Action-Adventure Cobra Kai - (The Karate Kid Spin-Off)

Memory of part II is sketchy but pretty sure we see a dejected Daniel after senior prom and he tells Miyagi that Ali's just dumped him.

As much as I'd love to see Ali show up, there's not really much of a reason for it, it could come off pretty forced. Like...how many people in their 50s are still in contact with their highschool sweethearts, especially when married & with kids? Or even people that age living in the same area/city? Sure, Daniel & Johnny do, but playing the odds it's probably just as likely she's somewhere else with her own life going on and hasn't even thought about Daniel since the mid-80s.

She doesn't really have any link/personal interest in karate, she wasn't overly-close with Miyagi, she and Daniel didn't seem like they were still in contact over the time that Part II & III spanned from the first (2 years maybe?).

The photograph and reference-or-two to her in S1 seem enough. Acknowledgements from both Daniel & Johnny, but like...it's been 34 years, y'know?

Kinda feel like one or two of the other original Cobra Kai guys might fit better as far as having a place in the story (either still loyal to Kreese, or helping Johnny out), and as far as girlfriends Kumiko from Part II might be easier to work into things with the Japan link, maybe Daniel even taking a few students to Okinawa on some pilgrimage or whatever.

Feel the same. Other than Elizabeth Shue actually wanting to return there really is no need for us to see Ali. Johnny's old crew (primarily Dutch), Terry Silver and Mike Barnes are another matter though - would love to see any of them turn up. Hell, even Chozen could be written in with a valid, vested interest in Daniel.

Terry Silver is the one I want to see show up the most.

But would Johnny Lawrence actually be able to take him in a fight? Or even Daniel Larusso? After all, Silver was instructor level while the other two were students.

Chozen's an interesting one, pretty sure the guy's still acting, so it's a possibility. Like Ali I have no idea how/why he'd turn up though.

Like..."revenge on Daniel", you wouldn't think he'd wait three-and-a-half decades. :oldrazz: Likewise if he'd had a change of attitude and wanted to make amends.

Silver seems like an obvious way to go though, seems really logical now that Kreese is back. I think it'd be really cool to introduce a couple of the old Cobra guys too, mostly the guys from Part I, have one or two of them still with Kreese as high-level career karate guys, and one or two of them who saw the light like Johnny did (the dude who tries to stop Kreese smacking Johnny around at the start of II maybe, forget the character name) opposing Kreese.

We've really gotta see Daniel & Johnny all buddy-buddy by the end of this damn thing too, however many seasons it runs. :woot: Co-running Miyagi-Do.

EDIT: Johnny likely didn't know Silver, Raven, I guess unless he was still around Cobra Kai as a student sometime before the original movie. He'd definitely make an awesome antagonist though, both of Kreese's "chosen" students having an adversarial relationship.

I'm sorta wondering how they're going to handle Kreese too, it'd come off a little cringey if he's still actually fighting people and all, given he's what, late 60s or whatever, 70ish. :) Even Johnny & Daniel are kinda pushing it, thought it was pretty funny seeing Johnny sprain his leg in the pilot throwing that initial kick at Kyler.

Well even if Johnny didn't know Silver, it would still be great to see them fight. But could he take him on, given that Silver probably knows more than him? And Silver also taught Daniel, so he's likely to be better than him too.

I could see the relationship between Johnny and Daniel being like Apollo Creed and Rocky. The two of them started off as rivals but ended up as friends.

I don't want Kreese or Silver becoming more sympathetic though. Keep them as complete villains. Sure, by all means flesh them out, but don't make them anti-heroes at all.

Silver was almost definitely a higher level than Johnny, yeah, however they grade this stuff. Seems he was probably one of Kreese's first students back after 'Nam, and the character was older than Daniel/Johnny even if the actor wasn't.

And yeah, you've kinda gotta keep Kreese that way at this point, even when he was all down-and-out in three he never seemed remorseful about anything, dude's just a macho jackass to the core.

Silver would be an interesting addition but if you include him and Barnes then I guess I have to acknowledge that The Karate Kid III exists, lol. And I don't want to do that, even if they mentioned them in Cobra Kai.

Seriously, that was such a crappy movie, even if the villains were good. Daniel annoyed the living **** out of me the whole time; it was no wonder the love interest blew him off halfway through the movie.

