Clueless endings

American Psycho is one of my all time fav movies. But the ending really made no sence to me. I found some stuff from wikipedia

Much like the novel, this movie does make a satire of the yuppie society. With that view in mind, it is possible to come to the conclusion that the covering up of crimes and murders existed. This is highlighted when Bateman confronts his lawyer, Howard, and him saying that he had dinner with Paul Allen in London just ten days prior. As everyone was confusing Bateman with Halberstam, it is possible that in the fake society, no one really knew who anyone was.

There has been much debate among fans as to what extent the movie was supposed to have taken place in Bateman's mind. There are several instances in the movie where the reality of the events is called into question:
  • After Patrick kills Paul Allen and drags his body through the lobby a blood trail is clearly visible. Later, after Patrick talks to Louis Carruthers, the blood trail is gone.
  • When Patrick engages in a gun battle with the police, he fires at the police car causing it to explode. Patrick then stares at his gun in obvious disbelief.
  • When Patrick returns to Paul Allen's apartment, all evidence of his crimes are gone and there is a real estate agent present who appears to have no knowledge of the events that supposedly transpired there (though the real estate agent's attitude and behavior creates ambiguity as to whether she has knowledge and is covering up the crime or not).
American Psycho 2=WTF

Burton's Planet of the Apes is indeed the most WTF ending ever.

Other films with WTF endings at least fit the film, while it's like Burton's makes no sense just for the sake of not making sense.

Can anyone actually explain it to me?

Films that made me go WTF at first, but after some time to mull it over or repeat viewings, I've been able to wrap my head around:

Mission: Impossible
1.0 (One Point O)
Revolver
Naked Lunch

i thought that the story is very simple. was i wrong?

The story itself is very simple, but just what exactly happens & why gave me some pause. Specifically, the scene where Ethan explains/figures out what happened while images of what actually occurred are played during the false voice over.

Yeah, that scene takes a lot of reviewing.

Personally, I don't care too much for the M:I movies...I pretty much gave up on the series the minute they revealed Jim Phelps (the hero of the television series) as the villian in the first one. :csad:

Though, i'll reserve judgement on M:I3...I got it, I just haven't watched it yet. Heard it was good though.

It is indeed very good, far better than the first two. I was also turned off by the villianization(new word!) of Mr. Phelps.

American Psycho

what exactly happened at teh end.

There's two main interpretations of the movie, which need to be considered independently of the book.
the main one is a commentary on the societal structure of the 80's and how much banality was the rule, people were almost interchangeable and thus when one is missing nobody really cares or notices.

but the one I liked the most was the one a friend came up with, you see

nothing really happened. this was all Patrick's way of dealing with his own emptyness, there was actually nothing done to anyone by him, but just a series of elaborate dellusions meant to keep him from commiting suicide to give his life the meaning it so sorely lacked.
that's why at the end it all seems so bombastic, the way mental illnesses tend to progress and the climax is a big moment of "Huh?" for almost all involved.

I prefer a mixture of both theories. Its clear that some of it was in his head (like the part where he blew up the car with a single bullet) and then the part where he speaks to the owner of that one guy's apartment its clear there was a cover up.

I always say its bull**** when people say you have to read the book. That means they made a crappy adaptation..... but in this case, it does help you understand. The whole "this is not an end" thing (which they didnt really use in the movie) helps you out. Its really a combination of his craziness, the murders he did do, the yuppie culture's obliviousness and need to cover up scandals.

But Silent Hill..... how the hell do you not understand what happened?

I always watched American Psycho believing that come the end of the film it was ALL in Patrick's head. None of it transpired.

My big WTF at the end of a film is for The Descent. What happens there?

another open to interpretation is Matrix Revolutions...

Anyone?

.

Depends if your watching the proper version or the American one.

Basically shes still in the cave and never getting out :)

really? that's it?
ok. thanks. like the decent a lot but ... ya, still good.

what of M:Revolutions....
anyone?

Neo sacrificed himself to destroy the Smiths, compelling the machines and the humans to make a truce. Everyone was freed from the program.
there is also a huge chance that neo was never a human.

fact is that if you want you can talk about the matrix movies for hours. just becccause some people dont want this that doesnt mean that those movies have no depth or are bad.

neo is not a human IMO.

Yeah, the theatricle release in America of The Descent totally screwed it up.

The real ending is that she hallucinates getting out of the cave(she hallucinates throughout the entire film, remember), and when she sees her dead friend in the car it snaps her back to reality. She's sitting at the entrance inside the cave, but refuses to go out. She will simply wait until the monsters find her and eat her. Until then, she'll just rock back and forth and think of her daughter.

As for the ending to the Matrix, it is indeed very interpretive. My biggest question lies with whether or not you follow what is said or what is shown. You have to remember, the Wachowski Brothers are visual storytellers- they are comic fans first, film second. What you are shown suggests that the "real" world was indeed just another Matrix (as shown through Neo's gold vision) and is also supported by Smith coming into the "real" world. But this is never touched upon by the characters in the movie, and we are left wondering.

i got the idea that neo is not human by what they showed at the end of matrix 3.

I get the idea that no one is purely human. The Machines are organic, The humans have machine parts. The lines between both what is human and machine and what is reality and not are completely blurred.

i got that neo isn't human, he was the reset switch and the little girl was the one. that's why at end of revolutions she's smiling and the sun rises... the patterns of human vs. machine is indeed a matrix and is two progrmas vs. each other.

Man...I am sooo glad I couldn't get into "The Matrix".

It justs far too much to figure out.

The archeticts speech in Reloaded seriously gave me a headache as I tried to put it all together.
