Ship of Heroes demos Apotheosis City in new video

January 3, 2017 15 Comments

Just one month ago, we learned of the existence of yet another City of Heroes spinoff project: Ship of Heroes.

And it’s literally a ship — the premise is that everyone’s on a big ol’ superhero spaceship that’s planet-hopping the galaxy. Today, studio Heroic Games has a new video out demoing the core city’s simulation on said spaceship.

“This video shows off the Arch in the geographical center of Apotheosis City, the first playable level of the MMORPG game,” say the devs. “The Arch is a part of the ship’s systems and it refines Unobtanium dust which is used as the in-game currency. As such, the Arch is a frequent target of attempted alien invasions.”

Massively OP Interview: Why Ship of Heroes is taking City of Heroes into space

January 17, 2017 39 Comments

What happens when a group of dislodged City of Heroes fans attempt to bring back the spirit of their favorite MMO while marrying it to another favorite geek pastime (in this case, Star Trek)? You end up with Ship of Heroes, an in-development title that's holding a torch for the popular superhero MMO... in space. We sat down with Heroic Games CEO Casey McGeever to find out more about this potential game.

Massively OP: For those a little unfamiliar with the project, can you give us your quick elevator pitch for what Ship of Heroes is?
Casey McGeever: Ship of Heroes is a new MMORPG in development, which is a spiritual successor to City of Heroes. We're combining the best elements of hero and sci-fi games in a setting 500 years in the future.

Ship of Heroes reveals signature characters, costume slots

January 18, 2017 14 Comments

City of Heroes spiritual successor Ship of Heroes has a new dev blog out today on what it's calling one of its "signature heroes": the body-armor-bedecked Ambassador.
"Ambassador is an invulnerability tanker with high resistance and defense. Ambassador’s given name is Jonathan Cohan, and he was born aboard the FHS Justice. Family legend suggests that he may be descended from a super-hero of old Earth, but surviving records are inexact, and his ancestors tried to keep the family’s history secret. He can be seen and contacted on multiple decks of the ship, and will also give interested players at least one task force."
Probably the most important bit for players is the note that the character creation system makes space for "items for helmet, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, pants, belt and feet."

Heroes and Villains explains its goals for seamless zoning

January 26, 2017 6 Comments
http://massivelyop.com/tag/heroes-and-villains
Heroes and Villains was one chunk of the original trifecta of superhero MMORPGs that sprang from the grave of City of Heroes, but it's probably the one least known to the MMORPG community after City of Titans and Valiance Online, never mind the relatively new Ship of Heroes, which brings the count to four.

The hook for H&V is that it's a "casual, community-focused" MMO, developed by volunteers, but it doesn't have the same level of videos and demo work out yet.

However, Plan Z Studios released a new dev post this week on the specifics of the game's zones. "We've been doing some more design work on how non-continuous zone transitions are handled," the team writes. While 2004's City of Heroes made use of loading screens that masked transitions between zones, in Heroes and Villains, "all adjoining zones can be crossed back and forth seamlessly, and the same underlying tech can be used to allow instant transitions between non-continuous zones."Read more

Ship of Heroes asks for early UI feedback

February 1, 2017 6 comments

The UI matters a lot in an MMORPG -- at least if you're going to be staring at it pretty much constantly while you're playing the game. So what should the Ship of Heroes UI look like? Yes, "like the City of Heroes UI," the game is already there on that point. But what about colors and positioning? That's what the developers are asking with the latest dispatch from the development team.

Two different early versions of the UI are available for fans to examine, mostly differentiated with colors for health/resources and the style of the game's hotbars.

Future would-be players are invited to offer feedback on the game's forums about which version looks better and which one no one should ever want to use, although it's hard to make many long-term decisions based solely on UI screenshots. You're supposed to hide the UI before you take screenshots, after all.

City of Titans offers up some meaty setting fictionRead more

February 9, 2017 One comment

The police in City of Titans have a rough road to walk. They're dealing with organized crime and the usual thousand vices and harms that a bunch of human beings packed into a single city will produce, of course; that's normal. But they're also dealing with superhuman enforcers, supervillains, and criminal syndicates who can literally read your next thought before you make it. The most recent bit of fiction from the team shows just how a simple collar in the city can turn into a superpowered brawl.

