Child's Play remake

Saw this last night and surprisingly I really liked it. I mean it’s not great but I pretty enjoyed myself from beginning to end. I thought the kills were cool I thought it was creepy how major spoilers

chucky gets a inspiration from the Texas chainsaw massacre and literally removes a guys face to give to Andy as a present.

The look of chucky I didn’t like but throughout the movie I warned up to it. Overall I give it a 7/10

This movie was soul-less and a disgrace. Seemed like the screenwriter threw together the script on some toilet paper while taking a crap on the toilet. I couldn't wait for it to end.

Any more clarification than that?

Any more clarification than that?

You referring to my comments?

I have a longstanding affection for the original. In this one, Chucky wasn't even a character. He was a malfunctioning toy and a dreadfully boring one at that. No buildup, no suspense. They over-saturate the film with him.

It's a movie that doesn't even try to take itself seriously, which made it extremely hard to watch especially how telegraphed everything that happened in it was. "This is for Tupac!!!"???? I mean c'mon.

This movie was a lot of fun, I would characterize it as a dark comedy more than a horror film. Hilarious kills, lots of stupid gags. This film didn't take itself seriously at all, as no talking doll serial killer movie ever should. The acting and writing were good enough, it was an easy movie to watch, no complicated plot points. It pays off almost every set up and I love how the showed the evolution of Chucky from toy to killer.

Honestly, all the reasons that you list here are the exact reasons why I loved this movie. His slow burn of a build up to becoming a killer little robot, he was being trained by his owner to be a killer and Andy didn't even know it. I love that Chucky wasn't a straight out evil doll and I LOVED the dark comedy put into the film, I was laughing more than I thought I would be, which was great. To each their own but all the reason it didn't work for you are the exact reasons it worked for me. This is probably my favorite so far of the rebooted 80s horror franchises. I also don't know if I'd call this film a horror film, it's much more of a dark comedy thriller than horror since Chucky isn't through and through evil, he just does what he does because he's trying to help Andy.

But see the movie was NOT advertised that way. The trailers are played straight up horror.

In regards to the "dark comedy" element itself it wasn't even anything memorable, some of it blatantly cliche. The black kid teaching the doll to stab things "For Tupac"? That's funny?

The Tupac line wasn't funny to me but I was laughing consistently. Andy teaching Chucky scary faces was hysterical to me, especially knowing what was to come.

I'm happy they didn't try the same tone as the original and embraced the sillier elements. That's what this series has done from the second movie onward.

Thanks for spoiling the "For Tupac" line, dude, way to go! By the way, I find it funny, even out of context.
And honestly, even just the teaser trailer was ripe with satire and potential dark comedy.
The original had plenty of very subtle humor, as well, by the way.

This film is nothing like the original.

Good. No need for a rehash. I'm looking forward to it.
The "Fright Night" and "Evil Dead" remakes also brought something new to the table, while still maintaining their essence.
And I like that they're doing something new and different with this one. I'll let y'all know what I thought of it. So far, I'm really looking forward to seeing it based on what I've seen of it.

I thought this was really entertaining even though it took me a while to adjust to this new incarnation of Child's Play. I didn't quite know how to feel about it at first because it's so different from the original, but I have to give them credit for finally doing something new and innovative with this franchise even if I didn't love all the changes. Hamill is a lot of fun in this as Chucky and while I liked his voice he never came close to topping Dourif IMO. I was honestly a bit surprised that they didn't let him get more creative with the voice work, because to me he felt so reigned in and one note here. All that being said the performances from the kid playing the new Andy as well as Aubery Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry are all really solid. I also enjoyed how creative and gory some of the kills were, especially towards the end.

7/10

honestly really enjoyed this, i liked the way it used modern smart technology
there was things i picked up on after watching it like things being set up

I liked the new take on chucky, i love the original series but i thought this was a creative retelling

Caught it on the opening Thursday showing, and I enjoyed it quite a bit dispite some of the inconsistent tone and the questionable Animatronic/CGI Chucky. It took a bit to get used to, and I wonder how much was deliberate, Chucky 2.0 is supposed to be a malfunctioning, glitchy home robot companion/Alexa/Google after all. Acting was good mostly all around, exception to the "friend" characters. Surprisingly hilarious, and like a lot of ppl said a really emotional story for Chucky/Andy. You feel for Chucky here. Mark Hamill does great with what he's given.. albeit I did miss the yelling/swearing Chucky. Good on em, for making that choice. Its a great kinda "Modern Reimagining" of what the franchise could (and honestly probably would) be if it was concieved today. I liked it waay more than I expected to, and thankfully it didnt get as bad as I feared. Bring on CP2 or whatever it ends up being called, just make Chucky look less like he belongs in Thunderbirds next time.

eh it was okay. average flick at best, forgettable time at worst. far from terrible.

appreciated the different take but that's all this film will ever be... a 'take'. a fun little deviation from the iconic chucky, not a timeless re-invention.

What a pleasant surprise this reimaging of the classic horror film was.

