DC Animation Creature Commandos - Animated Series

Animation looks like garbage. I’ll probably like it because I’m a sucker for this style of superhero story and a big Gunn fan but it’s considerably uglier than most of its peers. Big Tomorrowverse energy.

I expected it to be a little different, but it still seems more flexible and consistent in its fluidity than the Tomorrow-verse...
Or maybe I'm just being chauvinistic because my compatriots from the Bobypills animation studio are directing. 😅

Otherwise, I found the trailer sympathic. On paper, it's obvious that the concept is more than similar to Suicide Squad (duh!) but I was expecting a different atmosphere...
That said, I also understand that the trailer's strategy may be to deliberately evoke Gunn's film to help the general public to place the project.
And it does that job just fine.

The animation is fine. You can see fluidity in the characters when they actually move. Looks better than any Tomorrowverse (horrible naming conventions we got going on) clip I’ve seen.

Thus the new era of DC begins. Teaser looked fine to me, even though Gunn's humor is very hit and miss for me. Still, I'll check it out.

Yeah, I think the animation looks pretty good, but I had hoped that the characters would resemble their real-life counterparts a little more. That's just a nitpick, though, and I suppose it makes more sense to sketch in a fairly generic manner in the event you need to recast. Easier too.

The animation looks waaaaay better, more polished and more ambitious than anything that DC has put out in the last 10 years easily.
It looks immeasurably worse than MAWS or Caped Crusader. Even a less technically well animated show compared to those two like Harley Quinn is way more visually appealing. It’s not the ugliest looking show ever but it looks dull, flat and low end.

I don't know if I'd personally go that far. My only complaint is that some of the movement feels....janky. Otherwise I like the look of it.

I think it's the opposite. To me it's really obvious it has a higher budget per episode than those.

This has an extremely obvious style with its own charm to it. Really don't understand your perspective on this at all. It doesn't look like any other show out there.
I just don’t see it. It just looks like a generic action show in its aesthetic and as much as I love most of Gunn’s work it’s a reminder that I really don’t need his particular style more than once every several years or it kind of loses its luster and feels repetitive.

So I went to find gifs to compare MAWS, Caped Crusader, and Creature Commandos, but the only thing I could find for Creature Commandos on tumblr were the character cards. If your animation doesn't capture tumblr, you've already lost. :o

Beyond the writing and character work that makes MAWS stand out, it's animated by the crew that did Korra. And it shows. They of course nail the big bombastic moments, but they really kill it when it comes to characters, whether it's the comedy or the quieter moments.

Will need to see the two other shows in full to really judge them, but Caped looks far better then Creature Commando so far, that screams "on a budget". And if it's not, they made a poor choice of studios.

MAWS also just has an inherently appealing hook to it with the Sailor Moon inspo and all this has is ‘Yeah it’s TSS and Peacemaker but a cartoon.’
It was really inspired to go the anime route with MAWS. I didn't know how much I needed it until I got it. Caped Crusader has the time period to spice up the usual Batman fare. And great creative.

Creature Commandos might be good. Have no idea yet. But yeah, I don't see a hook.

So did Gunn make this into a cartoon because doing Dr. Phosphorous on a streaming show budget would look CW Arrowverse-ish? I can't think of any other reason.

Fun fact, the animation, studio that animated this intro…

…is the same company animating this show. So, yeah.

I think we’re getting into the weeds of “animation” versus “art style”.

MAWS, while it’s the animation at times definitely lacks a certain level of fluidity and less frames than some other shows, is more than made up for with its expressive and dynamic level of quirky and charming anime style character design. Creature Commandos, from the little snippets of animation that we get in the trailer, definitely seems to have a level of fluidity to its animation that MAWS doesn’t have, though I can also see why the art style would be a turn off to some people (though, I really don’t get the comparison to the Tomorrowverse style). Again, it’s only short little clips, so it’s not much to go off of.

Maybe once we get another trailer a little bit later down the line that shows off much more of the animation, much more of a proper and fair comparison could probably be made.

Who animates MAWS, the show? Not the intro. The show. And who would sign off on character designs and art in general?

I'm not sure why you're arguing this is "getting into the weeds". People are simply saying they think it doesn't look good. The animation style screams Tomorrowverse, because of the thick, inky line work.

I'm not sure what you mean by fluidity. I just watched the trailer again and it does not have a lot of fluidity to the animation.

Calling this garbage while calling My Adventures with Superman "interesting looking" is bananas.

Superman in the style of magical girl anime is so many leagues more interesting than this I don’t even know how to quantify it.
