Costume.

If we're gonna go there I'm more curious as to how he hides the boots of his suit. Those things do not fit into his loafers. I mean unless he stores them somewhere and rapidly changes into them when changing everything else.

For that matter, what the hell happens to his civilian clothes? Are people always finding clothes littered all over Metropolis?

You can analyse these characters for about 10 minutes and realise that they don't make any sense, but why would you want to do that?

Comics are a visual medium and superheroes have such a unique aesthetic (that Superman created) that yes, changing the way they look changes the character.

So getting rid of underwear and adding an inch and a half to his collar fundamentally changes who the character is?

Yeah, whatever.

It doesn't change his personality but it changes the character. Santa Claus doesn't give out presents because he wears red and white clothes but if you take them away you change him.

I was surprised Green Lantern's girl friend recognized him. No one recognized Superman without his glasses!

Technically, yeah it's a change, but I still think people are making way too big a deal about freakin' underwear. It still looks like Superman to me and no one on the face of the planet whose even barely familiar with the character is going to go "whose that?"

I didn't claim that the new design makes him unrecognisable.

They will ask where the underwear went, though.

Anecdote: When the new design hit, I flipped my laptop around to my girl and said "look." She said "yeah, that's Superman. Why are you showing me this?" Didn't even notice the lack of undies. To her, it was just plain old Superman. I didn't even notice the collar until I saw fanboys making a huge deal about it. I really think some of you are over estimating just how much your average joe cares about underpants.

I didn't even notice the collar till someone mentioned it in this thread lol And I've published two articles about it in the past week

All I really noticed was the Jim Lee trademark armor look all the JLAers now have

In most of Europe he isn't even called Santa and looks VERY different from the commercialized American incarnation. Doesn't change his popularity or identification.

Now, if you made Superman blond, olive skinned and took away the 'S' then I'd see the "drastic" changes people keep referring to

Energy Superman? Drastic.

No undies and a higher collar? Minor tweaks.

I liked it too when Hal was trying to deepen his voice to sound more "heroic-ky".

Is it me but does Ryan Reynolds have a big noggin'?

I did not notice a large noggin, but I keep thinking about him in the Chipmonk movie! I think they could have picked someone better.

Speaking of masks, I read a fabulous book called Super Born: Seduction of Being. You guys might like it. But anyway, the lady has a black mask, black outfit including a cape. Is that sexier on a lady than a guy wearing the usual outfit?

Well that isn't the case in the part of Europe where I live.

He used to be more commonly known in the UK as 'Father Christmas' but now both names are used, with 'Santa Claus' becoming more and more common.

Our cans of Coca Cola have him on them around Christmas time.

I have a hard time believing that the same Americanised version hasn't been adopted in most of Europe, outside of particular Christmas customs relevant to each country.

what I noticed, was that because the CG suit was like a second skin (almost in replace of his skin) that it made his body look kinda skinnier (then it would if he was fully clothed) he is by no means was a skinny guy, but, still... especially around the neck area, the collar it was a bit distracting

wait, who...?

no one from this movie was in the Chipmonk movie's

Of those two alternate versions of the Hal suit... the more traditional looking one is pretty cool. The other one though looks more like something a racecar driver would wear.

Personally, I much prefer the version we got in the movie as opposed to the alternate Hal concept designs.

My bad! It was Jason Lee that I was thinking of. Thanks for putting me straight!
