I think sci-fi and or action films thanks to advancements in film tech/f-x deserve remakes at some point but here's a film that does NOT deserve a remake if that is truly what it is. If it's like "Another Karate Kid" then whatever.

Here's the rumor: Apparently Will Smith's son got the lead. I'm still looking for the link. If they are retelling the original story I'll never pay to see it. There can't possibly be demand for this one.

Ok just found the link:

A Karate Kid Remake?!
IGN has heard an interesting rumor.
by Stax
September 27, 2007 - IGN has been informed by a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith's Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub. Weintraub also produced the 1984 film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and its three sequels.

We were also advised that Smith's son Jaden, 9, is attached to star in the remake. Jaden Christopher Syre Smith starred opposite his dad in last year's The Pursuit of Happyness, which was also released by Sony. We understand that this new Karate Kid is currently out to writers.

IGN didn't hear back from Weintraub's office or Smith's reps by time of publish, so until there's official confirmation consider this a rumor.

This is why I hate remakes at times.

I voted no, I'm not anti remakes if it can bring something to a concept that wasn't possible years ago but nothing can be added here.

Never cared about the Karate Kid-movies. But, jesus, how I wish these days that the word "remake" didn't exist.

I just heard about this and was going to make a thread...

This makes me sick and of course I voted no.

I hope the ghost of Pat Morita causes a big fire on set.

I am finally starting to understand the uni-bomber.:dry::dry::dry::dry::dry:

It's just one of those films that could be watched 20 years from now and still hold up 100%. It's ridiclous. I'm all for remakes but this one is stupid. It'd be like remaking Uncle Buck.

I voted "I don't care" because, honestly, I don't.

That being said, however, you can add my name to the list of people who are absolutely SICK of remakes. Ugh. :whatever:

Loved the movie. But this sounds like something that can be ignored quite easily.

This sounds worse then Jada Pinkett Smiths' metal rock band Wicked Wisdom....

:cmad:

But... he's 9...

I would go see a heartwarming Karate movie starring a talented 9 year old actor... I would. But that's not Karate Kid.

I'll give good odds this movie never gets made, and even money that this is just a speculative rumor.

I certainly wouldnt look forward to it as the original is so entrenched in my memories of growing up in the 80's that to do a remake seems pointless.............................................

except for one thing - maybe they can cast a lead who looks like he actually knows Karate. Macchio literally only looked like an actor who'd been taught a few moves for the movie - kinda like Eric Roberts in Best of the Best only much more obvious (at least they had Roberts actually doing kicks!!)

I liked the fact that Machio didn't know what he was doing. That was the point I thought. Best of the Best was great IMO though it's kind of hard to watch now...Karate Kid will always be fun to watch.

I get what you're saying and I never expected Daniel to kick like Bill Wallace or anything, but even in the later films, Macchio looked awkward. The final fight (if you can even call it that) against Barnes at the end of 3 is painful to watch because of this.

Zabka, Okumoto and Kanan looked far more comptant. In terms of believability, it's hard to believe that Daniel defended, and kept, his title (or beat Chozen) with such a limited repetoire of moves under his (stolen) belt.

I'm just talking about the first film. Why part 2 & 3 were made is beyond me.

Or the 'gem' that was the Next Karate Kid. lol.

But yeah, as you said, there can't possibly be a demand for it, can there?

Although, you never know in this cynical age of pointless hollywood remakes.

Another 80's remake. what is it with remaking 80's films?
