Ship of Heroes explores its spaceship mission maps

May 11, 2017 6 comments

[YT]v3Yda-CNtZo[/YT]
Raise your hand if you’re a superhero MMORPG fan who really, really wants to see good mission maps. None of this office building #3457225 stuff. That’s all of you, right? Good. City of Heroes-inspired indie superhero MMORPG Ship of Heroes has a new video out today demoing one such mission map. In a normal city on Earth, the area would be the sewer — the area directly under the city. But since Ship of Heroes is set on a domed city on a gargantuan spaceship, the area below Apotheosis City is just… spaceship corridors.

“The Justice has twenty ship levels, each of which can have above ground and below ground playable areas. This video illustrates the Sci-Fi themed environment that is below the surface of the first level, called Apotheosis City. Multiple rooms and corridors are shown, including the first layer of a deep section directly underneath the Arch in the center of the city. In addition three classes of crew are shown: security guards in the Arch room, plus scientists and crewmen, in their work clothes. A major control hub is also shown, as is a security room with a mysterious item kept under lock and key. While all of the art, layout, lighting, arrangement of assets, and special effects shown in the video are preliminary, they do provide insight into the current state of development and the intended art style of the Ship of Heroes. AI for the civilian NPCs in the video has been coded by the devs from Ship of Heroes. This setting is the most current example of an instanced mission map for the game.”

Valiance Online promises fans that it is ‘moving forward’

May 17, 2017 4 comments

Fans that might look at Valiance Online’s development chart and wonder when, oh when alpha will ever arrive are being treated to a pep talk from the team today. A reality check was posted on the official forums for those finding that patience with this project is in short supply.

“Game development is not a science, especially for a small indie team,” the Valiance Online devs wrote. “The unexpected happens, like Unity suddenly deciding to make major changes to the engine with no warning, or members of the team being unavailable due to their ‘day job’ or family/medical issues and when you have a small team, just one member being ‘AFK’ affects progress a lot. This is why we have decided to not post dates for when things will be done because ‘stuff’ happens and we don’t have the resources like a larger studio might have to deal with it as quickly. That’s just how it is.”

The good news? Progress is being made, and the team is just as excited about getting to alpha status as its fans. “Regardless of whatever challenges or setbacks we face, we keep moving forward,” promised the team.Read more

Ship of Heroes upgrades its graphic engine

May 23, 2017 3 comments

Even superheroes like to look their best.
The Ship of Heroes team announced that it just finished updating the game’s graphic engine to Unreal Engine 4.14.3, which will give the devs some shiny new toys to integrate into the upcoming sci-fi MMO. The update was not to the Unreal Engine’s latest build, as the devs prefer to stay a step behind so as to work with a trusted and stable version.
“What does this mean for the Ship of Heroes team?” the devs asked.

“Well, we’d like to highlight one particularly helpful new feature: in 4.14, Epic has added a tool which enables developers to generate lower level of detail (LOD) variations for static meshes with a few clicks. It sounds simple, but this is a big time-saver for artists who no longer have to spend time creating those lower-detail LODs manually. ”

As a bonus, these LOD variation buildings have a fraction of the polygon count of the original structures, offering faster load time and smoother playfield rendering.

Valiance Online asks its fans what’s the most important part of a superheroic MMO

May 24, 2017 18 comments

What makes for a great superheroic MMO? What are the most important aspects of the game to consider? The developers behind Valiance Online obviously have several answers of their own, but a question on the game’s official forums turns that question back over to the community. What do you think is the most important part of making this game great?

The responses are already varied and in-depth; the argument is being made, for example, that a big part of it is understanding the fantasy of being a superhero and the importance of letting individual heroes tackle strong villains alone.

There’s also a lot of discussion of how challenging content should be and the amount of content in the game, along with discussion of which MMOs succeed at providing all of the right elements (a list that doesn’t start and stop with City of Heroes, incidentally) and which ones do not. If you’re curious about what has been said or just want to add your own thoughts, the thread is right here.

City of Titans drops some Scorpion lore

May 26, 2017 6 comments

Only part of becoming a successful superhero is mastering your abilities and pulling off a spandex outfit in public. Another key part is knowing your enemy inside and out, and using their weaknesses against them.
To wit, the team behind City of Titans posted a lore piece that shines a light on one of the villain groups, Scorpion. As the name implies, this gang is all cuddles and free love.

“Scorpion seeks world conquest at all costs,” the team wrote. “Its agents often pursue smaller, simpler-seeming goals, but ultimately,

Scorpion seeks only power and destruction of all rivals. While Scorpion occasionally makes a show of espousing some particular philosophy or ‘bringing order to the world,’ its true goal seems to be to ensure its eventual dominion over the entire world and the elimination of all moral codes aside from ‘obey Scorpion,’ which essentially translates into personal power for its members.”Read more

City of Titans blasts enemies with funky dance moves

June 3, 2017 22 comments

[YT]AMa96DNnRA8[/YT]
Anyone remember that old console game Moonwalker? You played as the late Michael Jackson who would use his suave moves to defeat enemies. But perhaps the most remembered element was when Jackson could start a dance-off with every bad guy on the screen, making them get down and funky too. It was a real thing and a reason why many of us are not quite right in the head today.