Looking back on threequels, I've noticed that for some reason, they tend to be the films where the lead character becomes unbearable. For example, Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3 is excruciating to watch, and I say that as someone who loves Tobey in the first two movies. It's the same with Shia LeBouef in the Transformers movies. The first one isn't high art by any means and the second one was god-awful, but I thought he did a good job in both movies. But I seriously HATED him in part 3. I wonder if directors and writers worry that the hero is starting to feel stale by the third installment and so they turn all of his annoying traits up to 11 in the threequel.

Not much time had passed between II and III supposedly so it's not surprising that Kreese hadn't changed much. I mean, what motive does he have to. But it would be interesting to see where Silver would fit in.

It would be great if Silver can beat both of them so they have to join forces to take him on. The question is whether Silver can still beat both of them at the same time.

Whoa, holy hate for the sequels, Batman!

*Sweeps Deck's leg*

Eh, I only hate the third one. Part II was pretty good. The Hillary Swank one was pretty terrible though. The “Alpha League”... LOL.

Get Walton Goggins back for a further season

Playing Lee Russell from Vice Principals, 'cause reasons.

Honestly, if Russell and Johnny met each other it would be absolute chaos.

Just got done watching Cobra Kai. What a wonderful surprise. The show is made with so much love and just enough changes to keep things refreshing. It never forgets its roots - the show is completely dedicated to being earnest, and that love is infectious. I'm glad its getting a second season, because I want to follow all of these characters' development even more. Shows a surprising amount of nuance and depth too.

Yeah, I still have the last two episodes to go, but they clearly picked the right team to do this. Really feels like Macchio & Zabka had a hand in conceptualizing it all too, they know these characters like the back of their hands. Even with the 34 year time gap, it all just "feels" right.

Great balance of tone too, from the trailer I was a little worried it might be a little too comedic. But yeah, this is really funny, but there's enough weight to the drama too to make it feel like a legitimate continuation of the movies.

Some of the writing's pretty impressive too, especially with Johnny. They don't take it as far as that whole dumb "Johnny was the good guy in Part I" fan theory, but both he and Daniel are complex enough guys that there's a bit of both at play. Johnny's still an ***hole, but you see where the guy's coming from too, and genuinely feel for him.

One thing that seemed a little weird to me was the flashback ep to '79 with his stepfather though. That guy seemed a more-or-less okay guy in the pilot (grumpy and smartass, but otherwise...), then in the flashback he's this total pr*ck. Makes sense as far as why Johnny would be driven to Kreese as this father figure type, but it just seemed a weird discrepancy from the pilot to that episode.

I like how there are subtle hints at the passing of time between episodes too, makes the training of the kids more believable.

I could see the relationship between Johnny and Daniel being like Apollo Creed and Rocky. The two of them started off as rivals but ended up as friends.

We were THIS CLOSE to Johnny and Daniel doing the Rocky III ending in episode 9. Oh well, maybe we'll get in the season 2 finale?

It sounds more like a series end with that shot than a series finale. Maybe they'll tease Terry Silver or someone else.

Haha! Just finished "Molting". :woot:

Johnny just taking on two tyre-iron-and-molotov-packing bikers with no hesitation whatsoever. :oldrazz: Hilarious.

Those Daniel/Robbie training scenes out in the woods were badass too. That last-move-Miyagi-ever-taught-me stuff, too cool. Lots of the music theme popping up in this episode too.

Also, what are we thinking, Johnny & Miguel's mom are some slow-burn relationship thing, by like season 3 they'll be a couple? You'd kinda figure that'd have to be after Miguel comes back all "lightside" again if that's the arc they're running with.

She want to show her bits, but Johnny says NO! Want money to buy meth and burrito, and faking to hurt Yasmine & Moon.

So, Kreese too will be anti-villain/anti-hero, a human and not a top rated anime villain. Interesting. I bet Kreese, Johnny & Miguel's mom will have a love triangle drama going on. I hope Kreese will wear his My Chemical Romance' Black Parade coat when he tries to court Miguel's mom on a date.

Cue this track up for that love scene if it ever happen. :ilv:

Just saw a couple episodes of this and wow is it way better than I thought it would be. Really hope that in S2 Johnny gets to see how destructive what he was taught can be and that Daniel is given a reality check about not being a total *****e. You can see the underlying good guy in both of them. It would make for an interesting as someone else put it Rocky and Apollo relationship.

Like to see Kreese try to step it up and have Johnny resist, only to have him kick Johnny out. Maybe bring back Silver and/or Barnes. Give Johnny more of a redemption arc. Then have Johnny and Daniel post a pic together on facebook and have Ali like it.

Also it's interesting that Johnny is teaching assertiveness, and Daniel is teaching peace it would make for a nice balance.
