Fox 2000, Scott Give Birth to Child 44
Source: Variety
April 17, 2007

Fox 2000 has optioned screenwriter Tom Rob Smith's debut novel Child 44 for Ridley Scott to direct and the filmmaker's Scott Free to produce, reports Variety.

Smith's yet-to-be published novel, due out in 2008, was sold at auction in the U.S. to Warner Books in a two-book deal that contemplates a sequel. Simon & Schuster will publish in the U.K.

Set in Stalinist Russia, the thriller revolves around an officer in the secret police who is framed by a colleague for treason. On the run with his emotionally estranged wife, he stumbles upon a series of child killings and launches his own rogue investigation, even though it means risking his own capture.

Smith, a Cambridge graduate, has written for several British television shows, including "Doctors" and "Dream Team." He also penned the story for Cambodia's first-ever soap opera for the BBC World Service Trust.

Scott's next directing project is Penetration, a political drama about modern-day intelligence and terrorism that he begins shooting in August. Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the William Monahan-scripted film.

Scott is next in theaters with crime drama American Gangster, set for release in November.

.. should be good, wonder who he'll cast

**** shows. I have faith in Ridley tho, he is a good director

This book is amazing and I am just starting the 2nd in the series now. Its a great book I highly recommend it and am glad a director of the stature of Ridley is doing it.

Whoa, talk about a thread bump.

Anyway, I heard Child 44 is also the name of the upcoming Jerry Sandusky biopic.

^Having just started the 2nd book it reminded me about the movie adaptation.

Anyway, Child 44 is an amazing book and I hope it will be Ridley's next movie after Prometheus. Never been a fan of Blade Runner so not bothered about him doing another one of those.

Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace are looking for roles in this? Yes, YES, YES, I am assuming they would be playing Leo and his wife, which would just be amazing casting on both accounts.

Not sure on the director as never seen Safe House, the book itselfs is superb though.

If Hardy is cast in this, it will only confirm my suspicion that Scott accidentally cast Logan Marshall Green in Prometheus.

^Never seen anything from the director, its the guy who did Safe House, never watched it.

The story in the book is pretty simple and I would imagine hard to mess up, but its been done before.

He's the director? Safe House was bad. Just lost interest in this.

^Didnt watch SH but didnt hear very good things. Have you guys read the book (or books, there is 3 of them now)? Its superb and one I would imagine to be very hard to mess up.

Safe House was really good IMO. Great trilogy of books, if they mess with story too much, this could turn out great.

Nothing is ever hard to mess up when it comes to adaptations.

Thats very true, some good books have been turned into awful movies.

The books are very good, not read the 3rd one yet but loved the first 2, I always thought they were very cinematic as well.

Filming should start this summer in the Czech Republic.

Joel Kinnaman in Talks to Join Tom Hardy in 'Child 44' (Exclusive)

Joel Kinnaman
is in negotiations to join Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace in Child 44, a Soviet-era thriller being produced by Ridley Scott and Michael Schaefer via the Scott Free banner.

If a deal is finalized, the move would reteam Kinnaman with Daniel Espinosa, who directed him in the Swedish breakout Snabba Cash.

Child 44 is set during the 1950s and follows a member of the Soviet military police (Hardy) who, while investigating a series of child murders, finds himself the target of his own government’s suspicions.
Kinnaman would play Hardy’s ambitious and murderous nemesis. Rapace is playing Hardy’s chameleon-like wife.
Richard Price wrote the script adapting the Tom Rob Smith novel.
Worldview Entertainment is closing in on a deal to co-finance and executive produce the film with Summit Entertainment, and a summer production start is being eyed.
Kinnaman continues to be very much in-demand as the dealmaking occurs a week after he signed on to star as Liam Neeson’s son in Warner Bros.’ crime thriller All Nighter, formerly titled Run All Night. He is also reprising his breakout role as a Seattle police detective for the third season of AMC’s thriller The Killing, which will shoot later this year.