As the fiction opens, an officer has the drop on Castilucci, former member of the Black Rose. It's an open question of who's going to shoot first... and then it becomes a very different question a few moments later when backup arrives. It's a quick read, but we don't want to give away the whole plot here; take a gander to get a look at policing the superhuman from the fictional side.Read more

Valiance Online devs take the alpha client out for a test drive

February 11, 2017 Justin Olivetti 13 comments

Early access is for chumps. If you really want to be in on the ground floor, you need to land yourself a spot on the development team so that you can experience early, early access.

Of course, that takes years of work, possible relocation, and actual skill, so let's explore the next best thing, which is to watch the devs play the game while you drool a bit in envy.

Speaking of which, the team at Valiance Online is definitely enjoying the game's alpha client, as evidenced by several of the videos posted on the official forums. For the low, low price of clicking a button, you can see these superheroes in action, combat, leveling, the user interface, and other various mechanics.Read more

Ship of Heroes posts a Kickstarter countdown on its main page

February 22, 2017 12 comments

Whenever we here bring news about a new indie title, there's always at least one person asking in the comments about when the Kickstarter is starting. It's not even cynical at this point, just a predictable eventuality. Of course, usually the answer to that question is unclear, since most teams announce the Kickstarter date around the same time the Kickstarter actually starts.

http://massivelyop.com/tag/ship-of-heroes
Ship of Heroes has opted instead to launch a Kickstarter countdown on its main page, so you can see exactly how long it will be before the game launches its Kickstarter project.

As of this writing, there's a bit over a month left on the countdown timer, although the lack of any official announcements about the timer may or may not indicate that it's an intentionally long period. I suppose we'll see in about 40 days after this writing, yes? It's something to mark your calendars for, at least.Read more

City of Titans shows off the creations of the Builder

February 23, 2017 13 comments

Making a city is hard work. This is true even if you're working on City of Titans and your main focus is upon making a city which is sufficiently plausible as a superhero playground.

The latest development post talks about how the team is making that task a bit more doable with the help of a Builder, a specialized tool that allows the team to quickly assemble buildings throughout the city to look hand-assembled rather than just making generic blank boxes.

Since the game's city is in New England, laying out the streets correctly (i.e. according to insane logic from hundreds of years ago that subsequently got paved) and making sure the shape of everything looks right is already a time-consuming process. \

The game opts for the faster method of making the buildings by having a stock set of "building parts" which can be combined into a structure, which would normally still require a fair amount of time for a given modeler to turn those parts into a plausible building. However, the Builder can be fed information and simply produce a viable building in moments. Check out some video of building creation just below.

Ship of Heroes plans April Kickstarter, alpha to run into next year

February 24, 2017 7 comments

Are you watching the Ship of Heroes Kickstarter countdown? Have you set it to your main tab when you boot up your browser? Our eagle-eyed tipsters noticed the countdown timer early, but the Heroic Games team is ready to talk about it today.

April 4th is the Kickstarter launch day, says the team's new press release.
"The crowdfunding effort will run for about a month, and will include a creative variety of in-game rewards and recognition. Heroic Games has not yet announced the intended dollar goal for the Kickstarter campaign, but all donations will go directly toward the continued rapid development of Ship of Heroes."
After the Kickstarter, the Ship of Heroes studio will run multiple alpha tests this year and next, "then beta on a relatively quick schedule." Kickstarter donors will also have first crack at those alpha slots.

Ship of Heroes demos combat ahead of April Kickstarter

Ship of Heroes studio Heroic Games is clearly conscious of the MMORPG playerbase's demand for gameplay videos before Kickstarter, which is likely why this week it's put out out a brand-new video showing off combat in the superhero MMO.

