Hi All, I've always been a long time fan of the superhero genre (especially with all the comic book animated series' and the movies), but I just got my first comic book yesterday. I told the guy at the store that I was interested in the Civil War thing, so he pointed me to The New Avengers: Breakout book to kind of set the stage for Civil War. I just finished it (I liked it a lot). Is there more to the story or does the Civil War happen right after this? And also, are the "Frontline" books a necessity for the Civil War story? Are the "Road to Civil War" books a necessity?

Sorry if I'm confusing anyone.
Thanks.

Yes buy them. Get avengers disassembled but, pass completely on House of M(terrible). There.

yes, a couple of things have happened in between Break-out anc Civil war, but you can skip over it if you want. There's a billion things out there to read, you'll get around to everything you're interested in soon enough, there's no rush to get the things from inbetween Break Out and Civil War

The only thing that's out right now that you should probably pick up are Civil War #1, and New Avengers: The Illuminati special. The "Road to Civil War" books ARE NOT NECESSARY. They're just there if you want some more depth to the story, but you'll be 100% AOK if you skip them all. Never get suckered into thinking you need to get every book that ties into a comic event.

But you also may wanna pick up this and next month's Amazing Spider-Man....

Civil War: Frontline is not necessary to read, it's just there if you're enjoying the story and want some more depth to it. I would say if you're going to read ANY Civil War tie-in, this is the book you should look into first.

I'd also recomend the Young Avengers/Runaways miniseries which ties to Civil War. These are the two newest Marvel superhero teams, and their books have just been fantastic, and this is the first time the two groups of teams are meeting up, it should be a blast.

we also have an Official Recommendations Thread here which should show you some awesome books you may wanna look at

what hereos are you interested in?
i'm also only new to marvel, and Civil War #1 was great.

i've been liking the recent amazing Spiderman title.
Front Line was ok, not as good as Civil War but still a good solid enjoyable read.

He recommended Spider-Man: Breakout as a stepping stone to Civil War!? Seems an odd choice to me.

Noobie to this forum so Hello all!!

I found that Bendis' final volumes of Daredevil quite pertinent to Civil war!! wat with his revealing of his true identity and all.. Plus his whole run on the book a must for new readers.

um, Daredevil doesn't have anything to do with civil war

although BMB's DD is fantastic

If you liked Breakout, I cannot recommend the rest of the New Avengers trades highly enough. It's easily one of my favorite series (although it gets a lot of flack on this forum).

I was gonna say Marc, i think the new New Avengers so far, (although most of them don't relate to Civil War directly), are sort of important in terms of character setup, showing people the nature of the new team, etc.

if Goofball isn't too familiar with all the characters, it might help explain people such as Sentry and Spider-Woman, who no doubt will feature in the Civil War stories.

ps. also, I'd recommend the most recent three issues of Amazing Spider-Man. really good little story, explains all you need to know about Civil War, and gives you a lot of character info on Tony Stark and Peter Parker (as well as showing us what Spider-Man's new suit can do)

Yeah, I misread it. It works then.

can't agree more, i love the suit, the story is interesting, and the inclusion of Tony is great
loving amazing Spider-Man at the moment.

Thank you all for your help. But I just have one more question.... what is it about House of M that some of you don't like (without giving away any spoilers please)? Is it the writing/illustrations, or the actual story??

I thought the spiderman house of M was pretty cool

the art was gorgeous, there's no questioning that. The dislike of the story comes from several factors:

It was overhyped. It was not necessarily a bad little story, but hearing from Marvel it was more like "DON'T MISS... THE HOUSE OF M! THE SUMMER'S BIGGEST[/M] EVENT! BE THERE!" and it completely didn't meet that hype. The author also refered to one event of the series as "the page that will crack the internet in half", and then when we all read it (it was Hawkeye's return) we were all like "::shrug:: ok, so you brought back a dead character you killed off less than a year ago, that the moment he died we all said "he'll be back." That's not shocking, that's exactly what we expected."

Second, it had similarities to an X-Men event from about ten years ago called the Age of Apocalypse, but that event was 1,000 times better and more interesting.

As for the actual writing, Brian Michael Bendis' dialogue style irritates many people. I like his writing, but it ven gets on my nerves sometimes.
