To BalthusDire:

No, he's not black. He's Hawaiian-German-Irish.

In the books, Robert E. Howard describes Conan as "copper-skinned".

Yeah, the director is what I'm most concerned about. I think he'll just give us another Pathfinder lookalike.

Well, I guess we'll see if Marcus Nispel can prove to be a director with a larger scope just as Zack Snyder proved with 300 and Watchmen, and Louis Letterier with The Incredible Hulk and very likely with Clash of The Titans. Here's hoping he learned from the flaws of Pathfinder.

Eh, but Snyder can balance style and also handle substance. Mind you, he needs tweaking, but he's certainly at a better place than where Nispel is.

It was "bronze-skinned", as in tanned. "Burned brown by the sun." Conan's still a caucasian character.

Without dreadlocks, Mamoa looks very caucasian for the most part.

For the type of film it was, I think Nispel handled substance fine in Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Geez, you white guys and your "everybody cool is white" shtick. :cmad:

LOL!!:woot: Whoa, now!! I was affraid a response like that one would eventually come up. I'm actually ethnic myself.

to be honest, i wouldn't mind if Conan looked more exotic

Jason as Conan:

Looks perfect! I understand when it comes to Captain America or Batman, that the actor for those roles should be more caucasian, but I don't think it applies to Conan. Specially in this case, with Jason Momoa. I don't get why it's such a big problem to some. It's not like he's "all black". He looks just like any other caucasian f***er with a tan. What is the problem?

Jason as Conan:

Spot on....
From the photos I've seen he does need to get a bit bigger.... not bulky....ripped. The photos I've seen of him remind of a swimmer's build he needs to train towards a "savage" look.

From what I understand, Cimmerians were based on the old school Celts and the way Conan was described, he could have been Tarzan's twin brother. A bronzed giant with black hair and serious gray eyes.

In a way, a white Conan makes more sense than a white Superman. And a LOT more sense than a white Goku. Still, I applaud them for picking a leading man with a more exotic look to him.

Well, it's not like they cast Djimon Hounsou, and this guy has a good "Handsome Barbarian" look to him.

Man, this is so stupid on so many levels.

As others have no doubt pointed out, if, say, they made of movie about T'Challa the Black Panther, or Shang Chi, or something & cast a white guy, the din of accusation towards racist Follywood would be deafening.

It's the same thing here, but we have a Hawaain being cast as Conan the Cimmerian. What was it Paul Mooney said? Something like "Hollywood is ******ed. I got a movie for ya....Tom Hanks IS..."The Last N!@@#r on Earth'"

Conan's a white guy. A white guy with black hair, blue eyes, and a tan. It's spelled out in every story. He has an Irish/Gaelic name. He's a Cimmerian. In fact, Conan's like the Official Cimmerian Representative. His ethnicity is an important part of the character & how he relates to his world.

But don't take my word for it:

"They came into these countries as Aryans. But there were variations among these primitive Aryans, some of which are still recognized today, others which have long been forgotten. The blond Achaians, Gauls and Britons, for instance, were descendants of pure-blooded AEsir. The Nemedians of Irish legendry were the Nemedian AEsir. The Danes were descendants of pure-blooded Vanir; the Goths--ancestors of the other Scandinavian and Germanic tribes, including the Anglo-Saxons--were descendants of a mixed race whose elements contained Vanir, AEsir and Cimmerian strains. The Gaels, ancestors of the Irish and Highland Scotch, descended from pure-blooded Cimmerian clans. The Cymric tribes of Britain were a mixed Nordic-Cimmerian race which preceded the purely Nordic Britons into the isles, and thus gave rise to a legend of Gaelic priority. The Cimbri who fought Rome were of the same blood, as well as the Gimmerai of the Assyrians and Grecians, and Gomer of the Hebrews. Other clans of the Cimmerians adventured east of the drying inland sea, and a few centuries later mixed with Hyrkanian blood, returned westward as Scythians. The original ancestors of the Gaels gave their name to modern Crimea."
Robert E. Howard - The Hyborian Age

Casting this Momoa guy as Conan the Cimmerian is yet another indication that the people in charge of this movie don't give 2 $h!ts about Robert E. Howard or anything he wrote. It's just more of the same. They changed his origin, they changed the basic geography of Conan's world for no reason, they changed Conan's basic personality, so I guess why not cast a lanky prettyboy Pacific Islander to play a Cimmerian.

I bet these guys have a picture of Robert E. Howard in their office that they throw darts at and spit on while they're coming up with this stuff.

^Take away his dreads and I'll bet he'll just look like a white guy with a tan.

This whole debate reminds me of the "Jake Gyllenhaal as the POP" controversy.

Not really.

The dude is a handsome fella, there's no question about that.

But he's not mean-looking.

Not scary, or dangerous looking.

And he's clearly not Gaelic-looking. At all.

Nephron, I think you're being too obsesive with details. Believe me, I've read most of the Howard-Conan books. At least wait until you see an official picture of him as Conan, and then by all means give him hell if he does not meet your expectations. Seriously!!