So how it's looking? Not too shabby for alpha, though it takes a bit to really get going and the demo character (signature hero Meltdown, built in the player-accessible character creator) is happily setting aliens (Nagdelians) on fire. Fire blasters are going to be happy, anyway. Heroic tells us that the video was shot inside the playable Apotheosis City and that the UI and targeting system are complete.
"Meltdown utilizes six different powers in the video – four attacks and two self-buffs. The attacks are a ranged location AOE, a ranged targeted AOE, a single target attack, and a short range cone attack. Meltdown is able to buff his damage and later his health regeneration (useful in boss fights). [...] The [enemy] soldiers and lieutenant each demonstrate two ranged attacks with different damage levels, and the lieutenant additionally has a slow recharge power to call for reinforcements. [...] Meltdown defeats seven enemies in a fight lasting about 90 seconds, and he takes significant damage."

ity of Titans wants to take you downtown

March 10, 2017 8 comments

What would a superhero MMO look like if it took place in a small town where the tallest building was only three stories? We'll probably never find out because it's almost mandatory to have them skyscrapers for visuals and dramatic perches.

City of Titans spilled some info about its own downtown skyscraper district yesterday, calling it the "beating heart of the city." Following a massive fire in 1908, the downtown rebuilt to include modern marvels of architecture from several different decades and styles.

When the game comes out, players will be able to visit the area to see the tallest building in the game (Liberty Tower), a superhero hangout, and plenty of skywalks.

"Downtown is home to a huge, wildly eclectic range of superbeings and superpowered groups," the team posted. "Some of the more frequently glimpsed groups include enforcers of the Black Rose, the Aether Pirates, and the ePunk Radicals. Prominent supers often seen in the area include Captain Orbit (at the Orbit Room), the speedster Celerity, and a host of others."Read more

Ship of Heroes will seek $400,000 in Kickstarter funding

March 13, 2017 20 comments

Indie superhero MMO Ship of Heroes has just announced the details of its planned Kickstarter campaign, which was previously noted to begin on April 4th: The crowdfunding event will run five weeks and hopes to raise $400,000. Alpha is expected to begin late in 2017.

"The key point to realize is that if you want to play in the Beta, you need to back us in the Kickstarter," Heroic Games CEO Casey McGeever writes.

"If you want to start even earlier and be part of the Alphas starting this year, then your chances go up depending upon how much you donate."

McGeever argues that his team has shown off more of the game at its one-year mark than most comparable games do and that Ship of Heroes is angling to become a "family-friendly gaming community" and "a destination game that one plays for years, rather than content that gets played once and is then abandoned."

Remembering the Torch

http://massivelyop.com/tag/ship-of-heroes
Ship of Heroes has a new video out today that is ostensibly a network demo showing off half a dozen remote developers spread across the country testing out 16 characters in the game.

But what it's really signaling is a tribute to City of Heroes, the long-sunsetted inspiration MMO, as one by one the characters raise torches plainly in symbolic honor of those who protested in Atlas Park 33 back in 2012.

"We remember," reads the video caption.
"Each [dev] individually activated a power called 'Torch' which we coded for this test," says Heroic Games.

"No server, login, connection or client problems occurred during the test. As far as we know, no other pre-Kickstarter MMORPG has published a network test of this kind before."

The Statesman in MXM is a Disservice to City of Heroes Fans

Posted Mar 22, 2017

General | Editorials | 38 Comments

I'm sure it came with noble intentions. NCSOFT knows how much hurt is still felt by the too-soon closure of Cryptic/Paragon's City of Heroes. So when they saw a chance to bring a beloved character from that IP into their upcoming all-star MOBA, they probably leapt at the idea. "We can make those fans happy!" they said. "We can make this game appealing in the West at the same time!" they exclaimed. But that's not quite how it's being seen by the community.Read more

Here's why everyone's pissed off about City of Heroes NPCs in NCsoft's MOBA

March 22, 2017 222 comments

Yesterday, NCsoft took the lid off a secret it's clearly been working on for a while: The company means to introduce a notorious and well-known City of Heroes NPC as one of the characters in its upcoming MOBA, Master x Master.

Here's the thing. Master x Master is actually pretty well-liked around here. The writers we've sent to test it out the past few years came away thinking it was an excellent hybrid PvE MOBA with a lot of MMO elements, a genuinely good entry to the market and something we're happy to cover. So I don't think anyone wishes it, specifically, harm.
But NCsoft? I don't know who told you this was a good idea. It's really not a good idea.

