He's good at being that deadpan snarker that Will does when he sees something weird.

:wow: that it made that much in it's first week.

This is like Jackie Chan's biggest hit movie since Rush Hour 2. He was in great need of a massive box office hit after the failure of The Spy Next Door and his last several American movies. Looks like he has another one now. Maybe he should do more movies with Will Smith and his family more often.

Even though he's only producing and his son is in this movie, does this count as another Will Smith mega hit?

Unlike what so many have sworn to, the filmmakers do indeed make an attempt to rationalize why they its called, Karate Kid.

Obviously it helps with the marketing of the film but its also made a pretty important point in Dre's arc.

After watching the movie today I kind of have to ask, did they really do that in the movie? I had heard similar things like this, but I didn't see anything like it. I didn't hear anyone call him that as a nickname, he didn't use, or attempt to use, karate in the beginning (like some people were saying), and I didn't really see anything all that important in his arc related to karate. The only thing I remember is Dre watching some 'do-it-yourself' karate lessons on TV, but that's it.

I agree, it is a very minor nitpick at the end of the day, but it does feel off with the title and the movie's emphasis and focus on the principles of Kung Fu. Did I maybe miss something? I did go to the bathroom a little after the first half of the film, so maybe there was something. I'm mostly curious because I heard there was something in the film that directly referenced the title but never saw it.

Well he does mention how his uncle taught him karate in addition to other forms of martial arts.

And like you said there's the videos that he was 'training' with.

And though it was cut from the movie, there was a scene from the behind the scenes featurette during Dre and Cheng's first confrontation where he refers to Dre as "Karate Kid".

"You want to fight, karate kid?"

[YT]ydZlFwwSrto[/YT]

And obviously the whole point of calling him the karate kid only to be taught kung-fu was to basically say that there's more to martial arts than learning a few kicks and punches.

It wasn't just a change in Dre's fighting style but also a change in how he viewed martial arts as a whole and see that its not about violence, its about peace and harmony...unlike what the evil kung-fu master emphasized.

If anything, it kind of views karate with a somewhat negative perspective...probably why they seemed to cut so much of that from the film and focused on the kung-fu aspect.

yeah his first confrontation with Cheng, he tried Karate, but got his ass kicked basically. Poor kid.

Ah, okay, I must have missed that part when I went to the bathroom then, because I don't remember it.

He did? I just remember him running at him twice and trying to throw a few straight punches. Didn't look much like karate to me, but I don't really know anything about it, so I wouldn't know anyway

How is it that S.A.A.D says crap like this & it goes unnoticed, yet Someone bring's up Cavill, Routh & Welling a little more than they should & the thread gets closed down for a week as punishment?. I think the mods need to get their priorities intact. Seriously.

He was infracted for that, and the post was deleted.

Do not use this thread to complain about the Superman forums.

Yeah I mean.... I think he did haha. His stance he went into before charging him looked like a Karate stance.. lol

He did the crane smack though when he got off the ground and smacked him :awesome:.

It's an ancient form of Karate :awesome:

It's mostly for beginners :hehe:

When
Han & Dre are leaving the evil Dojo, you see the instructor grab Hans hand & Mr Han immediately looks like he's scared for his life & retaliates by grabbing Dre's arm in a sort of rough way. now when i first saw that, i thought immediately that they were gonna reveal later that they used to be old friends & that this guy is an even match for Mr Han, hense why he tensed up & seemed scared.
however nothing came of it & it left a WTF kinda reaction on my face. if anyone knows more about this than me, pls, do tell.

i guess i saw it differently...

if you look at Han as a whole i dont believe he is afraid of the other teacher at all.
i saw it as he was afraid of what he was about to do to the teacher, like kill him in front of his students for teaching them bad things. i think he was afraid of himself and what he would do. Han is a guy that had lost everything and he even considered this guys teachings to be "not kung fu", so i doubt he was scared of this guy at all. He grabbed Dre's arm to diffuse the situation and remain calm so that Dre didnt make any sudden moves.

Hmmm, I dunno. I just went back & watched that part again &
as soon as he grabs Mr han's hand, Mr Han doesn't get a look of determination or anger on his face, like he's about to lose it. He looks both surprised & afraid. I don't know if that was a fault of Chan's as an actor, which I don't believe because Chan is a great actor when given the right material, or if maybe there was a side story between them that was cut & it just looks awekward.
I guess we'll never know, unless something is said about it on the commentary once the Blu Ray is released.

The poll in this thread should be changed to the 1 to 10 scale.... :)

Anybody really surprised about this?

Not that it's too surprising when a movie budgeted at $40 million brings in more than $55 million domestically its opening weekend, but according to Mike Fleming at Deadline, Sony executives were already meeting with writers to have them pitch ideas of where they could take a sequel for the hit Jaden Smith-Jackie Chan remake The Karate Kid.

once again hollywood proves they have no ideas left, you make a sequel to an un needed remake. it ticks me off that 90% movie news I hear now is ethier sequels, prequels or remakes.

I think you're both kind of looking too much into it. I think it was simply Han being afraid of the guy. Chan's character was good, but way past his prime. Even though he took out those students, it was easy to see he was pretty exhausted, and really he mostly let them fight themselves. The teacher was a kung fu master basically in his prime, and obviously not afraid of violence, pretty intimidating guy. I think it was as simple as fear really.

I thought he grabed Dre's hand as a way of protecting Dre, if anything (like a fight) would come of the confrontation.

No, don't think so. If he were doing that he would have stood in front him or something, not grab his arm. No, I think it was fear and overall meekness on the character's part, probably him grabbing Dre was a gut reaction to that. I mean really, if it was anything else he would have stood up to the guy, not backed away and traded Dre fighting in the tournament for not getting into a fight there. I think that's about it, really, unless there was some kind of subplot cut out.

I still think it was just a natural reaction from Mr.Han because of his past history. he has a weakness for Dre.

I was so surprised at how great this film is. Better than the original and easily one of my favorite films in recent years. (just saw it last night)

sheesh, now I can't wait for the next one.

Better than the original

:wow: BLASPHEMY!..hehehe :woot::oldrazz:

Was a good movie though. IMO it followed the original a little to much. certain scenes taken directly from the original that were not done anywhere near as well. I really was hoping for a bit more of it's own flavour with a touch of the original but alas it's a success & I hope, as the director himself has said that the sequel will be completely it's own thing. It's own new adventure, no homages, no copying. So that sounds good.

I give the movie a swift 7.8/10

Interesting. Pretty low score you gave it. I thought it had enough elements from the original to make it feel familiar, while keeping a bit of it's own identity. I found that it just took things from the original and imrpoved on them greatly. (also the car scene was top notch) Totally blew the original away on nearly every level.
