'The Batman' Adds 'Rogue One' Cinematographer Greig Fraser (Exclusive)

Cinematographer Greig Fraser, who earned an Oscar nomination for Garth Davis' 2016 biographical drama Lion, is on board to shoot The Batman.

The Australian DP previously shot The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves' 2010 film Let Me In. The Batman will star Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight.

In addition to Lion, Fraser's credits include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Zero Dark Thirty, Vice, Foxcatcher and Denis Villeneuve's upcoming Dune.

If he's good enough for Dune, he's good enough for this!

The twitter scooperrrrs weren't even close.

Love it Zero Dark Thirty, don't know the others

Guy has a very good eye. More than fine with this

Loved his work in Zero Dark Thirty, Foxcatcher, and Rogue One. And he's coming off of Dune.

Cool beans.

rogue one is a extremelly well shot movie, thats a great news

Yeah, it’s probably a done deal. Was it ever confirmed that they wanted this to be more outright and classically noir-ish than previous franchise entries? I’ve half joked about a black and white Batman movie before...

You know what? I would love to see a Black & White viewing option on the blu ray when it gets released.

Fantastic choice for cinematographer. Rogue One was a gorgeous looking film as well as Let Me In, so I couldn't be happier!

For the record, it was one scooper from DiscussingFilm who reported really outdated info (Richardson confirmed that he was going to be D.P. when Affleck was directing The Batman). So it's "close," but in a weird, obtuse way.

Either way, Fraser makes a lot of sense considering his history with Reeves and he's been putting in some really amazing work this past decade. Rogue One is one of/the best looking Star Wars films.

I remember Fraser since How to Destroy Angels "A Space in Between" music video. He's a great choice. Loves to use focus, but doesn't seem to like deep blacks. I don't think it will hurt the look of Batman, though.

True, but Fraser has a very dark, shadowy look even without utilizing deep blacks very often. Fascinatingly enough, he's got a very tactile, gritty look in just about every film I've seen him shoot, even his work for Star Wars. He's a quality pick for Batman.

Casting aside, the costume designer is the next big piece of news I'm waiting on.

Its interesting ,I didnt even think of greg beforehand but hes such an obviously amazing choice

He was always one of the candidates I had on radar, since he's worked with Reeves before on Let Me In. Part of me was hoping for someone new since there are a plethora of talented cinematographers in the film industry young and old, but it's been almost a decade since he last worked with Reeves and Fraser has developed one of the more illustrious filmographies out there among the younger generation of cinematographers.

I'm wondering if they'll be shooting digital or on film stock though; IIRC Pattinson has said in the past that he prefers to work with directors that shoot on film stock, but digital cinema cameras have really improved over the past several years.

Personally I'm kind of hoping they shoot in large format via a digital camera like an Alexa65 or one of the newer Panavision cameras that Ari Aster and his D.P. used to shoot Midsommar.

See this is where the rumor mill just sets you up for disappointment. If we got this news before the Richardson thing gained traction, I'd be all hype. But now, as pleased as I am, there's just a hint of regret to it.

Ah well.
