I wasn't sure where to insert this thread, so mods please do correct me if I'm mistaken.

But on the subject of character study films that don't world-build and instead focus on one character and his/her world. Does such a formula work better for DC over Marvel or vice versa, or are they both equal?

The upcoming Joker movie is obviously one such film as its focus is solely on Arthur and what happens to him that turns him into everyone's favourite psychopathic clown. The Dark Knight Trilogy; speaks for itself.

The closest a Marvel movie has come to this is Logan, but even that had more than a few references to X-Men lore which isn't a bad thing at all, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make a movie about one lone Marvel character that can stand on its own two feet without all the world-building.

...or has this already been done with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films? Then again, as I recall, those were supposed to eventually lead to something bigger.

erm….posted in a Marvel sectioned thread area, I wonder who'll 'win' this....

As much as I like Marvel solo films like Ragnarok and Winter Soldier, I don't think they're quite in the same league as The Dark Knight.

DC fans LOVE to bring up the TDK. I wonder when Marvel will start to bring up Infinity War or Endgame. And I'm not starting a flamewar, just saying that whenever discussing Marvel vs DC, TDK always comes up.

I don't really care about Marvel vs DC. All of the best comic book films of the last 10 years have been Marvel (Avengers, Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ragnarok, Infinity War) but The Dark Knight (2008) is the best comic book film of all time and maybe always will be.

Your opinion and I'm not making it personal, just saying. I've never seen a movie so overrated.....that coming from someone who LOVES TDK. Heath Ledger made that movie more than anything. Also I(my opinion)rank TWS, CA: CW and Avengers IW and EG up there and even past it.

Ledger was amazing - one of the best villains in film - but the whole cast gave great performances and the film has a lot of other things going for it.

Glad you and others enjoyed it but for me, Endgame's the overrated one.

Long story short, it's a very messy time travel film, the first two hours are light on action and I didn't like what they did to Thor.

The Question.

He always came across like Rorschach meets V for Vendetta, with a little bit of Mr Robot style paranoia and mental confusion and a sprinkle of Jake Gyllenhaal Night Crawler.
Would be an interesting character study after WB do Joker.

I also think a Lex Luthor movie could be interesting too now that I think about.

If WB/DC was to ever connect their TV and movie verse, they could actually have a thing. They should have had Arrow connected to the DCCU. Flash should have never been on tv but movies only. They should save the street level guys for tv(it's cheaper)because it's easier to flesh them out. WB has ALL of DC's characters, there really is no excuse. I say Arrow, Nightwing, kind of want to say Plastic man but not sure. DC really needs a Feige but I don't see that happening any time soon.

I agree with you. But do you think Marvel is capable of pulling something off like that with one of their own?

That’s largely because what we’ve had since has been balls, with a few exceptions. But DC have never hit the heights of the mid to late noughties since.

Between Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Punisher, I feel Marvel already have made some solid character study projects. They just need to transfer that creative team to feature films.
