Costume.

I really liked the suit. It didn't bother me it was CGI, I thought it was creative to have light coursing through and making it look alive. It was pretty faithful to the comic book except white gloves but I think it worked fine.

i thought it was cool how it has like a E.T. style heart light that formed the white of the symbol

I loved the suit but that mask ah man that was the wrong decision. It looked awful everytime it was on his face.

The suit actually looked pretty awesome in the context of projected film.
I liked it and the whole approach alot.

However I still think it could have been handled differently.

Does anyone know how much the actual suit CGI cost?

I'm wondering that myself and thinking if it would have been more cheaper for them to have created a real suit, added by 'some' cgi touch ups instead.

I agree that making it 100% CGI was just a bad move. They wasted a lot of money and in the end the mask still looks goofy and the point where Ryan Reynold's neck meets the suit still looks extremely fake. If you're spending that much money on a CGI suit, it should look stellar and extremely convincing. Not passable at best. It's kind of ridiculous because they could have saved money and made it look even better then the final result we got. It would have looked more believable and they still could have augmented it with CGI to keep that alien look.

I thought the close up shot on Oa when he was speaking to Tomar-Re looked good.

I loved the suit in the film, and felt that going with CGi was the right choice. It made it that little bit more alien, and helped sell the concept that it's completely generated by the ring and composed of energy. The energy 'ripples' going through it (particularly when he's at the sun) were great.

The mask though ............................... it didn't work for me. Something about how it blended to his face just felt off. I felt they should have used a real mask for those scenes, even if the appearance of said mask was handled by CGi.

It's irrelevant whether it was good or not. The fact of the matter is that it took up way too much of the budget. We could have had a lot more Oa if the suit was practical.

I think the suit looked good, but I do have to wonder why it couldn't have been a mixture of CG and practical. When he's going full force with power, sure, but when he's at rest, it could've worked just as well as an augmented real costume. Seems like that would've been more cost effective too.

And for the record, I'm not even remotely an anti-CG kind of guy. More often than not, I find myself defending it. I adore CG as a tool that can do things that practical just can't.

saw the movie and liked it

also the costume look fine to me and i like the yellow power ring

After the seeing the film, I did ultimately think the costume looked pretty good on screen. I also wondered why the heck they couldn't have pulled it off with an actual practical suit with CG effects. So much effort and money to achieve realism that could have been achieved quicker and easier with an actual real suit. The desire for everything to be CGI in modern films is really just too much.

I think they went for cgi because the literally wanted it to be a second skin

notice that carol asked "why is your skin green"

the only way to get a skin suit like the cgi one would be to paint his body, like I said before Hal might customize his suit to look different in the second one after he masters his power, notice sinestros suit didn't look like skin or even natural it was very geometric

Hal could just be wearing a default suit designed by the ring and not his own willpower

That line just doesn't make sense to me. The suit didn't look like a second skin, it looked like you ripped his skin off and saw muscle fibers. That seems like a throwaway line just to emphasize the CG element of the costume, he may as well have said "Hey I'm not wearing a suit! This is totally a second skin! Can you tell it's not a real suit?"

It looked fine but really seems like a waste of good money. They also managed to make him as anatomically correct as a Ken doll

again it may look more fabric like in the next one so they can use a tangible suit

I really liked the look of the cgi suit, the end product of the suit looked fantastic in the film. So did the cgi suits of the other GL Corps.

While the mask didn't bother me the way it seems to most other people, i am curious how it would have looked had he had a practical mask, augmented by fx. The cgi mask allowed the mask to contour to his facial expressions, I wonder how a pliable practical mask would have looked to achieve the same effect.

Anyway, I'm very happy with how the cgi suit turned out, it looked great and I'm glad they went the route they did with it.

I was totally fine with the idea of a CG suit up until I actually saw the movie. Now I completely agree. I don't mind the mask, I like that it can move with his face, but the suit would look about the same and be easier on the budget. They could do it very similar to Tron Legacy, where the actor's body gets scanned, and the suit is an exact fit, and given some lights(only this would have to be much quieter).

I'll tell you guys, I am loving the ring designs so far in the movie both the green and yellow rings

the yellow one looks like it's made out of black titanium and gold bismuth

I think I may be in the minority here but I think he should just be maskless period. The mask looked stupid with cg and I think it would look stupid practical. I dont think it works either way. He looked good in Oa with no mask.

I think I would've like to have seen the mask not show his eyes at all. Be whited out like in the comics or cartoons. And only have it become slightly transparent to show his eyes muted in color during certain scenes or when its a super close up shot. But from afar I like to have it be completely white. Not sure if anyone else agrees.

Reynolds would've really had to emote with his face to get across what his eyes couldn't show if they went that route.

The cgi costume was amazing it was constantly coursing with energy and changing and just seemed alive. It would have been impossible to have done this with practical effects. And honestly I thought the mask was pretty comic accurate, dont understand all the hate. Overall I thought it was one of the better things about the film, and that really applies to all the art direction. This movie failed becuz it had a terrible script, feel sorry for all the artists that worked so hard to have it squandered by ****** writers and dumb studio execs.

Yep, I'm starting to feel the same way. Mostly because he was the only GL with a mask. Maybe if Sinestro, Tomar and one or two others had had masks on it wouldn't have looked out of place. The whole "disguise your identity" part was silly and even laughed at in the film itself. If the costume was going to disguise his identity then it would have covered his whole face

I liked the suit, it looked great. But it didn't look like anything that couldn't be done with a practical costume and augmented CG. If they were pinching pennies for their CG work, pouring all that money into the costume was a silly way to go.

I think it would've been easier with a pratical suit, just have an actual suit enhanced with CGI. They would've saved a lot of money or spent it towards other things, such as more Oa.
