Harry Potter Gets Serious
Daniel Radcliffe will play a slain photographer in Journey.
by Chris Tilly, IGN UK

UK, January 2, 2008 - Daniel Radcliffe is about to tackle his first truly grown-up role, playing slain photographer Dan Eldon in forthcoming drama Journey.

The Harry Potter star fought off competition from Orlando Bloom, Heath Ledger, Ryan Phillippe and Joaquin Phoenix to land the coveted role in the film, which will chronicle Eldon's journey to war-torn Somalia and his murder at the hands of an angry mob in 1993.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, Kathy Eldon, Dan's mother, refused to sell the rights to her son's story until she found exactly the right actor for the job.

"The timing is right and the person is right and I couldn't ask for more," explained Kathy. "He has portrayed a magician for years and my Dan was a different kind of magician. There are parallels in the two Dans' lives. Daniel Radcliffe is a poet, he keeps journals and he's half Jewish. He has a puckishness, sense of humour and energy inside him which remind me of Dan."

Radcliffe is set to play his most serious role yet in Journey.

Eldon was a keen photographer when he travelled to Kenya with a family friend to take pictures of refugees from the war in Somalia. In 1992 he went to the country on assignment for Reuters and his photographs helped draw attention to the escalating violence.

On the day he was due to return home to England, Eldon photographed the aftermath of a U.N. bomb that mistakenly killed 74 innocent Somalis. While there, a crowd of locals erupted in anger at the attack and surrounded, stoned and beat to death Eldon and three of his journalist colleagues.

Brownen Hughes (Forces of Nature, Harriet the Spy) will helm the pic, with Shine scribe Jan Sardi on writing duties.

This will be interesting...

Awesome, I'm happy that Radcliffe ain't just one of those actors who signs up for a movie franchise, sticks with it forever and then you never see him in another film again. And also he's such a terrific actor, just by watching the Harry Potter films back-to-back you can tell how much better he's gotten at what he does.

Well as long as he keeps his clothes on....

Actually, he's scheduled to reprise his role in Equus on Broadway this fall. :cwink:

Good for him, it's good to see him moving on to some adult roles.

At least he will be 18 this time.

LOL, at first glance I thought photographer was pornographer.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has fought off competition from Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom to land the lead role in a new movie about a slain photojournalist. The 22-year-old will appear as photographer Dan Eldon in Journey, a film chronicling the civil war in Somalia. Eldon was one of four journalists stoned to death by a mob in the African country in 1993. And Eldon's mother Kathy believes Radcliffe was the perfect choice to play her tragic son. She says, "We resisted a lot of older actors because Dan was a boy emerging into manhood." A compilation of Eldon's diaries - on which the film is based - has sold 200,000 copies since being published in 1997.

I wonder if they're suggesting he'll be 22 once this film actually comes out.

He's actually gotten better as an actor so good for the lad he's getting work outside the wizarding world.

Stomping with the big dogs, good for him.

Tza, the CT.

Certainly a powerful role for Radcliffe, he beat some big names to the part, even if it is weird that him and Joaquin Phoenix were in consideration for the same part. Director isn't exactly inspiring.

I agree. Fantastic to see that Radcliffe is also looking for work outside of HP and wants to be a serious actor instead of the kind, like you say, that just stick on to one franchise and don't really care about acting. And Dan has also grown immensely as an actor.

At least he will be 18 this time.

But jail bait is so much more fun.:csad:
