Cloud Atlas

Unless the movie scores big at the awards and/or is a box office success , no matter how the groundbreaking this flick is , it won't have an impact on the general audience.
And i'm saying this as a huge Wachowski fan.

Doesn't matter. Several films that initially flopped were appreciated later and are now considered classics and advanced the medium.

Unfortunately that attitude has become a common tendency for people to use now as a defense for films that just aren't all that great that they happened to enjoy personally.

The whole "nobody appreciates it now but in 10 years...". Maybe and maybe not? the truth is most films that have been panned or bombed in history have stayed that way. It's really only a select few that have made the leap.

I'm talking in general though not specifically for Atlas, i just hear that argument too often now for films that bomb or get bad reviews.

Well sure, but it's one thing to push the boundaries of narrative, visuals etc. and it's a whole different thing when films aren't all that groundbreaking.

I'm guilty of what you say when it comes to Prometheus, but I think Cloud Atlas warrants this particular argument.

This is gonna be a gamechanger. A flop probably, but a gamechanger.

The only change will be for the Wachowskis who probably won't get another big budget movie unless it has Matrix in the title.

Critics aren't fawning over it.

This was independently financed anyways.

To be perfectly honest though, while I really liked the film I didn't find much about it to be at all ground breaking. While it is true that there is a dearth of intelligent large scale films, its not like they've never happened before and its not as if this film will be the last, nor is it the best of them.

I LOVED this movie. I really did. At first I was confused because I was trying to pay extra attention to things and connect dots that didn't need connecting, but once I just stopped and let the story happen it was just wonderful. It's a long movie, but never did I feel bored or wished it would hurry up. It's a movie that will take a number of additional viewings to really get a grasp on it all. I was extremely worried leading up to this movie because I saw the potential for disaster and I can safely report that it wasn't the disaster I was expecting. I'll probably go see it again sometime next week. 9/10 for me.

Also, the score was magnificent. I went out and bought it after the movie and am thoroughly enjoying just listening to the music alone.

WOW, what a DUD this was.

Some truly beautiful moments and interesting concepts within, but the pacing was horrendously slow at times. There are so many themes floating around here, not to mention the themes and "messages" of the film are so heavy-handed that it feels as if the film is attempting to slap the viewer in the face.

Yeah, you definitely have to pay attention. I was curious to see how everything was going to tie up within each time period, but I can get how some may get antsy.

The critics weren't kidding. Either you're gonna love this film or hate it with a passion. It's a polarizing movie, that's for sure.

I, myself, loved it.

Just saw it and man I am in love with this film with subtitles...I need to rewatch this film again to understand everything. But the crowd loved the sub-plots and stories to everything and I certainly enjoyed how it ended.
Great film, so much behind the story as well

I could have used subtitles at times.

I loved it, I admire this film's ambition, I can't wait to see it again.

However, all the things Cloud Atlas does, Millenium Actress did better and in half the time.

I want to love it though haha. There's nothing more that turns me off as a movie goer than seeing a long movie that I end up hating lol

So the UK is not getting this until February.... What a bummer.

I think the standouts for me were Doona Bae and Broadbent's characters. You really root for those two. I was glad to see Halle back in a big budget thing as well, and Hanks....he does what he does best, semi-wacky characters.

Eh didn't care for it. Waay too long, some of the stories like Broadbent I just didn't like. the make up was horrendously terrible. I really liked Tom Hanks and the whole idea of the movie but I don't think it lived up to its ambitions

I agree, especially Doona Bae. I was really pulling for them, more so than any of the others

That whole storyline with Bae as the android is easily the best thing about the film. Along with Broadbent, Ben Whishaw, and Jim Sturgess.