Ship of Heroes touts Unreal Engine 4 progress ahead of Kickstarter bid

March 23, 2017 4 comments

Since our community has City of Heroes on the brain of late, let's recall that there are no less than five games inspired by the late superhero MMORPG on the way, each in a different state of development. One of the newest entries on that list is Ship of Heroes, possibly the most similar to the classic game, except for that whole "oh yeah and the city's on a spaceship" twist.

This morning, Ship of Heroes' Heroic Games posted a press release talking up its Unreal Engine 4 progress.

"Epic Games is excited that Ship of Heroes is being built using Unreal Engine 4," an Epic rep is quoted as saying. "Ship of Heroes is developing quickly and we look forward to having another MMO in the market based on our technology, and the community of artists and coders that utilize it."

Massively Overthinking: The City of Heroes Master X Master debacle

March 23, 2017 19 comments

On Tuesday, NCsoft announced that it plans to introduce Statesman, from the long-sunsetted City of Heroes, as a playable character in its MOBA, Master x Master.
Complications ensued, as anyone familiar with the history of MMORPGs can probably imagine.

For this week's Overthinking, I asked our team of writers -- both those who loved CoH and those who never much played it -- what they think about the whole ordeal. Are gamers right to be angry? What exactly is NCsoft thinking? Have we seen the end of any hope of the game being resurrected or sold, or should we infer just the opposite?

NCsoft rep says bringing City of Heroes toons to Master x Master was his 'passion project'

March 24, 2017 Bree Royce 148 comments

We've been speaking with NCsoft West off the record this week, agitating for publicly printable answers on the Master X Master decision to implement City of Heroes characters (to the loud outrage of disgruntled City of Heroes players). But apparently we won't have to, as some of the answers have been published today.

Lorehound quotes NCsoft MXM Brand Manager Sean Orlikowski as saying that adding Statesman to the MOBA was his personal "passion project for the last two years."

"I saw it as a way to incorporate a character from a beloved title into our universe. Myself and the producer for MXM were both big fans of City of Heroes (I was more on the CoV side, myself) and we worked together to make sure we got his skills, look, and even his VO right since he’d only ever been voiced for a single sentence of a single trailer in the past. The bottom line for me was that nearly all of NCSOFT’s properties were being represented in the game; Aion, Blade & Soul, Lineage II, WildStar, Guild Wars 2, even Death Knight from the original Lineage MMO are in the game. I wanted the West to have proper representation, so we started brainstorming ideas for Western characters to add to Rytlock and Mondo Zax who were already in development. I made the argument for Statesman because the MXM universe offered a way he could be prominent again, and the rest is history."

City of Titans pontificates on the importance of snug spandex, hints at coming 'brand makeover'

April 3, 2017 18 comments

In the cult classic 1995 film Hackers, one of the characters remarked that "spandex is a privilege, not a right." And how true that is, especially when it comes to superheroes. After all, if you're putting your life on the line to save others, you deserve to wear whatever you want.

City of Titans stretched out the subject of spandex for a post on its costume art design. The team said that it's incorporated a nice variety of outfit material to empower player creativity:

"We needed spandex to have a wide range of choices for both patterns and textures. We needed to build support for control, expansion, and flexibility into every angle. We needed to make sure that both the modern and the classic are not forgotten, but brought forward to the modern day."

City of Heroes-inspired MMORPG Ship of Heroes has canceled its Kickstarter bid

April 7, 2017 54 comments

The team behind Ship of Heroes has just announced that it’s canceling its Kickstarter. Since the crowdfund’s launch on April 4th, it had raised only $35,138 of its $400,000 goal.

“We’ve had a very successful first day of fundraising, and then a slowdown,” Heroic Games’ Casey McGeever told backers in today’s update. “It does not look to us like we will reach our current goal of $400,000. So we did what we usually do, we listened to you, our supporters, to see what you are thinking. And we have drawn some conclusions. We went to Kickstarter too early. Our goal was high, and surprisingly many potential donors are only hearing about Ship of Heroes for the first time right now; they are understandably confused about some aspects of the game, and hesitant to support it just yet.”

Consequently, the team has vowed to cancel the Kickstarter and return to development while “raising awareness of the game.” A donation option will eventually be available on the game’s website for those who want to chip in.

