HBO Sci-Fi Series ‘’The Nevers’’

Just call it season f***ing 2 at that point, you jerks! :argh:

Glad production has FINALLY started, though, and a confirmation that it's not just 4 more episodes, lol.

It is definitely a contract thing. Remember in they heyday of the Sci-Fi channel when a season would be split among two different years?

While I rather liked the main character, the series itself was maybe just a little above OK from my perspective. I'm much more interested in seeing a new His Dark Materials or The Orville than this. It's a watch for me, but I find waiting a long time for these short series to come back rather annoying. D+ is the exception because even though they are different stories, they are centered around the same universe and if I see WV, I know it's followed soon after by TFATWS, Loki, etc.

I just finished watching this just now and I wasn’t expecting any of that in the last 2 episodes especially the last one. Wow. I am now even more sad Joss was removed from this show as I’m sure if it continues we won’t get what he initially planned. I’m glad for the 6 episodes though! Laura Donnelly and Amy Manson are both fantastic and a lot of the other actors are good too but I don’t know their names yet lol

I’m gonna have to rewatch the 6 episodes now to see stuff I missed!

Not to belabor the point (too late :ninja:) but… My original trivia question was this: Over Buffy’s run, are there any male equivalents to Kendra, Joyce, Tara and Anya? That is, a regular (or semi-regular) character who a) was a notable ally to Buffy and b) didn’t survive to the end of the series.

Actually… after racking my brain, I did come up with a candidate who meets both criteria: Larry. Appearing in several episodes, Larry was the jock/bully who reforms after coming out as gay. And though he was never really a Scooby, Larry was an ally (kinda) who died heroically in the big “Graduation Day” battle.

Of course, this might make Whedon guilty of another pop culture crime — the “bury your gays” trope. But that’s a different trivia question. :cwink:
If Larry counts then Jonathon does too who was in the show longer than some of the main cast members.

So weirdly enough this wasn't featured in the latest HBO Max promo with upcoming shows that was released a few days ago. Could it mean it's not coming back after all? Last I heard they started shooting the second part of the first season last June so they must have finished the whole thing for a while now. Also the ratings were pretty good and it's not a Max show. But nothing surprises me anymore with this new regime.

I.e., June of 2021. So, yeah... bought-and-paid-for (like Batgirl :ebr:) — might as well release the final six episodes. A season two, however, is a question mark.

Yeah, a second season was in doubt long before Zaslav took over. But them showing all their upcoming shows for this year and the next and not featuring this one, has me worried for the fate of the remaining, probably completed, episodes too. They even showed a snippet of the upcoming episodes back in January, so I don't know what's up with that now. Hope it's not another case of tax write-off.

Yeah its numbers were similar to Euphoria season 1 and it was considered HBO Max's biggest opening for an original show at the time. It's what makes it all the more baffling that they've buried this. I guess the controversy around it, even after Whedon's departure, could play a big part in this.

I mean, I can understand. Westworld and House of the Dragon sort of sucked up the air and budget (seriously, I don't expect HBO to have that much advertising budget left after the HOTD blitz).

Didn't the main star say that it would go into production early this year? Edit; nevermind she said it would go into production "soon" in a Deadline interview:

‘The Nevers’ Laura Donnelly Talks Finale & Series Future Post Joss Whedon – Deadline

And when does production start?
LD: Soon. It’s within the next few months this summer.

Not like they put a lot of advertising into pt.1 anyway

Yes. But that article is from May 2021. So the "soon/this summer" production start for part 2 refers to June 2021 — over a year ago. We might assume, therefore, that the remaining six episodes ("season 1B") are done and done.

It's not just speculation from the cast. It was confirmed by The Wrap that it started filming in June 2021 like they planned:

HBO’s ‘The Nevers’ Begins Production on Season 1B, New Episodes to Debut in 2022 (Exclusive) - The Wrap

HBO even showed footage of this last year, with all their upcoming shows (I think it was December after all, but I can't find the promo uploaded by the official channel).

Being the only thing that is missing now in their marketing is certainly an eyebrow-raiser.

I'll be surprised if this gets a season 2 so I hope they don't end season 1 unresolved.

Considering the very, very long wait time from when they surely finished this to now, they have had time to do a proper finale if they knew it was not going forward. It's been a year and I all but forgot this show even existed a few times.

Same here. Lol. If there is too big a gap between seasons, I lose track of shows or don't even bother picking them back up again.

HBO/Max released yet another promo that features all of their shows a few days ago and guess which was the only one missing again. On the other hand both Laura Donnelly and Denis O' Hare confirmed that the second part of the show is coming in December.

If true, it's completely baffling that they're showing zero promotional material for it. I can understand not wanting to spend much on marketing or invest a lot on the show's future due to behind the scenes drama, but this is totally absurd. Especially for a series that did really well on both their channel and their streaming service.

They didnt do much promo for the first half either. But in todays world where you can release trailers on YT/IG/Twitter for free? And get plenty of free promotion? Its not acceptable to not do ANYTHING.

Of all the things they threw away to get tax right offs, im surprised this wasnt one of them.

Well, the tax write-offs along with almost all the changes by the new regime happened on HBO Max projects and this is HBO proper, which is a division that Zaslav hasn't interfered much. Also there's a high chance that the second part was completely done with post production by the time Discovery took over.

The cancellation was expected, but straight up tossing it?

I guess that means there is some hope, but what the **** is Zaslav thinking?

And to think that it was the biggest show on HBO Max when it debuted. I suppose it was bound to happen due to all the drama around Whedon and even more so after Zazlav took over. The way the series didn't appear in any of the channel's marketing was kind of telling. I do hope we get to see the rest of the episodes at some point. I really liked this show.

I hope it show's up on Disney+. Feels like the perfect material for it, Victorian X-Men.
