So, I've had a horrible cold the past couple days, and it would be really fantastic if it would just go away. List your favorite cold remedies to help me get better please! :csad:

Dayquil during the day. Motrin for any aches and pains. Vicks on the chest to be able to breathe when you sleep.

Sweat it out. Play an intense competitive sport wearing 20 jumpers. Works for me

Hhahahahah, I like it!

Sweating out is really the best option. Go to bed dressed really warm. You'll feel better in the morning.

My hubby swears that if you eat 3 cloves of garlic daily (real cloves not powder, heated up till they're soft in the microwave) all winter long you won't catch cold.

After you've caught it, you should do the following:

Eat plenty of Chicken Noodle Soup - Canned not powder - the chicken fat is what actually helps cure the cold. They've done studies and it does appear to have some affect. (Apparently Knorr is the most likely to be effective http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/food/chickensoup/ )

Drink lots of Orange Juice - not only will it keep you hydrated but the vitamins help you fight the cold.

Before bed, if you're NOT taking any medications, a hot herbal tea with rum and honey can ease the aches and pains and soothe a scratchy throat

A humidifier at night with menthol in it will also help with the breathing (and Vick's Vapor Rub is definitly a must)

If you have a scratchy throat, rub your neck in with Vick's Vapor Rub, then wrap a scarf or sock around your neck to keep it warm (you can use a safety pin on the sock) The advantage of socks is that they tend not to be as scratchy as scarves and you usually have multiple pairs, so you can easily toss the one you use in the laundry hamper immediately.

I hardly ever get colds, and if I do I just wait it out.

Hmm, I don't know if I could eat that much plain garlic!! :wow:

The rest of it sounds like great advice though, thanks :)

I normally do the same, but I'm feeling pretty miserable.

Another cure for the aches and pains... A Hot Bath with Epsom salts. I always feel better when I'm in a nice HOT bath.

That Zycam stuff really works and will shorten the lifespan of a cold considerably. It comes in a nasal spray, swabs you coat the inside of your nose with and a couple other variants. The swabs, while a bit gross, were the most effective of the lot.

Other than that, lots of rest and lots of fluids. Keep the vitamin C and your multi-vitamins and so forth going. And, don't forget to eat. Colds kill the appetite and make it difficult to eat in spite of not being hungry, but you need the fuel to fight your illness.

Get better soon.

I need to warn you about a product on the market and hopefully you will pass it on to as many people as possible. I felt like I was coming down with a cold last Friday and because I'm around sick family members so much I wanted possibly head it off. I used Zicam, which is a gel nose spray which claims to keep a cold from becoming "full blown." Immediately I had an intense, horrible burning in my nasal/sinus passages. The skin on my face hurt to touch and I had pain and burning so that it hurt to move my head. My husband was here and kept asking if I wanted to go to the ER but the thought of getting in a car was overwhelming. My face was burning hot and my nasal passages were so swollen that I couldn't breathe through my nose and I could see the swelling when I looked in the mirror. It lasted for about three hours and it was Labor Day weekend and I couldn't see a Dr. until Tuesday. I have seen two ENT specialists in the last two days because I have lost, totally lost all ability to taste or smell. They both told me the same thing and suggested an immediate course of action. This is called "chemical trauma' and most times is permanent. I'm going to have a CT scan on Monday and am on a high dose of the steroid, Prednisone for two weeks. If there is even a thread of the olfactory nerve left, it will help to rejuvenate what is left. I have been on the Internet (just put in Zicam) and there are hundreds of people who have had this happen. I am so angry and devastated and saddened right now that I don't know how to get through this. I cannot handle the thought of never tasting food again or trying a new recipe or smelling a Thanksgiving turkey. Cooking has been an absolute passion of mine for as long as I can remember and at the moment I don't see the point of even putting dressing on a salad. I keep thinking that this cannot be happening to me. I suck on a lemon, bite down on a clove of garlic, smell a bottle of ammonia, nail polish remover, anything. I'm starting by telling people I love. PLEASE don't use Zicam, tell your friends.

I think that may be why the "3 garlic cloves a day" works for hubby... ;)

It sounds like a very harsh allergic reaction to me. I've never had this issue with Zicam or even heard of anyone who uses it having it. You could get the same thing from any number of things you put in your body including prescription meds.

Lol I know a girl who was taking Airborne and then noticed that it said on the label "Not Approved by the FDA."

If you've got chest congestion, a lot of nasal drainage and/or phlemmy stuff in the back of your your throat, take Mucinex and take lots of fluids. It will help thin any mucus and keep your chest clear so you don't develop secondary viruses/infections like bronchitis.

it says that because it's nothing but herbal remedies/vitamins/minerals
...any herbal remedy will say the same thing because they're not regulated as a drug by the FDA