Well, if you miss the lethal combination of dance and combat, then go no further than City of Titans. The team has been experimenting in making hip hop a status effect for hero powers, and boy does it kind of work.

“For the past few weeks, we have been experimenting with soft and hard controls. And then Word Up came on the radio…. then it was obvious what needed to happen,” the devs said.
Don’t believe us? We have actual proof of this craziness after the jump!

Ship of Heroes reveals the cyborg Prometheans

June 15, 2017 8 comments
Since Ship of Heroes is not shy about promoting itself as “superheroes meets Star Trek,” it stands to reason that the Borg would somehow get tossed into the mix, too.

In Ship of Heroes, the Borg are actually the Prometheans, a faction of deadly cyborgs that were created when a scientist combined magic and cybernetics to great effect. It worked well enough until, you know, the killings began.

The dev team said that it’s not slacking off in its design for this faction: “The manufactured arms, legs, eyes, etc. of the Prometheans were all created specifically for Ship of Heroes. For example, a player can see through the legs of the Promethean Firebrand below because her legs are sophisticated props — we did not begin with human legs and just dunk her lower body in cyber paint and call it good.”

City of Titans on endgame, alting, PvP, business models, lockboxes, and whales

June 16, 2017 24 comments

The first and most-backed City of Heroes successor City of Titans has a couple of dev pieces out this month answering questions posed to Missing Worlds Media this past spring. The Q&A itself is relatively brief, letting players know that powerset interactive effects (like team combos) are not on the table, minions will be customizable, the team is working on ways to thwart gold spammers and bots, PvP has a Rock Paper Scissors design goal, and the game is alt-centric but “won’t be ignoring endgame content.”

“Not only will there be content released for the entire level range throughout its lifetime, but we’ve designed several systems, both content centric and others, to enhance the experience of alting,” says the studio.

Last week, MWM told fans that City of Titans model will be a hybrid of a sub and free-to-play system, with an up-front cost that comes with complete access to the game and VIP status for a three months. It’ll also come with an optional subscription and a stipend of currency, dubbed Stars, for spending in the cash shop.

Ship of Heroes fires up a red-hot powerset

June 22, 2017 6 comments

[YT]JLNEW_EHGro[/YT]
Meanwhile, in the deep void of space, a fire has broken out on a starship. Jets of flame and a rain of red-hot meteors scour the deck, sending people running for safety. It’s OK, however, it’s just a superhero putting his powers to practice.
Ship of Heroes released a video today showing two interesting elements of the game, starting with the Fiery Blast powerset. It’s a pretty straight-forward pyro build, with lots of fireballs and flame buffs to satisfy even the most hardcore Human Torch fan. This is the first of eight powersets that the team has vowed to show off this year, and the devs stress that the animations and effects are not final.
The team also showed off its signature Justice Corp building, where Bat-person, Superdude, Amazing Woman, Ocean King, Bird Sidekick, Lightning McGuy, Verdant Lampshade, and Venusian Hitchhiker presumably meet to combat evil. On the rooftop is an area where players can test out their powers without worrying about pesky aliens dying or fighting back.
Ship of Heroes is hoping to start alpha testing by the end of the year. Take a trip to the Justice Corps HQ and roast a few marshmallows with the fire powerset after the break!

City of Titans demos animations in new video

June 23, 2017 4 comments

[YT]ZBnR0SsLUv0[/YT]

City of Titans has this week posted a new video dubbed “Animation while Holding Objects,” which kinda sounds boring, but it’s a superhero MMO — you’re not gonna get far without some sweet spinning melee moves, right?
“What to Look For: It’s a big sword attack animation, but he’s holding a bow in his other hand,” says Missing Worlds Media.

“Proving we can do this opens new possibilities for chaining attacks using different weapons/props. Also, the changing FX – as we explained in our powers update, YOU’RE going to be able to pick which one you get.”

On the other hand, MWM says to ignore
“almost everything else. Animations, FX, and props are ours but all else is placeholder/test environment.”

Take a peek — it’s progress!

Ship of Heroes gets down and dirty with its street sweeper powerset

Hearing that something is coming “soon” is the bane of every MMO player; it technically qualifies as a time frame, but it’s vague and unclear and could mean any point between “a few weeks” to “next year.” The good news is that the alpha test for Valiance Online will be starting sooner than that; the latest update from the development team explains that while the game’s update cadence has fallen behind briefly, that has more to do with getting everything properly ready for the alpha launch. Now that Valiance Online is running its investor alpha test, more eyes are turning to this superhero MMORPG and seeing it more as an actual game than an intriguing concept. And with any alpha test comes the inevitable patch that improves and iterates on the foundation.

