Yea, that whole 70's setting thing was nonsense to begin with. It all started with Fox's failed attempt at a Daredevil reboot, Joe Carnahan sizzle reel and all, which he wanted to set in a 70's New York.

Then, even after Marvel re-acquired Daredevil, for some reason the nerd blogsphere/media latched on to this concept and kept pushing the idea that they thought it would be cool to set Marvel's street level heroes in the 70's Hell's Kitchen when apparently everything was grittier, unlike today's much more refined Hell's Kitchen. This somehow went from "fan-tasizing" to "rumor" in everyone's collective consciousness. That's the main problem with "fan blogs"... many of them don't understand the difference between actual sourced/substantiated news/rumors and fanboy-based wish fulfillment. Thankfully, Marvel cleared this up now.

So now that Cox has been cast as DD, what are the chances we'll get Man Thing, Gladiator and Deathstalker?

What about Dominic Purcell, from Prison Break, as Gladiator?

Honestly, I think even from the getgo the idea was not to set in the 70s, but to give it a 70s movie *style*. You can do that in the present day just fine.

I guess he could work. I really want the iconic helmet, shoulder, wrist and leg spikes, and the whirling wrist blades. The blades probably would require CGI. I don't think that kind of imagery has ever been on film before, so it would look really cool.

BTW, the reason I mentioned Man Thing and Deathstalker in the same breath as Gladiator is because they were all in that classic story where DD fought Deathstalker and Gladiator in a Florida swamp and Man Thing showed up.

Plus hasn't there been a Man Thing reference in AOS before?

Dunno, i havent really followed AOS that much. I have only seen a few episodes, like 2 or 3.

There was near the end of the season... It was more of a throwaway line though.

I *really* doubt Man-Thing would ever show up in any of the Defenders shows, especially Daredevil. Even ignoring the power scale issue, he's just so utterly out-of-place in a street level superhero story focused on fighting crime.

He doesn't have to be Man Thing on the Netflix shows. He can be Ted Sallis.

But since he occupies the same world as the rest of the MCU, how can anyone from that universe be out of place? If Iron Man or Thor were to somehow show up in one of the shows, are you saying they'd be out of place too? It's not like DD and the other Netflix shows are their own thing separate from the rest of the MCU.

At least if it was set in the 70's, then Hell's Kitchen would actually look like, well Hell's Kitchen. At least the Hell's Kitchen that Marvel insists on pushing, as opposed to the quite nice place that it is these days.

Here's hoping Gordon Ramsay will show up.

To be precise, it was in episode 20 (the Maria Hill episode). Hill was talking on the phone with Pepper Potts after having just testified in front of Congress. She was talking about how annoying answering Senator's questions was and had this line about "having to explain what a Man-Thing is to them."

:applaud

Good point. Even though this is another corner of the MCU, it is still the MCU. That's the whole point.

Agents of SHIELD is like two different shows. It gets a lot better by episode 11.

Eh, each movie has its own unique style and tone. The same is probably true for Netflix series. Malekith would have been weird in a Captain America movie, which is more down to Earth, for example.

That being said, I think each Netflix series can have their own tone and style as well, so I have no problem with him having his own series. I just think it's weird in someone else's who doesn't have that tone.

I'm going to quote this excerpt from an interview with Frank Miller. He was talking about various Daredevil authors prior to his extremely successful run. He was praising some with how they inspired his work. However, while he praised people like Marv Wolfman, who brought the character to the urban level, he hated the work of people like Gerry Conway, who made the character a science fiction character. Essentially, science fiction with a character like Daredevil he found to be "silly" even though he wouldn't have a problem with some other character having stuff like that.

so what you are saying is that you cannot accept a hell's kitchen that is stuck in the past but are willing to accept that there is a blind-man superhero who happens to possess a "radar sense"?

And maybe the World Trade Center also still stands in the MCU version of New York.

Like most I've only seen Cox in Boardwalk Empire and he was pretty solid in that. Personally I'm really happy with this casting and look forward to what he does with it. Foggy next, please!

Its not a matter of the setting of the world, but the setting of the story. If you have a story about gritty investigation of, say, a drug dealing ring, with Daredevil trying to make connections, and gather enough evidence to have the leaders arrested? Having Iron Man come in, locate the perpetrator via superhacking, then fly to their warehouse and effortlessly smash all the villains? That breaks the theme of the story.
