Chronicle - faux-supers documentary

I don't like that he went into details about the plot.

I'd rather go in fresh.

I don't think he said anything that I didn't gather from the trailer and TV spots.

Really looking forward to this now, it will finally be something different in the superhero genre which can be a bit stale at times.

Yahoo Movies - 5/5

A film that simultaneously manages to re-invent two genres, 'Chronicle' is one of the sharpest, most inventive movies we've seen in a while. It's a brisk foray into superhero territory, but one that leaves a lasting impression.
"With invention, humour and a brilliant execution of ideas, Josh Trank has kick-started our interest in themes we had little time for before."

This is getting insane buzz. And to think a few months back some were dismissing it as another "found footage" film.

i dont take anything some fans online say i remember people her bashed first class and rise of the apes because of fox

then bashed real steel with oh boxing robots meh

yet all 3 of those films delivered

I guess Monday is when all the reviews from the big papers will come. Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, etc. I'm shocked at all the great reviews so far but I love it. This is an opening weekend movie for me now.

Can't wait to see this next weekend. It looks very good from the previews.

Did this part in the trailer make anyone else laugh?

One of the teens using his powers to make the teddy bear in the toy store float near the little girl, making her scream and run away in terror.

That gave me a good chuckle and still does when I watch the scene in the previews.

"What you lookin' at girl?! Stay in school!" :funny:

I may (did) have attacked this movie prematurely. The director said he was a fan of Akira and the more I've been watching and hearing from this it looks like he understands what made Akira so successful to begin with yet gave this its own fresh twist.

It sucks this guy couldn't of been sought out by WB for the Akria project instead of who they hired seeing as he seems to be a legitimate fan of the manga/film and having someone that enthusiastic about the material adapting it could have given us a great movie. Not to mention he has a great eye for great visuals and apparently strong characters (based on the reviews). Even with the American setting reworking of the Akira project over at WB, I think this fella might have made it work.

Shouldn't of judged the movie on the somewhat crappy trailer because the t.v spots and the reviews seem to be saying the complete opposite.

Hope WB is watching closely and dumps Jaume Collet Serra for this guy.

I'll just pretend this is the movie adaptation of Akira until we get a better one.

As much as i would want toi see a proper AKIRA movie being made , having Trank make Akira with Chronicle ( hopefully) being a success would IMO not a very wise move. From the look of the trailers , he would basically do a similar movie.
And i guess it's a combination of his inexperience playing arole in him not being selected. CHronicle is his first movie and Fox has played it safe with a 15 million budget. Film experience is vital when making movies.

Akira is falling apart over at WB. If Chronicle is good (looking very likely) and performs well (also looking quite likely)I think it wouldn't be out of the question if Josh Trank finds himself in somewhat of a bidding war with Fox trying to keep him for the F4 reboot and WB trying to pitch his dream project to him as they also need someone badly to salvage the mess they have going on with Akira (it isn't only the script, word has it they've been incredibly let down with the direction Jaume Collet Serra has been taking the project in).

I'd be a whole lot less worried if WB were to somehow soften the deal and having Josh Trank be the new director for Akira. This guy clearly has a vision and that's exactly what that project is missing and desperately needs.

the kid who plays adam was on the short list to play tetsuo

derivative dont ya think

end akira lol

The futuristic setting alone plus geopolitical, science, government corruption, morality of war etc. which he is probably more than aware from reading/watching the manga/anime should more than make Akira a different movie from Chronicle.

The telekinesis and teenagers is the only similarity that these two movies would have.

It'd be a very wise move if anything if WB approaches him. Enthusiasm, talent, & vision is exactly what the Akira project needs and this guy apparently has it in spades.

The characters are the ones that have been getting the most praise from those who have seen it. To me that means a lot as the effects seem impressive on their own right but people are remembering the characters the most. That's such a positive sign.

Unruly teenagers gain telekenisis and as their powers grow one of them grows insane with power and has to be taken down by the other(s).

I'd say that is incredibility like Akira.

love how AICN described Adam

"he is like peter parker if he had no aunt may and uncle ben"

LOL

Even if his heart is in the right place , it's up the WB and the other studios financing AKIRA to make a proper movie and not be busy just reducing the goddamn budget.
Imagine if this actually happened

Studio exec : Josh TRank. We love Chronicle man. Heard AKIRA was an inspiration. Wanna make an actual AKIRA movie ?

Trank : Wow really ??!!

Studio exec : Yep. THe only thing is that the 6 books are condensed into 2 movies ,the setting is american , the budget is 90 million for both movies.
And that number is currently shrinking as we speak.

Trank :  * leaves room*

Only one of the unruly teenagers (Tetsuo) gains telekinesis while the others who have the powers are little children names Espers who have aged to the point of looking like wrinkly corpse midgets caused by experiments by the Japanese government. Sorry but that sounds nothing like Chronicle aside from the obvious telekinesis part.

That's like saying most super powered origin characters are the "same". Oh well Captain America,Hulk & Spider-Man are the same because they're both genetically altered human beings with super human strength.

One theme shouldn't make both properties the exact same thing.

The nature of corruption was one of the main aspects explored in the Akira manga for those who have read it will know. Not to mention drug culture, social decay, revolting public against worsening government. The list goes on.

Those are themes that won't be explored in Chronicle. Like I said there is more than enough material that would make Josh Tranks Akira pretty different from his first project.

He's the best option right now. Jaume Collet Serra is such a bad choice for Akira that it's not even a matter of debate really. Josh Trank with this movie alone is more qualified than Serra.

The shrinking budget has been occurring because both the directors they've approached have shown tendencies of misappropriation when handing in their concept of how they would approach Akira.

Akira does need a relatively high budget for each film but misappropriation and a lack of creative vision without a decisive and concise plan makes a studio nervous and that's when they start cutting back and eventually the entire thing goes back into the back burner (like it has now thanks to Hughes and Serra).

WB is one of the more lenient studios and despite my gripes of them changing around the setting to America, I believe Josh Trank can pay well enough homage by keeping most of the themes without sacrificing good character development. That's the most important part.

Trank knows how to handle a budget and still hand something in great. If WB approaches him and give him some time to whip up his concept and ideas for how he'd tackle this rough idea they have for an American set Akira and they see a clear vision they'll bump the budget back up and then some. A presentation that sells them that this can be both a critical and financial hit garners faith among the suits. What they've had with Serra is a bunch of problems because of a lack of understanding and a clear plan.

A lack of faith in the initial directors they hired is what has made them even more cautious with the budget. This can easily change if a passionate enough director presents an amazing concept within the confines they've set as requirement (American setting & 2 films which by the way is enough to condense the main points of the six volumes). This is the main problem the directors have been having with and Trank I believe can overcome this based on what I've been reading up about the guy.

The movie isn't about how they got their powers, it's about what happens when they get them and how it changes them physically and emotionally. I could careless how they get their powers, it's not relevant to the story the director is trying to tell.

I don't think we need a detailed explanation either.

I don't agree with you sometimes, but I agree with every word of this post!

Akira needs someone who has a proper understanding of Akira and the themes it contains, knows how to develop characters and knows how to properly utilize special/visual effects, and Trank most definitely fits all of these criteria.

Infact...i'd go a step further and not even show them getting their powers. They go down into the hole, see something...we get a glimpse of a ship or meteor or something and then that's it....
