My buds and I were yakking about what team names just sound cool.

My top 5...

1. Colorado Avalanche
2. Miami Heat
3. Orlando Magic
4. Minnesota Wild
5. Arizona Diamondbacks

MSU Spartans
Atlanta Falcons
Orlando Magic
Dallas Mavericks

I love all those names the most

The South Carolina Gamecock s. It just reeks of masculinity.

Dallas Mavericks
New York Yankees (Damn Yankees works on so many levels)
Toledo MudHens
Detroit Pistons
Arizona Sun Devils
Seminoles
CMU Chippewas (Shortens to Chips nicely)
Knickerbockers

Orlando Magic
Toledo Mudhens
Macon Whoopee (minor-league hockey; say it out loud for the full effect :woot:)

New Orleans Jazz is the best name in professional sports. RIP. :csad::up:

Lakers
Cowboys
Mavericks
Titans
Raiders
Celtics

Some bad names

Redskins
Packers

Yeah I never understood Packers? Is Green Bay known for packing?

Redskins is down right offensive. It's like having the N word on a helmet.

But about the thread :
Here in LV we have the 51's always liked that.
Houston Astros
Minnesota Vikings
Minnersota Twins

Chicago Bears (Daaaaaa Bears)
Alabama Crimson Tide
New York Yankees
Chicago Blackhawks (also the coolest uniforms in NHL)
Minnesota North Stars

I never felt DRAWN to a particular name. I'm still waiting for sports to go completely corporate and do away with city affiliations:

EXAMPLES:

The Microsoft Mavericks
The Ford Lions
The Pepsi Avalanche
The Taco Bell Chiauaha's

If my idea comes to fruition sports teams would no longer be based out of a city. They would become a traveling show of sorts.

One day, fans in Nashville see Pepsi Avalanche vs. Coca-Cola Red Wings. The next day they see Prudential Capitals vs. Sunkist Stars.

The Packers are named after a packing company. The Indian Packing Company, who had financially backed the team. They were called the Indians at first, later changed it to the Packers.

And yeah the Redskins have to change that name, but it probably won't happen. I know a lot of people don't really see it as one, but that is basically a racial slur being used as a nickname.

as an opposite, what's up with the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricanes? When is the last time a hurricane hit Oklahoma?

Hurricanes
Heat
Los Spurs :cwink:

I agree with Ben... the Jazz shoulda changed their name when they moved :csad:

I don't know if that will happen, you need the hometown support/identity and build rivalries.

Red Bull New York or New York Red Bulls from MLS seems like something more likely to happen. Or the incorporation of a company/product logo into the team's logo.

Texas Rangers
Dallas Cowboys
South Carolina Game*****
Milwaukee Brewers
North Carolina Tarheels

:thing: :doom: :thing:

Oh yeah I just remembered....

Montreal Canadians. LoL. Thats like having a team named The Las Vegas Americans.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Kings
St Louis Rams

san jose sharks
san francisco 49ers

It's not Canadians. It's Canadiens. It's the French name for what they consider the first French settlers to Canada (welll that's the implication). That's why the team's nickname is the Habs. It stands for Les Habitants.

And I like thier name. Any team with names that actually have historical significance I always like. The Blackhawks, The Ravens, etc, I think all are great names.

Oh. Well I just got schooled in Canada History. So that's what the H stands for. Thanks for clearing it up :)

Given the pirate activity the bay area has had in it's history, I've always thought that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a great name for a team here.
Though their original unis left something to be desired. :o

And seeing as how it's one of the lightning capitals on the planet, the Tampa Bay Lightning is a good name too.

And, like others, I'm a big fan of the Orlando Magic. One of the best names in sports.

A badminton team from new zealand called, Black C0cks
