Christopher Nolan Meeting With Directorial Candidates

I was actually sort of interested in seeing what Affleck might do with it. Oh well, I still hope he creates his "Blade runner-esque" universe eventually. As for Zemeckis, that'd be pretty damn cool. That's if he doesnt't do the time travel movie. Frost at COLLIDER.com says he knows who it it'll most likely be but is sworn to silence.

I've heard who is probably helming SUPERMAN and it isn't Ben Affleck. Wish I could say more, but I made a promise.

Maybe, he could at leat say, if the possible choice is good for him or not? and/or if that director is on "the list"?

Actually I'd like to see Supes in a Blade Runner'esque Metropolis, although not nearly as dark, but I do like the aspect of a Superman-story set in the near future.
I also wouldnt' mind the suit to have a futuristic feel to it without going cheesy sci-fi overboard.

Affleck is a good director and I even think he's a good actor. However, as Ive said none of the choices said have really made me think that they're perfect for directing Superman. Most of them seemed better suited to direct darker heroes. But we'll see how it plays out

The most important aspect for any potential Superman director is his grasp on the material.

Richard Donner's the perfect example. Prior to being hired to direct Superman, he was mostly known for The Omen (the success of that film landed him the gig) but what made him the perfect choice, was his connection to Superman. He saw the job of directing Superman as protecting a piece of Americana, and took the job very seriously.

Hopefully, the next director is someone who feels they can bring something special and contribute to Superman's legend, as opposed to viewing the gig as a way of advancing their career.

Also, it has to be someone that can handle a production as big as Superman. The scale of a Superman film, is potentially bigger than any other superhero film.

Yeah would be nice. Instead of dangling a carrot that can't be grasped.

Well, only seeing it as "protecting a piece of americana" is a bit narrow and sounds too much like patriotism. Yes, Superman IS an american, and an important piece of american pop-culture, but he's alot more than that or at least he's become that over the years. It's more the universal elements of the more modernized Superman that the director has to get and really try hard to push through, especially if the Superman-reboot has to grap audiences like TDK did. There has to be a message beyond the entertainment no matter how naive or "trivial" they are. I still believe that if done right, a Superman-movie for today can be just as relevant as any social realistic oscar-favorit.

Yup. Now, imo he wanted just people to know that Affleck is really out despite what Nikki Finke is saying (just can't understand what is going on then.. first, her list seem to be not that reliable, then this? ).

I have tweeted him, we'll see.

anyways, we should know who the director is soon.

My point was is that a director's grasp and his connection to the material, is more relevant than his previous filmography.

I used Donner as an example because he fit that description and crafted not only the definitive Superman film but the blueprint for the genre (which inspired other directors such as Chris Nolan himself, as to how to approach a superhero film and do it right).

I got that :yay:

I just dont wanna see Supes as an all-american hero with a stars and stripes-flag under his cape. Just wanted to express my concern with that.

It didnt go over well when singer used the ''truth, justice, all that stuff'' line. Frankly, it offended me a little because he omitted the american way part of it.
Now, i'm not saying that I think we should see supes in a parade, waving a flag around while singing God bless America, but you gotta admit, the kents WERE patriotic after all and they did raise Clark, so it stands to reason some of that would have rubbed off on supes as well.

As for it offending the rest of the world, I don't think so. It certainly hasn't hurt Bay or Raimi's films. I'd argue Spidey was even more in your face with the stars and stripes than S:TM was.

I see it like this, If Superman had came from France, then i'd expect him to reflect that countries beliefs and values. If from England, then their beliefs and values. But he's not, he was raised in a remote part of middle America, pretty much the heart of it, and I expect to see his beliefs reflect that.

If it kills them to have him be a little patriotic then i'd rather they just have nothing said at all concerning it, than to have another stupid line like ''truth justice and all that stuff''. That was so blantently PC it was sad.

Anywho Zemeckis FTW.

Anyone buy ANYTHING at the moment?

GAWD, I hope to hell these proposed coming announcements satisfy me.

Hard to say. Personally I think most on that ''list'' had no idea they were even on it.
What's the old saying, never let your right hand know what your left hand is doing? That could very well be whats going on here, a supposed list of directors is released, and meanwhile, Nolan meets with the real candidates that he wants. shoot, I dunno.

I can't imagine Nolan gives a crap about Afleck.

I know I don't.

And I know I'm not alone.

Speak for yourself.

Regardless what you think of him as an actor, he IS gaining recognition as a director. Why wouldn't Nolan (at least) respect his skills and consider him? Regardless if he's suited for Supes or not, he has talent so don't make it as if he's just some schmuck who dated J'Lo back in the early 2000s. He's worked hard to get out of that.

You can tell he doesn't give a crap since he didn't bother to spell Affleck's name right.

Also, Ben Affleck has more awesome in his hair than you know exists.

I expect plenty of this non sense to occur once it is announced who is directing.

There will be plenty of these alleged insiders, who are going to say...."we knew for months now who was going to direct but we we were told to keep it quite until it was announced".

Watch....

Right now almost every director out there is being pursued with even Sam Raimi and the Duplass brothers being recently thrown into the mix... meaning a LOT of this is just rumor nonsense... probably will have to give it another month, probably by beginning of November to see who will be director.

If Zemeckis directed Superman I'd be sorely disappointed.

I can only speak for myself for all the times i saw SPiderman in the movies but when the american flag came on the screen here in holland , there was quite some facepalms and groans heard in the theaters.

For me , the greater connection of Supes is earth. Not just the US. That's why i think the "truth , justice "line is outdated. Moral and human valueus are the greatest gifts the Kents gave to Supes. Not patriotic love.

Your missing my point. I would expect him to reflect the values of WHICHEVER country he was raised in, be it China, Russia, or Nigeria. He would be a product of his enviroment. It just so happens he was raised in America. To have him NOT be that way would mean a revamping of his upbringing IMO. If they wanna have the kents be some hippie couple from the 60's that puts love and worldpeace first, then by all means let em' go for it.
As for the facepalms during Spidey, it sure didn't hurt it's BO any.
Like I said before, I dont mind if they don't have him be patriotic, I just don't want them to change classic lines or images just to be PC. That's what ticks me off.

anywho, wrong thread for this..i'm wondering how affleck would do.

You know, you're exactly right!

Aphlack won't be the director. Sorry, Afflads.

Benne Aflik should continue to perfect his career in dramatic crime films and leave Superman to someone else.

Perhaps Bin Afleque should get his very own thread, so that those who are oddly excited about him may rejoice.

Calm down.

Just as you are allowed to say you don't like Ben Affleck...others are allowed to say that they do.

I'd take Affleck over a directed who hasn't directed a decent movie in years.

Matt Reeves is the name most exciting to me at the moment. Please not Snyder.

Snyder already declined the job why people keep bringing his name up is beyond me lol
