Okay so what makes him blatantly the most heroic? What does he do that the others dont? He gets up close and hits stuff? Holds stuff up? He's ugly?
All the FF face the same dangers as Ben does. They have the same enemies, they go on the same adventures. Why is ben more heroic to you?
Because, while all of them have heroic tendancies, I am absolutetly positively sure that if one of them had to sacrifice themselves so the others would live, he would do it in a heartbeat, with no second thoughts. I know the others would as well, but what i'm trying to say is this:
He doesn't have the brains, he doesn't have the force sheilds, he can't turn invisible and he can't ignite himself to the intensity of a star. He is just him. He has added strength and durability, but even if he didn't have those things, he would give himself for the cause. He doesn't fight because he has powers, he would do that anyway, in whatever form he could.
He's consistantly well thought of throughout the Marvel Universe, with even Captain America calling him one of the best human beings he's EVER known.
Add to that he has to live his life as an outcast; more so than any other hero in the world; at least Bruce Banner can turn back into a human. Despite this, despite the fact he is made of rock and ugly as sin, he would still gladly fight for the people who (most likely) mock him, because it's the right thing to do. In the same way that Dare Devil has to deal with his crappy life, Ben has to deal with his condition.
I think that's the other thing about him. I don't see him as the Thing and Ben Grim, I just see him as Ben. Other heroes have divides in their lives, even if they're public heroes; Ben doesn't. He is stuck in his game face, and because of that he has no alter ego. He is Ben Grim, hero.
Heck, I don't even like the character, pretty much hate the FF, but even I recognise Ben Grim as one of the most Heroic characters in the MU.