This week’s patch adds weapons and particle effects to most powersets, making them sparkle and shine. It also addressed a nasty bug that prevented said powers from working, added collision with solid objects, increased performance, and threw in more environmental art.Read more

Ship of Heroes talks indie scope, community positivity, and designing the world

August 28, 2017 5 comments

Ship of Heroes is gearing up for PAX with drop-ins with community vloggers, including The Positive Gamer, who has a flythrough video of Apotheosis City in the game accompanied by an interview with Heroic Games CEO Casey Mcgeever, Environmental Artist Eric Gooch and PR lead Justin Roberti.

Mcgeever shows off some of the newer corners of the city, including some of its more unusual, organic architecture and tactically designed bits (glass ceilings that provide cover, for example). The group also demonstrates how players will move between levels of the ship — remember, the “city” part is only one level of the spaceship the whole shebang is flying on.

There are even massive “windows” out of the cityscape that look out into the starry void and betray the white clouds and blue sky in the level.

Heroic says it’s focused on creating a positive community, and crafters and market monkeys, take note: All that is still planned for the game, including an auction hall, though that last may not make it for launch.Read more

One of City of Heroes’ best features is going to be making a reappearance in its spiritual successor. Valiance Online confirmed to Massively OP that a sidekicking system is in the works for the superhero MMO.

“We have sidekicking coded already,” the team tweeted. “Working on the UI. We’re adding the ability to right-click on someone and get a radial menu with options.”
Over on the visual side of the project, a recent Unity3d magic effects video by Kripto289 has both the development team and fans salivating over the idea of bringing this creator on board for good. It could happen in the future, says one of the game’s developers.

Ship of Heroes readies combat alpha, shows off a massive raid test

http://massivelyop.com/2017/11/30/ship-of-heroes-readies-combat-alpha-shows-off-a-massive-raid-test/

It’s a hundred identical superheroes in hot pants facing off against a giant robot, and that robot does not stand a chance.

The following video may look a little odd, but it’s an important one for the Ship of Heroes team. It shows an internal large-scale raid test in which a hundred player clones duked it out in the same instance at the same time, maintaining a 30 frames per second rate throughout. The team says that these numbers shows how the superhero MMORPG will be able to pull off incredible fights among large groups of players and enemies in the future.

“So far, no other MMORPG using Unreal Engine 4 has publicized numbers this large,” a press release said. “Apparently the devs at Ship of Heroes are planning to provide large raids for at least 50 players right from level 1. This stands in a marked contrast to the common MMO trend of making raids endgame content that require grinding or buying loot boxes — or both.”

City of Titans shares details on creating its mission lines

http://massivelyop.com/2017/12/01/city-of-titans-shares-details-on-creating-its-mission-lines/

There’s already a lot of lore floating around for City of Heroes-inspired indie MMORPG City of Titans, but all of the lore in the world doesn’t mean much if you never get to see any of it in the game. So the latest development update is about the process of making even the game’s simplest missions take shape.

There are three different sorts of missions outlined (self-contained Tips, game-spanning Sagas, and area-related District Stories), but this particular development entry is just about bringing a self-contained tip from concept to completion.

Tips are the shortest and simplest mission type, meant to make up quick half-hour play sessions, starting with a tweet-length summary of the major plot points. While the goal here is to make these missions fairly lore-agnostic, Read more

Ship of Heroes recaps 2017, teases Christmas event, and looks ahead to 2018’s beta

Who says you have to have launched to have holiday events? Not Ship of Heroes. The City of Heroes-inspired indie superhero MMORPG has a new video out this afternoon teasing what will eventually become its Christmas event once the game is in a playable state.

“Meltdown is collecting Christmas gifts by racing around Apotheosis City,” Heroic Games explains. “As he finds each one, he opens it and receives both in-game money (Dust), and a gift that goes into his inventory. We’re also showing picture-in-picture clips of the most important milestones SoH has achieved in each of the last twelve months. Through the PiP, we are sharing an overall tale of success, of moving from a website with a bit of concept art and story, to our current working game prototype.”
The studio is also reminding fans that it’s still planning on launching open beta by the end of 2018 and that donations – with their associated rewards, including access to the alpha – are still open.

Ship of Heroes gives more love to its warehouse district

January 18, 2018 5 comments

ship-of-heroes-1-860x280.jpg

Who knew that warehouses could be so exciting? Don’t say such things to Ship of Heroes, because this superhero MMO is currently enthralled with its improvements of what could otherwise be a mundane locale. It’s here where player heroes will go for a quick fight or an involved mission, so it’s kind of neat to see the starting point of future content.

The dev team said that it designed this district from first-hand experience: “Our team has a lot of expertise in industrial engineering, and it shows — while some parts of the city are markedly futuristic, many details in the Warehouse District are true to life. Even in the 25th century, humans still need things like cranes to lift heavy objects, and air conditioning units to transfer heat away from complex machinery. These simple solutions are both practical, and physically tough enough to survive stray shots when Nagdellian raids move through the area.”

Want a closer look? Massively OP’s MJ recently went on a super-powered tour of the district with the dev team. Read more

Superhero indie MMOs City of Titans, Valiance Online, and Ship of Heroes say they’re not in a race
