25-year-old faces charges in N.Y. after crash leaves woman hospitalized

LOCKPORT, N.Y. - Police say a western New York tow truck driver was texting on one cell phone while talking on another when he slammed into a car and crashed into a swimming pool.

Niagara County sheriff's deputies say 25-year-old Nicholas Sparks of Burt admitted he was texting and talking when his flatbed truck hit the car Wednesday morning in Lockport, which is outside Buffalo.

The truck then crashed through a fence and sideswiped a house before rolling into an in-ground pool.

Police say the 68-year-old woman driving the car suffered head injuries and was in good condition. Her 8-year-old niece suffered minor injuries.

Sparks was charged with reckless driving, talking on a cell phone and following too closely. It couldn't be determined Thursday whether he has a lawyer.

I think driving while texting and talking on cell at the same time is as dangerous as DUI.

It's time to get rid of cell phones.....back to the dark ages of land lines

It should be an instant loss of driving priviledge for any ass**** who gets caught texting while they drive. :cmad:

Yes, after getting my ****ing car towed yesterday, divine retribution.

Nicholas Sparks... The ****** romance novelist?

There was this study I read in some auto magazine and texting while driving either impairs you as much as when you're legally intoxicated or slightly less.

Either way, texting or talking on a cell phone while driving should be illegal.

It is in NY state, which is where this happened.........*******s still do it

Texting AND talking on another phone? Holy crap. The guy is a tow truck driver! What super important events in his life were going on that he HAD to text someone, be TALKING to someone, and keep driving?

That's just like this nineteen year old girl here in Pittsburgh who was texting on her phone while going like 90 on the parkway and crashed into this other car and killed the people inside. They only sentenced her to 36 months in prison for it and people are freaking out. :o

What about eating while driving, dirving soda while drinking, smoking a cigarette, changing the radio, using a GPS?

You can still watch the road while doing any of those. Texting by its very nature involves not paying attention to the world around you, whether driving or walking down the street.

If you can't do those first 4 without looking at the road, then there's something wrong with you.

GPS are quite possibly the most useless and unnecessary things in cars now and are probably just as dangerous as texting. It's just in a place that it's easy to see the road still.

A cell phone in both hands is just ******ation

Driving a soda while drinking? :).

It's entirely possible to text and drive safely, just as it's possible to talk on the phone and drive, eat and drive, tuning the radio while driving, etc, etc, etc.

The issue isn't driving and texting. The issue is stupid people doing it, I.E, talking on one phone and texting on another in a manner that causes you not to watch the road or hold onto the wheel of the car. Stupid people has always been the issue.

Now watching where you're going is not watching where you're going.

Was he trying to text his new sappy crappy book to someone or what...?

BULL.

When you are driving you have to be alert to what's going on around you AT ALL TIMES. When you are typing little messages on a screen, that is what you are focused on.

Put the damn toys away if you are driving!!! :cmad:

Cleveland passed a law to fine anyone texting while driving. They really should make in nationwide now, I heard texting while driving is more dangerous then being drunk :wow:

Based on what? Are human beings not intelligent enough to both keep an eye on the road and hit a few little buttons? Odd, many of us have been doing it for years. I prefer to text while stopped, but it's possible to do it while driving and still keep an eye on the road.

Want to try that again?

You need to keep both eyes on the road.

?

I'm sure you know that it is a figure of speech.

keep an eye on: to watch someone or something; to monitor someone or something closely.

Yes. You shouldn't be texting while driving though. It's stupid. You're life isn't so important that you need to do it while driving. Why should other people be put in danger just so you can reply "ROLF" to your friend?

And no, human beings aren't intelligent enough.

Why!? What the hell is so important that can't wait until you get out of a moving vehicle? Seriously!
