Gran Torino Not Dirty Harry Flick

There have been rumors abound that Clint Eastwood's newest flick Gran Torino is another in the long line of Dirty Harry flicks. This is Hollywood so of course if could be possible that a 119 year old man is still roaming the city streets as a police officer.

Luckily we won't have to see Dirty Harry or his walker chasing after bad guys as Gran Torino is NOT a Dirty Harry flick as debunked by Moviehole - who got a chance to piece through the screenplay.

So what is the flick about? Says the movie site:

There is… a 1972 Grand Torino. The car is the prized possession of the film’s central character (he doesn’t budge when his granddaughter mentions that she’d like the car when pop finally keels over) a senior named Walt, grandfather and local sour-puss. When a local Asian boy named Tao attempts to steal the car, Walt, against the advice of others (largely the local priest), forms his own form of punishment.

Ultimately, Walt sets Tao on the right path – giving him a job (even if it’s just doing things around the house for the old man) and teaching him how to communicate with others (there’s some VERY funny stuff in it where Walt has Tao practice his newly honed-speaking skills on the local Barber). Yes, despite its dramatic moments, this is a comedy – a witty, coming-of-age, buddy comedy (yes, you can have all three) with heart.

Sounds like a lot of fun! He's like Mr. Miaygi but with no karate! Hey! We can combine this movie with Dirty Harry and he can teach tao to shoot things!

I like the sound of this. I really can't wait for another drama from Eastwood. His speciality.

*Cries tears of sorrow*

I think The Dead Pool is a serviceable film, but Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer and Sudden Impact are classics in my book. I was definitely hoping this was another Dirty Harry flick *Sighs*

So whats with all the secrets?

Guess Clint wanted to surprise us with another film. Or maybe he was still tweaking the synopsis and writing the screenplay?

The movie just sounds like another Eastwood Oscar-bait movie. :csad:

Any updates on this?

Found this under Oscar Contenders....

TheChangeling (Oct. 24) and Gran Torino (December). Clint Eastwood directs both dramas, the former starring Angelina Jolie and the latter himself. "Clint Eastwood never lets us down," says Sasha Stone, who runs the Oscar blog AwardsDaily.com. She adds that anticipation is particularly high for Gran Torino, about a classic-car owner who confronts his own prejudices when an immigrant family moves next door. "That's being kept under wraps, and when he does that, that's when you've got to pay attention," Stone says, noting the come-from-nowhere momentum of the filmmaker's Letters From Iwo Jima two years ago.

When it was first announced, rumors began to circulate that Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino was a new Dirty Harry film. That rumor turned out to be bunk, but we haven’t heard much about the project since. That is until now. Eastwood spoke briefly about the film while doing press for The Changeling.

In Gran Torino, Eastwood plays Walt Kowalski, a racist Korean War veteran who reluctantly bonds with an immigrant Asian neighbor over a classic car - his 1972 Gran Torino. Eastwood describes his character as “unflattering and potentially controversial”, and says the film “slams both prejudice and political correctness.”

I’m a weirdo in it. I play a real racist (...) It’s a great time in life (to do that) because, you know, what can they do to you once you’re past 70? There’s nothing they can do. But it also has redemption. This Hmong family moves in next door, and he has been in the Korean War, in the infantry, and looks down on Asian people and lumps everybody together. But finally they befriend him in his time of need because he has no relationship with his family.

Warner Bros is planning to release Gran Torino in New York City on Christmas Day, but no wide release date has been officially announced.

First Look: Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino

Warner Bros has finally started marketing Clint Eastwood’s new action drama Gran Torino. In the film, Eastwood plays a disgruntled racist Korean War vet named Walt Kowalski, who sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong immigrant teenage neighbor (played by newcomer Bee Vang), who, as part of a gang initiation, tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.Walt ends up confronting prejudices that have isolated him. The poster shows Eastwood with his M-1 rifle in hand, standing in front of his Gran Torino.

Eastwood, who says this will “probably” be his last film as an actor, tells USA Today a little bit about his character:

“He worked on the line in the Ford plant and retired and had this one car he bought himself. It’s sort of a symbol of his days with the Ford plant. The M-1 is sort of a symbol of his days in the military. … He’s clinging to the memory of the war. You’ll find out when you see it, some of (the memories) are not as pleasant as others. That helps make him even tougher to get along with.” … “Walt helps him get a job and helps him toughen up a bit. (Walt) doesn’t work construction. He’s retired. But he gets the boy in through a buddy, an old crony. They take him in and try to show him how to handle himself in life.”

Warner Bros has also announced a December 17th release date for the film, which puts Torino in line for Award consideration.

Eastwood movies = Overrated. There. Someone had to say it.

Strangely enough Eastwood facial expression is a perfect response to Matt's post.

It's intersting knowing a bit more about the film, it's not quite what i was expecting.

Just curious, what were you expecting?

I was expecting a straight coming of age drama between the boy and Eastwood, but the gang element and trying to get the kid on the straight and narrow is more interesting in actuality. It's now listed as a action/drama and Eastwood having that old M-1 on the poster i think hints at some skull cracking!

Yeah that was the first time I read about the gang element as well.

I have a feeling as well that Eastwood will kick some ass, especially if it's his last role.

Do you think we'll see a trailer soon?

Anybody who knows me...

....will know I'll love that poster....

...and I do....

Why?

It's Clint Eastwood.

As an armed bastard again.

I'm goddamn rejoicing here. :D

It really seems like the ideal last role for the legend IMO

According to the USA Today article, the trailer is with 'Changeling' this Friday.

I like the poster quite a lot and I'm really looking forward to the trailer for this film and to seeing Eastwood back in action.
