Colin Farrell IS The Penguin

I will say Catwoman should’ve gotten a spin-off announcement first, BUT… I’ll get over it if she’s getting a theatrical film.

Great news, but I feel like they should maybe wait until the film comes out before making these announcements. Just develop the projects in secret for now.

I guess the history of things like the “Dark Universe” and the dozens of announced DC projects that never saw the light of day make me a little apprehensive about putting the horse before the carriage.

I also had Dark Universe in my head while reading this announcement lol

I'm super hyped but I can totally understand that tbh. I mean, you don't really know what the quality of the film is gonna be like until you see it, so it's always scary seeing all these announcements without having seen the movie first. I have a ton of faith that the movie will be great and I trust Matt Reeves, but those past instances still haunt haha.

I guess I'm in the minority that I really don't like the idea of a show about a villain. Not everything needs to be shared universe and not every character should get his own movie/series. One of the main reasons I'm attracted to the Reeves version is because it feels like its own thing. Also, yeah, let's see if the actual movie is any good first.

Could have potential to get some other mobster villains in play.

Black Mask and Ventriloquist, namely.

Idk why anyone thinks the film being good or bad to any individual won’t stop them from making more stuff IF the film is successful. Just seems like confidence in the creative team to me at this point. They also definitely want to create more original **** for Max; we’re just in that stage of entertainment now.

I could see them introducing him walking with a cane, one of his competitors commenting on it, and then him revealing there's a blade in it, and killing them with it. I'd rather it not be a recurring thing, though.

I hope they put a "weird" twist on the Penguin and dont let it be just a mobster, even if its just a subtle one, i want him to see do weird things with birds and having a tragic backstory, that kind of thing, not too extreme but something.
Honestly i am a little tired of the "grounded" approach, it fits Batman and i am not saying to go all out supernatural but i would like them to see lean i little on the weird side of that whole universe, Batman has such a freakish rogue gallery and i feel like we have not seen that explored enough because of that "realistic" approach we got for the last years.
I'm gonna be honest........ Ideally I'd rather a lot of them seem slightly more grounded just because the opposite route makes the genuinely freaky characters like Joker and Professor Pyg feel less special.

Once all the villains are wacky and zany, what does that say about the naturally "weird" villains??

I do agree with the weirdness of the villains. I don’t want Joker as the only weirdo. Penguin doesn’t have to be cartoony but he can be strange. After all he feels like an outsider.

I'm fine with a relatively "grounded" take on the Penguin, but mostly because the Penguin has generally been his best as a character when he *hasn't* been a madman with a bird obsession. "Themed criminal with themed gang doing themed crimes" makes him an interchangeable character without a strong "punch", whereas "The relatively normal and sane crimeboss who keeps himself afloat amidst the madness of Gotham" is a distinct niche.

This doesn't mean he can't like birds as a stylistic conceit, he absolutely could, and even if he's a relative sane crime boss he can and should still be a *flamboyant* crime boss. Likewise, he could certainly have a tricked out umbrella as a signature weapon, with concealed gun barrel and a sword-cane type blade, even if its intended more as a backup defense than a means to personally duke it out with Batman. Just, he should ultimately be a dude who belongs in Blackgate, not Arkham. He's not crazy, he's just a greedy violent sociopath.

Completely unrecognizable. Not just the look but even the voice.
Amazing stuff. I wonder if he'll get some awards, at the very least make up should get some recognition.

This is going to end up being one of, if not Farrell's best performances... Assuming he gets enough to do being that he's not the main villain. He looks and sounds great so far.

That line and the bit at the end solidifies him as a national treasure

I have a feeling his face is going to get banged up and bruised and he's going to look more bird like by the end of it.