A HUGE improvement over the last 4 films which i thought sucked and turned the character and franchise into a joke and a parody! the last good Child's Play film was 3 until now and this movie is on par with the Child's Play trilogy and back to the roots of the first 3 films on how scary Chucky was instead of a complete joke like Bride to Cult which Cult was really awful and killed the franchise.

I really enjoyed this new take on the franchise! the kid was quite likable and the mother too, i liked how Chucky was a practical effect and i like the idea of a killer AI than a possessed doll which was done to death already even after the third film. It really gave me a vibe of that Simpsons episode with the killer toy robots and Small Soldiers, it was something fresh and new. Nice make up and gore effects and has a vibe of Stranger Things to it. Mark Hamil is quite good as the new voice of Chucky and all. Sure he's no Brad Douriff but still competent.

I like that it did different things unlike the Elm Street remake which was just a lame near copy of the original movie and added nothing new but also steal lines from the other films. That's not the case here as it did it's own thing like The Blob remake did.

I like that this made Chucky actually scary again. I hope for a sequel as that could be good and this is an example of how to do a remake right. It’s so nice to see a remake do something new and fresh instead of just copying the original like Poltergeist, Elm Street and some or some halfassed lousy shot-to-shot same dialogue remake like Psycho and Omen. Nice to see Chucky be serious like the first 3 films, sure there's levity here and so did the first 3 and it's not a straight up parody like the last 4.

What a brilliant reinvention on "Child's Play"!
Keep an eye on Lars Klevberg. The guy has a tight grip on his second feature film: A sleek, stylish look, with a great pulse for tone and characters.
I really enjoyed it, and that they didn't hold back on certain elements. Nice to see how they not only used technology as a basis, but also toxic relationships, which was really the heart of the story.
I love when sci-fi, fantasy and horror serve as a (fantastical) mirror to our reality, and this was definitely poignant.... and plenty of fun... and with a great cast! Chucky himself was great, as well, and they did a great job slowly building up a psychological journey for him, to the point where you genuinely feel sorry for the lil' fella at certain points.
Andy's friends got somewhat overbearing during the climax, but other than that I don't have many complaints.
Mission accomplished. Films like "Fright Night," "Evil Dead" and now "Child's Play" are proof that even nowadays horror remakes and reinventions CAN work!

So just finished watching this, and I really liked it. It makes few decisions I wouldn't have, but overall it was a lot of fun to watch. It struck the right tone, and I found myself interested i nthe characters. I never liked the idea for Chucky in this movie, but it turned out really well imo. Also Mark Hamill killed it, as always.

This was a good movie. 8/10. There were flaws mainly there were no likeable characters except the detective. Like seriously though the characters were all unlikable. So, why an 8/10? Hamill and his Chucky were great and they didn't skip on the gore. The horror was great. After the first act, I was asking why was this remade, but the last 2/3 were good. Would definitely be interested in a sequel.

What I liked about this movie was as a remake, it takes the basic premise and still does its own thing with it. The best remakes in my opinion are the ones that change enough of the story elements to really stand on their own. I hate shot for shot remakes, what really is the point lol.

Sure the film has some issues, mainly for me it’s the editing. The 3rd act and final battle with Chucky came and went and could’ve been a little longer and slowed down a bit for added suspense. And some of the side characters are given some depth only when it’s their turn to die, when that stuff should’ve been set up earlier. There are also some missed opportunities that I don’t have time to delve into now, but an extra 10 minutes of character work and interactions would have fleshed out more in this film than what we ultimately got.

I thought the actors were all great, the kid is a talent, and plaza was so good in this. Andy’s friends were okay-ish, could have been written a bit better and less one dimension and cliched. And of course Mark is fantastic lol. I’m just glad this film took the chance to be different from the original. That’s what makes it unique from the first. I also love how Chucky looks because it’s pretty apparent his oddball features are directly tied to how off-putting and weird they want the audience to feel for this doll. And they use it with purpose by bringing attention to it lol.

3.5/5

Just saw this. I didn't really like it. It's not terrible, but I'm surprised at the positive reviews reading through this thread.
Disclaimer: I've never seen the original, but I do know a lot about it because growing up my cousin was a big fan. So this not being like the original didn't bother me

I thought the whole Chucky/Buddi being an evil robot was kinda dumb. When I saw the trailer I thought that it could be an interesting, but I don't feel like they did anything interesting with it.

The movie just felt very in the middle. Like the filmmakers didn't know what they wanted to do and it just became half baked. Do we want this to be a technophobe movie? Kinda. Do we want it to be very funny, yet still scary like IT or Us? Sort of. Is this a full horror-comedy? Maybe. Is it like IT: Chapter One with a group of kids take on this horror threat? At times. It just seemed like it wanted to do all those things and ended up not doing any of them that well.

It wasn't unfunny, I did have a few chuckles. But I literally just watched the movie and I can barely remember any good lines or even lines in general. I remember: "For Tupac!" but that's because that was f***ing dumb.

None of the characters stood out and, I know it's a horror movie, the characters were really really dumb.

The kills were ok and I thought the performances were good. Again, it's not terrible. But I do regret paying the $5.99 to rent this