Valiance Online is developing stunning special effects

April 13, 201 23 comments

When Valiance Online puts out its next playable alpha build, it may just be the visual effects that will send players jumping up and down for joy.
“I think the area that you’ll see the most significant progress in is visual effects and rendering. We’re currently implementing aura and some impact effects, but I’m sure that’s what people will be most excited to see,” the team said on the forums, going on to post a video showing some jaw-dropping power effects in Unity3D.

The team has also made progress on character creation options. Expect to see boatloads of sliders that will allow players to sculpt anything from a delicate elf to a grey-skinned alien to a big-brained mastermind. Is it too soon to start thinking about what you’re going to make in this game? Never!

Valiance Online on alpha, Steam, and the character generator of your dreams

April 17, 2017 13 comments

Expect “big changes” in the way Silverhelm Studios handles superhero MMORPG Valiance Online’s development going forward, the indie group tells future players and testers in a new dev post today.

Silverhelm says that about five months ago, it

“shifted from a feature implementation and prototyping development stage to an aggressive content development and content testing phase,”

with a renewed focus on transparency, the map, content coding, tools, mob scripting, and the character generator (shown down below), all in the service of preparing for an alpha release and then, eventually, release on Steam.
“Our marketing team is also gearing up for Alpha release, and building their launch campaign for the project. Alongside them, our business team is preparing for the Steam launch and resuming talks with interested investment parties as they start planning to strengthen our infrastructure’s integrity. Our plan is to have the Alpha run for at least 1-2 months.

The first phase of testing will be reserved for those that have donor status with the project. As people donate money they will, of course, be given immediate access to the game.

They will also receive all of their accumulated donor rewards that are available in the game at that time.

Over time we will also add additional testers drawn from people registered on our forums and later, open testing to the public at large. The Steam launch is pivotal for us and is anchored loosely on how financial negotiations mature with interested parties, and how well the Alpha is received by our players.

We’re in no rush to Steam, and it has always been our goal to have a well-established and highly refined product before heading to that market.

City of Titans lets you call the shots with your powers

April 28, 2017 14 comments

Are you ready to handle the awesome responsibility of being able to make your own powers? City of Titans thinks so, which is why it’s including something called “aesthetic decoupling” in its superhero MMO.

The basic concept is that a power’s visuals and damage are separate; players will be able to select from a wide range of visuals to do the same damage, just with different flair. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary powers from which to choose, along with a couple of standard attacks that everyone gets and the expected travel powers.

Valiance Online previews City Hall and the hospital

May 5, 2017 3 comments

The team behind Valiance Online wants to show you everything there is to be seen within the game. Of course, you can’t see it yourself at the moment, but that’s all right; the development team is more than happy to highlight some screenshots for you, showing off the City Hall platform and two shots of the Landvik Memorial Hospital for future players from the current internal tests.

Once players are actually in the test, the plan is to continue publishing screenshots from both players and developers on a regular basis, so everyone can see what’s going on in the world. For now, though, it’s just internal test shots. You’ll have to mentally add the swarms of players and particle effects.

Valiance Online’s capital city hall is ‘akin to the Pentagon’ for supers

May 10, 2017 11 comments

Back in April, Silverhelm Studios told players it was instituting “big changes” in the way it was rolling out information for City of Heroes-inspired indie MMORPG Valiance Online, with a renewed emphasis on transparency. So far it’s delivered on that promise, as over the course of just the last few weeks, it’s begun posting development roadmap snapshots, mulled over sidekicking, previewed in-game buildings, and posted a map of the game world.

This week, it’s posted another look at the city hall of Skyeline, a tiered building with more lore than you can shake a cape at.
“The final structure that stands today is as glorious in appearance as it is in capability. Made from an amalgam of composite and newly generated Haelan brand synthetic metals, City Hall is a bastion of gleaming silver, mirrored glass and alabaster stone. It has multiple floors that begin on the lower second tier of Skyeline’s layers and proceeds twenty stories tall to end above the third tier. The building’s bowed hexagonal arch shape allows visitors to the city to walk under city hall to the Prisma Celeste and Memorial grounds beyond. A series of white marble and bronze accented stairs leads up either side of the main entrance to the many offices of the various departments contained within.”
