Drama Damon Lindelof Developing The Leftovers at HBO

Yeah that was something organized on The Leftovers subreddit. I highly recommend checking it out too. There are some great insights by fans to the symbolism used throughout the show and some other great theories.

Lindelof and Theroux have both admitted to lurking there from time to time.

I cried at the last scene.

There really are no words to express how amazing this show is. I need to rewatch the season & process this. It was a work of art.

Incredible finale. This was an excellent season.

The finale was the highest rated and most watched episode of the season. 993,000 viewers.

Please, HBO... I NEED SEASON 3!

They really nailed this scene. Absolutely remarkable. 10/10

I would be a little bummed if The Leftovers doesn't get some kind of awards recognition this year.

Carrie Coon was definitely left out in the cold last season. Theroux absolutely deserves a nomination this year.

YESSS!!!!!

HBO has renewed The Leftovers for a third and final season, HBO announced.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind THE LEFTOVERS for its third and final season,” said Lombardo. “This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon’s artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season.”

“I have never, ever experienced the level of creative support and trust that I have received from HBO during the last two seasons of THE LEFTOVERS,” says Damon Lindelof. “Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring THE LEFTOVERS to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be.

“On behalf of our incredible crew and superb cast, we are all tremendously grateful that HBO is giving us an opportunity to conclude the show on our own terms…an opportunity like this one rarely comes along, and we have every intention of living up to it. One more thing. We are blessed by the unwavering support of our fans and the incredibly powerful voice of the critical community. We feel absolutely privileged to heat up one last helping of leftovers.”

Yes!

Somewhat bittersweet news of it being the final season but much better than cancellation

I was thinking to myself the other day that one more season would be a good caper for the series. I respect Lindeloff's decision to go out on a high note.

Hell yeah, sad it's the end as well but at least Lindelof/Perrotta will get to 'finish' it.

Yeah I was hoping this would go on until the perfect 5 season run but I'm glad they are going out on their terms and have an idea already on how they can finish this building off that stellar ending to Season 2.

UPDATE: I was able to get ahold of Lindelof to ask him a couple of questions about the renewal, first about how difficult it was to persuade HBO to keep the show going.

"I'm in Jersey helping my mom move," he said. "I was afraid I'd have to sing for my supper when I got back to L.A next week... I didn't. Mike Lombardo called with the good news and it was a done deal."

And why is Lindelof — who previously had to push ABC to end "Lost" much earlier than the executives there wanted him and Carlton Cuse to — ready for the third season to be the last? (In the press release announcing renewal, he wrote that the end would be definitive, "And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be.")

"It's a gut instinct," he said. "I feel like there's more story, but not MUCH more. And I don't want to drag it out unnecessarily. Lots of fans and critics understandably had a sense that we could have ended after season two... That was a strong indication we were closer to the end than the beginning."

Glad we are getting season 3. This show has been, as Lorne Malvo would say, "Aces."

I first started The Leftovers over the summer, and its inconsistent S1 caused me to drop it and start GoT or whatever other show I did end up watching at the time.

The positive word of mouth made me want to start S2 again, so near the end of the fall I started to gradually get back into The Leftovers, and over the holidays, I binged S2. I didn't think The Leftovers was a binging kinda show, but the astronomical improvement shown in S2 made it much easier to swallow.

What a season S2 was. Lindelof's writing and Mimi Leder's directing was firing on all cylinders, and Theroux is just towering. Towering in a cast that has gotten incredible performances from Carrie Coon and Regina King and has the consistent hand of Christopher Eccleston. I wish I had watched it in real time so I could talk about it with everyone here.

International Assassin and Lens were the highlights of the season to me. I knew Lindelof was going to have an episode where he ventured into limbo or whatever. It seemed natural that they would explore a character through an extended dream sequence such as that, but it was such a fitting end for Patti. Theroux needs an Emmy for that ep.

Such a dramatic improvement from S1 to S2. I don't need the answers to anything really, I just need Lindelof to continue writing incredible vignettes of people and families trying to survive in this emotional apocalypse. Cannot wait for S3.

So after holding off watching the show because I had so much other **** going on. I finally got to watch it and in two days. I got through all of season two and it was so incredibly well done. It made want to cry at times, made me laugh, and cheer. When a tv show can take you through that gambit of emotions. To me that says it executed on every level of production. My favorite character is Nora and when she found baby Lily on that bridge and jumped on her to spare her from being trampled I still get chills thinking about it.

Season 1 was really great, but Season 2 has to be one of my favorite seasons of any tv-shows in recent memory.
