From Dark Horizons:-

Some interesting rumours have popped up recently over at fansite Batman on Film, most of which sounds quite reasonable and perfectly understandable considering the context.

According to them, director Chris Nolan is looking into beefing up the character of gangster Sal Maroni in the upcoming "Batman Begins" sequel "The Dark Knight", which is set to begin filming shortly.

In the comics, Maroni is the one who originally throws acid at D.A. Harvey Dent, scarring his face which leads to him becoming the gangster Two-Face. As we know Dent is being played by Eckhart in the film and the apparent scarring is rumoured to be taking place at the film's end.

The idea sounds like Maroni will have upgraded to one of the bigger supporting character roles, much like that of Tom Wilkinson as mobster Carmine Falcone in 'Begins'.

On top of that Sopranos lead man James Gandolfini is rumoured to be up for the part, as is Aussie actor Alan Dale who is said to be having a small role as some sort of villain in the film anyhow (whether that's Maroni, or someone else is unsure), and singer Stacey 'Fergie' Feguson of Black-Eyed Peas fame. (NOT true, according to Jett.

Finally another bit of gossip has emerged that the plot is somewhat based on the comic story 'Joker's Five-Way Revenge' in which The Joker, having recently escaped state hospital, hunts down members of his old gang after one of them betrayed him to the police and Batman must stop him. If Maroni is one of those gangsters, this approach makes a whole lot of sense.

Doubt the Gandolfini thing is true - he's great at playing a New Jersey mob boss, but a high-class type?

Plot idea combined with the side information all fits - Joker is after Maroni, holding the city at ransom, complete chaos everywhere - only Batman can stop him.

i really like the idea of Joker being dumped in a chemical vat by mobsters, but then taking revenge on them.

Interesting. Some of this I've heard before and I was hoping Gandolfini would be Harvey Bullock instead.

Gandolfini playing Maroni would be a mistake IMO b/c he would be repeating Tony Soprano all over again. Yeah, I know he's a good actor and he can add nuances to the part so that it isn't a copy of Soprano, blah blah blah. But, I just don't believe Nolan would cast him as Maroni, its far too predictable.

But as Bullock, that's a different story and would work if true.

Sounds great, I can't to see on big screen. I also agree that Gandolfini should be Bullock instead but we already have Flass is "Bullock type of a guy.

WAit a minute did I hear someone say that the fergie thing is true? O-M-G.. Please someone clarify this.

I think Flass might be fired from GPD in TDK, but not sure and I agree that Gandolfini would make a great Bullock. I don't belive he's ever played a good guy before..or has he?

The only thing I've seen him in is the sopranos and 9mm where he plays some perv.

I know him mostly from True Romance where he played a very very F'ed up character (like Tony Soprano but a lot meaner).

He wasnt a bad guy in Surviving Christmas, just grumpy.

Well, the news sounds good. I like "the Joker is out for revenge" idea (after all, it worked great in "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge" and in "The Man Who Laughs").

I highly doubt Gandolfini as well. Too much of a typecast and that is not really Nolans style. Now someone like Ray Liotta I can definitely see in the role. He is a solid supporting actor and he would excel at playing a true mob boss. Dispite what some of you think in regards to Liotta being typcast if he gets the Maroni role. That wouldn't be true....Liotta has never played a true mob BOSS before. His schedule seems full right now however. Rufus Sewell would a great choice for Maroni as well IMO.

So Maroni has 'a bigger supporting role'? Well I could haver told you that.

I wouldnt mind seeing Gandolfini as Bullock. I think he'd be great in that role. He kinda has that quality where he can play a character that you really shouldnt like, but you cant help not to.

Oh, the Fergie thing. She was quoted as saying that she wouldnt mind doing a little acting and was actually up for a role where she gets to play a huge animal lover with alot of sass and class.(There was an article in one of those music mags, my co worker showed it to me.) When I read the rumor thing on BoF, I just thought it a strange coincidence.

Agreed, Liotta is a class act!

oooh OK. Whew! you had me worried there.

Glad it was just something someone misconstrued instead of being factual.
