... but will probably never get made.

With many Hollywood movies these days being based on existing franchises, I thought I'd start up a fun little thread discussing franchises that currently aren't in the works or stuck in development hell. Preferably, I'd stick to remakes since new technology and sensibilities could stand to improve on golden oldies and because every game, comic and TV show could be 'adapted' into a movie. Also, do refrain from shouting out movies like 'The Last Airbender' and 'Dragon Ball' since they're a little too recent for a reboot and wouldn't really be in the spirit of this thread. Now, as I started the thread, I guess I should start the ball rolling:

Clue

With Battleship just around the corner and Monopoly being in the works, I think it would be great if they redid the original board-game-based movie itself. As the memorable things about the movie are its setup and characters (who are more caricatures rather than complex personalities) while the details of the murder story itself largely forgettable, this would provide a lot of freedom for the writers to remain faithful to its source material while still coming up with a fresh story to tell.

Moreover, when the movie first came out, it was criticised for its multiple ending gimmick which rendered the murder mystery unsolvable before the summation at the end. However, as shown by games like Mass Effect, writers are now able to scripts with multiple endings that are brought about through tiny differences (e.g. in this case, the presence/absence of or change in certain clues/scenes). Moreover, in this day of DVDs, having multiple endings would be a pretty fun feature since you could pop the DVD in, choose 'random ending' and be faced with some level of mystery all over again.

Anyone have any thoughts/opinions or ideas/wishes of their own?

The Golden Child - It was originally conceived as a straightforward action/fantasy film, and I'd want to see more of that in a remake. Everything would just have a larger scale to it, Numspa's henchmen would be a little more sinister, for example, and make Fu so much more of a badass with that chain!!! I'd still have him rockin' the Nike shirt and the yellow-lens aviators! I'd cast Idris Elba as Numspa, as well. Maybe cast Michael Ealy as Chandler.

A good version of Stephen King's Salem's Lot. It's my favorite Stephen King book, and it's had two crappy TV movies. We need a good theatrical version.

They Live.

That movie is terrible, but it has an awesome premise that begs for a movie that does it justice.

I like They Live. It has a unique 80's quality to it that sells it completely. Plus it's got possibly the greatest street fight ever filmed in it. But I think more could be done with the premise and last I heard Matt Reeves(Cloverfield, Let Me In) was attached to direct a re-adaption of the book/short story that the film was based on so you may get your wish. He said that insead of remaking They Live they instead would be sticking to source material more.

As for Clue, I don't see how the original film can be topped. It pretty much still stands alone as the only good game-to-movie adaption out there. I heard they've been toying with the idea of trying but I'd be suprised if it turns out to be anywhere near as good.

Among the adaptations I would want to see:

- Metroid, directed by Ridley Scott. I mean, this one's a no-brainer. The tone and the atmosphere of the environments in the games, particularly Super Metroid, was influenced by Ridley Scott's Alien, a space horror film. Also, you have Samus Aran, a female protagonist, not unlike Ripley, but one with a more flesh out back story. Using the story in the manga as a starting point, maybe they could go into her home planet being attacked, her parents dying, her becoming a bounty hunter, the origins of Mother Brain, the Chozo, etc. It would be action packed. It would be filmed in real environments and sets, and use practical effects, using VFX only when needed. It would have sex appeal (on the part of Samus), but would have a great story and character development. Sell it as a Space Action Thriller/Horror Film. The audience would eat this stuff up.

Fullmetal Alchemist. Another no-brainer. Film in real locations, like New Zealand or something like that. Mo-cap and practical effects for all the Homunculi (WETA would be good for this). Base it off of the manga and do it as 4-5 films instead of just 3, because of the wealth of material. Sell it as "Harry Potter meets The Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars meets Indiana Jones". Aim it towards the older adult demographic while still appealing to kids. Again, the general public would eat it up.

An adaption of Anne Rice's The Mummy.

Metroid
Clue
The Snow Queen
The Magician's Nephew
Dante's Inferno
Remake of 12 Angry Men
The Hunger Games... Oh wait.

I really, really hope the Coen brothers' adaptation of The Yiddish Policemen's Union gets made.

I'd also love to see the Coens make the sequel to Barton Fink they've talked about. They've talked about the setting being the '60s or '70s, though, so when they would make it depends on when it would be set.

Adaptation:
Halo

Remake:
Moby Dick

Remakes:

Super Mario Brothers
Dragonlance Chronicles

A 90 minute animated movie was done for Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

The Final Programme--this was released as The Last Days of Man on Earth here in the States. A terrible adaption of Michael Moorcock's first Jerry Cornelius novel. Jerry and Miss Brunner were supposed to have merged into a hermaphrodite at the end yet in the movie we get a caveman.

Adaptations:

The Death Gate Cycle by Weis & Hickman
The Elric novels by Michael Moorcock

Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Why haven't we seen Clive Owen play Philip Marlowe yet? That needs to happen ASAP.

A good version of Stephen King's Salem's Lot. It's my favorite Stephen King book, and it's had two crappy TV movies. We need a good theatrical version.

Agreed. I'm gonna tack on The Stand and IT, as well. Just for good measure. It sucks that my three favorite King novels have yet to truly be done justice on screen.

I'd really like a faithful adaptation of I Am Legend. You know, with the proper ending that makes the title actually make sense. Also:

-The Giver

-The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - I wasn't thrilled with the HHGTTG adaptation, but I was still hoping it would be successful enough to warrant the sequel, because this was my favorite installment of the series.

-And while I'm on sequels I wanted that never happened: any other installment from Patrick O'Brien's the Aubrey-Maturin series. Master & Commander is still one of my favorite films, and I really wish it did better because I was dying for another one from the same cast/crew.

Directed by
Adaptation: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Directed By Del Toro

I'd like a reboot of the Mission Impossible film series, with a new and faithful adaptation based on the original TV series. With the new version of the Hawaii Five-0 TV series using all the original characters, I'd like to see a faithful take on Mission with the classic characters of Jim Phelps, Rollin Hand, Cinammon Carter, Barney Collier and Willy Armitage.

It would be a cross between The Sting, Sneakers, Oceans 11 and Leverage.

No more of this Ethan Hunt business with Tom Cruise who ruined the character of Jim Phelps in the first big screen movie of Mission Impossible.

Also I want to see Del Toro's At the Mountain's of Madness. Since R rated movies have dominated so far this year, hopefully it becomes a real possibility.

A remake of Mad Max with Tom Hardy definitely.
