There are many mixed views about the Silent Hill movie. Some people love it, some people hate it, some people are somewhere in between. But did the movie make enough money to warrent a sequel? Does the director believe he did the mythology of Silent Hill justice??
My own views on the film are mixed. At first, I really enjoyed it, really loved it. But upon multiple viewings (which I also enjoyed) the flaws became more and more apparant. I think as a stand alone film, without thinking of the games, it does well. And compared to the games, it does rather well still. They changed the story around a little... I think they wanted to go in a different direction with the mythology. It's about... 80% in line with the story of the games. All the symbolism is still there. The whole idea of Hell, Pergueatory, and Paradise. The idea that Silent Hill is shifting between realities. The whole thing of how religion can be abused and distorted.
The film looked great. They really nailed the look and atmosphere of Silent Hill. From the town itself, to the fog, the emptiness, the rusty bikes and broken prams, etc. And the look of 'dark' Silent Hill was also good.Nailed perfectly. Rusty, steely walls. Grate floors. Weird creatures hanging in weird cages, etc.
But there was alot that was wrong. Mainly the script. This film would have been so much better if only the script was better. The dialogue at points is a little shabby. The scene where the screen goes white, and the little girl proceeds to explain EVERYTHING... awful scene.
And there wasn't enough weirdness. You know how in the games there is a much more tense, lonely atmosphere... and there's the weirdness. And the movie also missed the ambiguity. How can I explain the weirdness... those who have played the games know what I mean. The games at points are just VERY surreal. You would question whether the whole thing is a dream. And that's another thing, they definitively set Silent Hill too much in the real world.
