Just seen this hugely influential sci-fi mindjob for the first time, and whoa....what a film. After seeing it, The Matrix is atleast 20% less impressive. I thought I knew a lot about the influences of the Wachowski movie, but Dark City is clearly number one now.

Alex Proyas is surely the man to take over the Batman franchise when Nolan eventually leaves.

Highly underrated movie. One of my favorites. I'm always amazed at how many people have never heard of this show.

Um...yes.

The Truman Show covers all the same territory minus the pointless goth.

Truman Show > Dark City

It's not pointless goth. It's art. At it's core, the look of Dark City is in line with German expressionist films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

The only thing that Truman Show and Dark City have in common is that the city in which they live in are fabricated cities.

-DC was a fabricated city to house humans for the purposes of running experiments on them. Truman was for a TV show so everyone could watch Truman.

-In DC only the Strangers know what the city really is...a few humans like John Murdock suspect...but don't know for sure. In Truman, Everyone but Truman knows.

"The strangers" in Dark City play the same role as the "actors" in the Truman Show. Is there any meaningful messages in Dark City that can't be found in the Truman Show?

love the shell beach ending i wish that happen to me in real life

Dark City was uber cool. Too bad it wasn't a run away money making block buster. But that's what cult followings are for I guess.

The trailers for the first X-men movie used Dark City music you know.

Yes,

DC: True love cannot be faked.
The movie is about a group of aliens/demons studying the human nature. They took all these people and impanted memories and changed their surroundings to see how they react. They were looking for consistencies within human nature. They found it. The true love between Sewell and Connelly went beyond what the strangers could control. The fact that Sewell could act like the strangers was just for the story but you see this meaning come to full length when they meet at the end like the first time and ultimately fall in love (assumingly)

TTS: the human mind is adventurous
DC and TS are built arround the same subject: Human Nature. In TS, a boy raised in a controlled enviornment is tested to see how he would react to the perfect society. He hated it, which is strange since its perfect. It proves that the human mind is meant to learn and experience and emote the bad as well as the good. You might think it means true love cannot be faked since his wife is an actor and he loves the girl on the outside, but true love is never truly questioned. Instead life in general is questioned.

In reality they are two different theories for the same subject.

btw. Dark City was super cool. I was a little unimpressed with the ending. I found it to be acutally sad that they were stuck on this wierd space station thing.

Love that movie and watch it on dvd now and then

I want the guy who directed Dark City to direct a "Nevermen" movie. Either him or Terry Gilliam...

Truman Show > Dark City

do you want to sit there and list every movie that takes this same basic premise? what a ridiculous and wasteful argument. the movies are so different in terms of purpose and presentation that any comparison like that is just pointless...but...
Dark City>>Truman Show.

Interesting little fact from IMDB: Sets from Dark City were later used in the Matrix.

I think I named this as my favorite movie that bombed in another thread. Every time it's on I have to watch it. Great movie.

I thought they already did?

I never heard anything about that but I would LOVE to see a director's cut. The only problem I had with the movie was the begining of the film was a bit to fast. Like the paseing (sp?) needed to slow down but some would say it's there for a reason but I just don't see why. The commentary one of the writers said the same thing though, that he wished they would have slowed down the begining.
