Cloud Atlas

Forgot to mention, a moment I loved as it happens was Broadbent's taunting of the old folks watching him through the windows of the home with "Soilent Green, it's people!" In context of other parts of the film, that line is even better.

After my second viewing, I think Frobisher's story is my favorite. I really resonated with me for some reason.

So all debates about the films worth or the significance of its apparent economic flop, how do you guys feel about the characters and the connections that are shown between them, or maybe the degree to which you think the film portrayed that connection?

In some interviews the characters admit that once their main roles were cast that their smallers roles were often spontaneous, but in others they describe some serious though on the part of the Director's in where to put each actor. How do you feel about the casting in respect to the supposed connections between the characters?

Also what did you think of Weaving's role in the "After the Fall" scenes?

Does anyone else enjoy seeing Keith David in just about anything as much as I do?

To be entirely honest, I'd have to see it again and really zero in on where all the pieces fall. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those movies I end up watching on blu ray a thousand times and pick up different pieces each time. Just my thoughts on it.

Hugo Weaving's various castings made the most sense to me in that respect.

Tom Hanks' made the least.

Cloud Atlas is one of the most epic and ambitious films i have ever had the pleasure of watching.
Directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer based on the book by David Stephen Mitchell
they present 6 stories laced with, romance, adventure, humor, tragedy and triumph.
There are small stories and large post-apocalyptic and futuristic stories.

These stories have a similar theme the eternal desire for freedom we possess that can be symbolized
through the actions of one,and how that desire is one that comes to fruition time after time.
The stories also include how a chance meeting, act of kindness,a shared love or interest of something
can inspire, lead to good fortune or our downfall.Sometimes the aforementioned sets us on a path
we have crossed before and may have placed at the back of our minds ,but once placed on it again,
we realize how much we desired to walk down it again. How many times have we heard the statements?:
I was influenced by.i follow the example of .
Looking closely at the film you can see who influenced the original writer and the directors.

I admire the cast and their hard work (Tom Hanks,Halle Berry,Jim Broadbent,Hugo Weaving,Jim Sturgess,Bae Doona,
Ben Whishaw,James D'Arcy,Zhou Xun,Keith David,David Gyasi,Susan Sarandon,Hugh Grant)and their patience,patience
that was likely tested a bit as the cast portrayed several different characters under heavy make up.

The film time jumps often as if i was sitting in the theatre with a remote in my hand going back and forth between
one show and another at times it was a bit ovewhelming and sometimes felt a bit drawn out.At times CO dances with
pretention but thankfully overcomes these flaws.

Any other make up team,or artist coming up against the team of CO at any upcoming awards ceremony might as
well go straight to the after parties.

Scale of 1-10 an 8 ½

This is the type of film I'll likely wait for release on blu-ray to watch from the comfort of my home. I think that might be why it flopped...I think a lot of people had the same thought.

a 100 million dollar epic looking film with huge scope that is set in like 6 different time periods is not something to see on the big screen???

it made 9 mil this weekend........... OUCH

I'm still buying it on BluRay, even though I'm not planning to watch in theatres

I don't know the runtime, but it seems like a long movie. And when it comes to really long movies I prefer watching them at home. (unless it's lord of the rings)

I'm sorry but while there were some instances of very good makeup in this film, there were far more misses, some of them extremely bad.

That Asian Hugo Weaving is going to become some kind of meme, like Lou Gossett Jr. in Enemy Mine. It was that ****ed up.

An Asian writer from Marvel comics referred to him as a "bad cosplay Romulan." Accurate.

I found the movie to be extremely mediocre, bordering on bad. The movie is cheesy and obvious and the dialogue was not good. The only story worth while was the future clone story because the actress was good and the actual story was interesting but the whole yellow face make up took me out of the story. I hated it and thought that it was racist. I know that's an unpopular opinion here but I had to state my opinion on it. To be honest I thought that all of the make-up was kinda awful and it always took me out of the film. Sigh, I guess I just don't understand what the film's fans see in it because all I see is bland stories, suspect to bad dialogue, hammy performances, bad make-up and prostetics and a cheesy message that should only be profound to Jr. High Schoolers.

Hugo Weaving's various castings made the most sense to me in that respect.

Tom Hanks' made the least.

"Hugo, can you play all the villains for us?"
"Yes, Mr. Ander-, uh, sure Andy."

"Tom can you..."
"Oh! Can I play these crazy people too?"
"Um... sure."

Clearly they threw just straight reincarnation out the window, as sometimes the comet birthmark character, if indeed it was a character in any sense, passed between all the main actors except Weaving... but it also interacted with all the other actors... so what is the comet birthmark signifying beyond the thematic idea of things passing on? Anything? Who knows...

I thought the movie was well done, but it got waaay too preachy for my taste. Matrix had all sorts of messages about society but it never took the time to tell me "All boundaries can be crossed, because they're all imaginary, just think about it, and you too can break all the rules of society, because that's what good/happy people do..." or whatever it is they said. :whatever:

I think that preachiness, that urgency of message is part of what stretched it out, and caused some of the stories to be redundant at times. There's not enough time in the movie to 'earn' that from the audience so they had to actually come out and say it, and I'm like, "well if you weren't going to show it, you could've cut the movie to two hours..."

Also, the strange-some language was indecipherable, I much prefer the Firefly/Serenity dialect. And that's the True True.

I thought Hanks speaking jive was hilarious.

Is the fake Asian makeup any more racist than a white Jewish Halle Barry, or a ginger Doona Bae?

is'nt the whole move and book theme about reincarnation may it be race, gender, sexuality, etc.

makes sense to have it be same actors

not racist at all but i knew someone would say it is

I knew what the point of the film was because the movie constantly screamed out what the point was. I still don't like yellow face or black face because of the history of it and frankly the make up was horrible any how. It was horrible and unconvicing on Berry, Hanks Strugess and Bae. There is only racist hurtful history associated with yellow face and black face and probably jewish face too. So for the record I don't approve of any of them. I wonder why they chickened out on say putting Hanks and Strugess in black face make-up? hmmm one wonders..

I'm happy to read you guys opinion though as everyone is entitled to theirs. I wasn't trying to covince anyone of anything, I was merely stating that I was disgusted by the yellow face make-up. If you guys weren't offended, fair enough but I was.

I respected the effort and characters they did with the Yellow Face, so it was a lot like Downey in Blackface for Tropic Thunder for me, but without the charm. It'd be different if there was something laughable about the characters, but they were all really solid, as characters, even if the makeup was... weak... at times.

Regardless of how well it does overseas (I think that it will do much better overseas) I'm glad that it's not going to be some huge hit because I could see it giving hollywood the go ahead to feature asian males even less than they do today (seems impossible I know) because then they could always use the "artistic reasons" ploy.

This is my favorite film this year. I saw it a 2nd time today and loved it even more. I guess I can understand it's not for everyone.

For those who saw it did you have have a favorite section? I think mine was the Somni 451 but The Fall one comes close too.
