Columbia signs on for 'Preacher' feature

Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to "Preacher," the popular 1990s Vertigo series, for an adaptation to be directed by Sam Mendes.

Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner are producing with Kickstart Prods.' Jason Netter.

Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, "Preacher," which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon.

(Preacher) is finally back on the rails as Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to Preacher, the popular 1990s Vertigo series, for an adaptation to be directed by Sam Mendes. I would have loved to see this as an HBO series, but at this point I'm willing to take it in any form I can. Read on for the skinny.

Columbia has picked up the rights to the excellent maxi-series, which is about a preacher who has the Word of God in him (he can make you do anything he tells you to do), his hit man girlfriend and his vampire best friend as they search for the Lord, who has vacated his seat in Heaven and abandoned his Creation. It's pretty hardcore, occasionally blasphemous stuff. Oh, and the ghost of John Wayne is an occasional guest star.

The good news, I guess, is that Preacher is moving forward in a major way. The previous movie version had a budget of like 25 million, while this will surely be a major motion picture with lots of money thrown at it. It was also previously a potential HBO show.

The bad news is that Preacher is moving forward in a major way. I just don't see a movie version doing justice to the sprawling narrative that Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon created. Sure, it's adaptable, either as a single film or a series, but I fail to see the point. This is a point I'm willing (and hope) to cede in the future as more news about this project comes to light.

The worst news is that Preacher is moving forward with Sam Mendes in charge. First off, I don't much like Mendes' films - they're second tier Oscar bait, glossy and forgettable. Preacher is like a David Allan Coe song writ large, and I don't think Mendes has the vulgarity to properly adapt a work that features a man who ****s a woman made out of meat products.

That said, I do like the idea of a Brit handling the film. Preacher is, at it's heart, an outsider's fantasy version of the US, and having a non-American direct makes sense. But I'd rather it be someone like Matthew Vaughn who, even with Kick-Ass in production, is still looking at more comic book projects. He has the grit and vulgarity to make this work.

Shane..? That should be fun :woot:

He doesnt have the looks to be Jesse but if they could "dirty" up Jared Padalecki, he would be ok and he is from San Antonio . I think Jason Flemyng would be a good Cassidy, but another would be Tommy Flanagan, he has that beat up, worn out look to him.

Looks arnt everything. Beside his hairline, which is fixable. He looks enough like Jesse. Everything else is the performance. The guy is badass and ill-tempered to a "T." Hes actually southern but its not thick so its not annoyingly drawl. The most recent seasons of the Shield have had his most exceptional performances.

It wouldn't surprise me if Leonardo Dicaprio is approached for the lead. Worked with Mendes, can do a more than reputable accent (see The Aviator), and he likes to work against his looks in the parts he chooses.

They'll need someone with balls. Its quite a controversial story.

Not to say Leo doesnt but there'll have to be someone whos not afraid of controversy

Thank god Hollywood is run by Jews, I doubt Christians would ever let it see the light of day ;) jkjk

Di Caprio has enough balls to make a documentary on global warming. Ahem.

global warmings not that controversial in Hollywood. Religions much touchier (too touchy most would say I would think)

^ It was just a silly remark (like most of the things I say :o)

Sam Mendes to direct 'Preacher'

Sam Mendes will direct a bigscreen adaptation of the supernatural graphic novel "Preacher" for Columbia Pictures.

Created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, graphic novel focuses on the preacher of a Texas town, who is struggling to get by and is driven only by his strong moral sense. When the city is decimated by an otherworldly force, he embarks on a journey across the country to take on the evil.

Supernatural project is a departure for Mendes, who is best known for tackling suburban angst in such films as "American Beauty" and the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet starrer "Revolutionary Road."

But Mendes isn’t new to the world of comicbooks: His drama "Road to Perdition" was also adapted from a graphic novel.

Neal Moritz ("I Am Legend") is producing through his Sony-based Original Film banner alongside Kickstart Prods.’ Jason Netter ("Wanted"). Ken Levin and Ori Marmur exec produce.

Columbia is also developing another Ennis comicbook, "The Boys," which Moritz and Netter are producing together.

The 75-issue "Preacher" series, which ran from 1995-2000, has been lauded with numerous kudos, including four Eisner Awards.

I'd love to see Adrian Pasdar play Jesse. But he may be a little too old now.

Jeffrey Donovan(Burn Notice,Changeling) wouldn't be a bad choice for jesse

I think Timothy Olyphant could make a great Jesse Custer.
