Colin Farrell IS The Penguin

I have a feeling his face is going to get banged up and bruised and he's going to look more bird like by the end of it.

I had a similar thought, that he’ll have some eye injury post car crash in allusion to the monocle.

So...Colin looks like a riot in this. I have a feeling he could steal in the movie in the sense that he looks like he's having the most fun. I wasn't expecting him to channel Robert Deniro, but sure, why not? :funny:

If he takes eye damage they could absolutely give him a monocle. Like... that's a real thing people have. It's not "un-grounded," or whatever.

Think he survives this film and Come back like scarecrow in the nolan films.

After Selina, he probably makes the most sense as a recurring member of the rogues gallery.

That is guaranteed. I'm pretty sure there is a Reeves quote about how these are early versions of Selina and Oswald, who like Bruce have yet to become fully formed who they are later. The clear implication in Matt's quotes is that they are going to be back in that capacity.

Didnt know that. Thanks for the info.

Which begs the question... in this world is the NYC accent a Gotham accent? Did The Penguin move to Gotham after living in NYC? Much to think about.

Not once have I seen a person wear a monocle in real life. I feel like a low level gangster like Penguin wouldn't wear one, unless he's specifically trying to be fancy.

That's exactly why he should wear it. Penguin is always trying to be fancy. He thinks of himself as a high class criminal. Its why he wears it, smokes from a cigarette holder, wears a tux etc. Cobblepot is always trying to elevate himself in class.

I've been playing the Arkham games for so long that I was a bit stunned when he didn't have a British accent, lol.

Would love to see Penguin use trick umbrellas at some point.
Nothing wild like using them to fly.
Umbrellas can be adapted to shoot bullets or release gas.

He has to have a trick umbrella somewhere. They're a staple part of the character. A signature trait. I agree keep them simple. I'd be happy with ones that simply shoots bullets and have a blade come out from the tip.

Gotham definitely shares some cultural and ethnographic affinities with New York and also parts of New Jersey (home of the fictional Sopranos). And as Farrell's take on the accent is distinctly Italian-American, you just have to imagine that Cobblepot grew up in a neighborhood like Bensonhurst, Brooklyn or Ozone Park, Queens. Both are known for their large (Southern) Italian-American populations.

1) I've never seen a Lambo in real life. Doesn't mean a grounded character can't drive one.

2) As The Joker pointed out - "Specifically trying to be fancy" is a massive part of who the Penguin is.

Pretty much. I do love that idea, like here in the first movie he's trusted as a competent & merciless enforcer, but Falcone has no intention of letting this ****er succeed him. The Falcones having been around forever, he's an educated man, a sense of class, all that. Oswald in contrast could have really fought his way up from the slums over the years, the guy's brutal and he knows the gangster world, but Falcone doesn't take him any more seriously than that - effective legbreaker/the family's fist. Dutch Schultz type of thing.

Second movie/other sequels Cobblepot gets his way, he's the man on the throne, starts overcompensating with the bespoke suits and top hats and monocle. I'd be cool if it's not even some eye injury, just plain vanity and unsubstantiated snootiness.

Of course with him still talking like an off-brand DeNiro and beating the **** out of people for the most harmless of slights. Guy can't shake who he is.

Eh, I’m fine if he never wears the monocle. That doesn’t seem to jive with the mob boss thing they’ve got going with him here so probably best not to bother. He looks enough like the character that the monocle and top hat aren’t really necessary.

The difference is, people do drive those cars. But nobody, anywear, wears a monocle. It's not even a matter of it being rarely seen, people just don't wear them anymore.

Colin is too good for HBO Max and that showrunner, I hope he says no. Especially now that he has good projects lined up again.

Colin is in a lot of crap, tbh. It's ok though, I still love him.

Monocle, trick umbrella, and top hat.
Maybe he could wear them on purpose, to lean on the persona, for funsies.
Like Nolans Joker wore the make up intentionally.
