Batman preaches to Rachel in his silly voice "its not who you are underneath, its what you do that defines you".

So, uh, the whole movie was a sham? :wow:

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the movie spend the first half of its running time getting to know the man behind the scowl ?

Cognitive Dissonance anyone? Dave, you didn't think this through. Sorry to say, Nolan, this movie is the sole coarse bump in an otherwise stellar resume.

Uh... how is the movie a sham exactly? I'm not it's biggest fan by far, but what you're saying doesn't make any sense.

Underneath the mask is Bruce Wayne....who to the world is a self centered rich brat who cares about nothing but flamboyantly spending his money on wine women and song....but he doesn't shout to the world that he actually puts his life on the line to go out and fight crime....in other words....it's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you.

I see nothing that looks like a sham here.

Hehe, I think you totally misinterpreted the entire meaning.

Edit: C Lee hit it on the head.:cwink:

But playboy Bruce is an act. Not the Bruce Underneath.

But he's still Batman. It doesn't matter what "Bruce" he is, he's still a masked vigilante who isn't trying to be a celebrity, or looking for money, etc. Hell, he even tells people they don't have to say thank you.

And what are you trying to get at with "cognitive dissonance"? If it was cognitive dissonance, it would be Batman/Bruce seeking justice, but not worried about killing someone, which we all know, is quite the opposite from what was shown to us in BB. So no, it isn't, and I don't really see where you're getting that from the quote.

Cognitive Dissonance:
n. Psychology
A condition of conflict or anxiety resulting from inconsistency between one's beliefs and one's actions, such as opposing the slaughter of animals and eating meat.

"It's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you." = "If you're going to talk the talk, you've got to walk the walk."

It's not who you are underneath
Bruce is a....
(A) Self centered drunken playboy that cares for nothing but satisfying his hedonistic tendancies....the act.
(B) Morose, reclusive, emotionally scarred, unable to commit to a relationship, obsessive, pessimistic, loner....the person.

It's what you do that defines you
He constantly puts his life in danger to fight crime and protect the people of Gotham and the world without wanting or expecting a tickertape parade for his efforts.

So...the reclusive loner wallowing in his own self pity....puts that aside to risk his life to protect strangers.

Before all of that you could put it all into the context of what it was.

He was quoting her own words back to her so that she would know who he is.

That fact alone renders this entire thread moot.

"Better to be quiet and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

Were you trying to quote me, so you could agree/disagree with me, or did you just take the exact words from my post?
