Christopher Nolan Meeting With Directorial Candidates

just because Nolan is the producer...producer that doesnt mean that it will be a dark movie.

Goyer and Jonathan wrotte the story.

^ Then why have Nolan "grandfather" the new film if he's not going to provide any personal input? I agree that Superman shouldn't be dark, but WB looks at the success of Batman and wants to replicate it. That's why Nolan has been given the keys to the "big two."

after Superman Returns 2006 i think there is no way that WB would do a ''dark'' movie.

this has to be a fun action packed movie with good actors .

I think you're confusing dark with just plain boring for Superman Returns. Duncan Jones, Aronofsky and Reeves as auteur's make darker films. Just the pool of names being thrown around suggests that WB wants a "realistic" Supes. Brian Singer made another Donner film, and that proved to be a failure.

Yes, I wouldn't say SR was a dark movie either. It was just... contemplative. Except for the bit where Superman is beat up, there's not really any darkness in it.

I think Superman Returns wasn't dark but it was dreary in the third act.

Aronofsky is a great director but given his style, it would be risking repeating Superman Returns with the bleakness and slow pacing. I want a director that's gonna be able to handle to crackling energy of a super-hero action movie like Superman. The ideas needs to be big but it also needs to be fun.

Kinda upset Affleck is out of the running, I think he would have been a good choice for director. Aronofsky is great but seems an odd fit.

Duncan Jones trashed hollywood for preferring younger actors over older, experienced actors, which is BS to me because it feels as though Hollywood loves 30 or older actors.

Damn if Jones said that, I've found a respect for the man. I love him already. We should see in big movies more of guys like Hamm, Aaron Eckhart, Clive Owen and less of Leo and Sam Worthington.

Aronovsky would be a bad choice(although he could prove me wrong) but that doesn't mean that Affleck would make a stellar one either.

He is grandfathering it because his name means something and he is using that power to help a creative partner get a project off the ground.

Mainly because he's the one who brought Goyer's Superman idea to WB. Also, he has producing experience on his own films and experience resurrecting a superhero film franchise.

One last thing to note is that Nolan has stated that he understands the differences between Superman and Batman. Even if he is involved a lot in the actual making of the movie, which I don't think he will be to the level that a lot of people are thinking, don't expect it to be a carbon copy of his Batman films.

Where did I say Ben would be stellar? ;) I think he'd be a good fit and sort of hope he can get back in the mix. Though, i'm pretty sure when the director gets announced, the vast majority of us will be all "WTF where did he come from?"

I do want to see Ben take on a superhero movie though, if not Superman then maybe something like Green Arrow

Hah with Ben Affleck being talked about has me wondering about his portrayal of George Reeves in Hollywoodland. Now I must finish watching that movie when I get the chance!

I'd be interested in seeing what Aronofsky could do. I liked The Fountain, and I thought The Wrestler was great. It would be a definite change of tone compared to the movies he usually makes.

So far, Aronofsky seems to me like the most interesting name on the list. I´m a big fan of Pi and Requiem For a Dream. I know he´s a comic book fan, he co-wrote a (controversial, but apparently interesting) Batman: Year One adaptation with Frank Miller once.

Matt Reeves has dropped out... the reason being he said he had a very very clear McG style fear that if he took the job both Nolan (first name Chris) and him (last name Reeve) would both have bad accidents... I'm serious, he's pulled himself out of the running after how superstitious he's become since making Let Me In.

If you've seen The Fountain(sadly, if you are, you're in a select group) you have an idea of what Aronofsky can do regarding this concept. He'll know how to showcase Superman's power and strength, yet at the same time show that sense of isolation he does feel due to what he is.

So the list was/is:
Snyder
REeves
Jones
Scott
Liebesman
Aronofsky

Ben Affleck dropped out. Am I missing anyone?Liebesman is that he has a huge sci fi epic coming up, but I havent seen any more than that 8 second clip and I hear the script is terrible

Save for Scott all those guys are kind of known for making "darker" movies. None of them scream Superman director to me. But we'll see.

1. I've seen The Fountain and I loved it, faults and all. I think it's a very brave little film. If you can call it little since it starred Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.
2. The one thing I can definitely do without, is the "isolation" theme. After Superman Returns and 9 seasons of Smallville, I've had quite enough of the lonely god archetype.

What's wrong with a Superman that actually LIKES being Superman? A hero that takes PRIDE in the fact that he has these powers and he can use them to help people. I've had to sit around 9 years waiting for Clark's mopey ass on Smallville to realise that being a hero is not a burden, it's a privilege. The only thing I want to see Superman being sad about is that
a. He can't do MORE to help people
or
b. people rely to much on him.

@ LadyVader, Well said.
Superman shouldn't be like spidey with a ''woe is me'' attitude and ''I have all these powers and can't have a normal life'' type of complaining.

With Superman it would be even worse since he has had his powers since he was a small child, so he should be used to them and where his place in the world is by the time he's an adult
What's wrong with seeing superman enjoying his powers, especially flying.
I'm like you in that the only time i'd want to see Superman despair over his powers is maybe when he can't save someone in time.

Mickey Rourke was a broken character in the wrestler but he enjoyed being a hero on the ring ;) .

Though on the flipside if he does love doing what he does suddenly it's viewed as too goofy and campy. Even if that ain't the case.

Ben Affleck would have been an awesome choice. Duncan Jones and Darren Aronofsky I think are the best choices.

Preach LadyVader!

That's why I said it would be a change of tone for Aronofsky. I'm hoping that approach you wrote above is what we'll see in the next movie. Nothing wrong with him having the weight on his shoulders, but Superman should always be willing to bear it, no matter what.
