for itself.
The closest a Marvel movie has come to this is Logan, but even that had more than a few references to X-Men lore which isn't a bad thing at all, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make a movie about one lone Marvel character that can stand on its own two feet without all the world-building.
...or has this already been done with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films? Then again, as I recall, those were supposed to eventually lead to something bigger.
