Darren Aronofsky is taking on The Wrestler

I didn't cry either. There was some audible "awww"-ing at my theater when he gave that last talk to Marisa Tomei, though.

I really hope Mickey wins. Sean Penn was amazing in Milk, but Mickey's was just the best performance of the year.

Slumdog definitely deserves Best Picture if it wins, but I would have loved to see this get a nomination as well. I hate wrestling, but I loved this movie. That's how good it was.

Guess no one knows the answer to my question I take it?

I know quite a few people who found it online and downloaded it, but I want to see it on the big screen or get the DVD. I was very disappointed that the theatre I am employed at didn't get the film.

I have no idea when the DVD is coming out.

I work in NY, so we get the limited releases early. I saw it at the beginning of January. It was sold out too, there were a few people standing for the whole movie because they couldn't find seats together.

The theater near where I live in NJ got it during the wider release after the Oscar nominations were announced.

I'm assuming it will be out before the summer.

Really? The Wrestler sold out? Wow. Most films like that don't sell out a theatre. We had a couple of people asking about it too. But we only get films that make big money and are no brainers. Usually the big action films, horror films, and etc.

I do have a question though.

I know I said if Heath doesn't win for his performance it will be a robbery. But would it be a true injustice if Mickey didn't win as well?

Yep, it was sold out. It was the only place in the city that was showing the movie, and it's NY - movies like that get a lot of buzz here. They sell out a lot of the time, especially the limited releases. It was also in the smallest theater - the upper part of the auditorium only has 3 rows.

I don't think it would be an "injustice" if Sean Penn won over Mickey. He was brilliant in Milk and he definitely is deserving of the award too. I would just prefer it if Mickey won.

I'm still mad Springsteen got snubbed for the song. It's not even because I'm huge Bruce fan, it's just that song so embodied the movie it really doesn't make sense why it was left out. I loved end credits song in Slumdog, but I don't get why the second song from Slumdog was nominated over Bruce's song.

I do think Heath is going to win. He deserves it. (and I thought he should have won for Brokeback Mountain too)

But why did their issues need to be anything more elaborate than the fact that he just wasn't there for her?
It didn't NEED to be, but it probably SHOULD have been.
"You weren't there for me" is a comparatively thin motivation in a film that otherwise has some depth to it.
Not being there for a birthday may be "thin", but they're important to a daughter whose father never bothered to show up for one.
I'm not, and was never referring to her meltdown when he doesn't show up for her dinner. That meltdown makes perfect sense, because it's been built over the course of the film.

You spend a lifetime being disappointed by someone, you're more likely to blow up at them when they try to come back into your life rather than let them back in and be inevitably disappointed again.
Maybe. But "more likely" doesn't a compelling scene or a well crafted one make. You know what I didn't see in the scene where she first blows up at her father? Any motivation. She just gets angry quickly, and turns into a raging hosebeast.

It showed how important it was that he be there for that dinner, and how unforgivable it was when he missed it.

Sure, and that's fine. But you know what I trhought when she blew up on him after he missed the dinner?

"Oh, she's doing THAT again."

And I thought about how much more satisfying it would have been had the director BUILT this element of her character, built tension, had her WANT to give him a chance, and THEN dropped her losing it on us.

Having already seen her lose it once, the second time she did, it just wasn't all that compelling or special. It was, in fact, expected.

Can you imagine if Christian Bale's "breakdown" had come at the beginning of AMERICAN PSYCHO? :)

Yes. Mickey worked his ass off. In order to to really get into the role, he had to revisit some of his own real life demons to get the pain The Ram was going through down. This is no easy feat for an actor, especially one with as troubled a past as his.

Furthermore, his nomination (and win, if he gets it) is long overdue. Rourke gave some of the most inspired performances of the 1980s' - Motorcycle Boy in Rumble Fish, John Gray in 9 1/2 Weeks, Harry Angel in Angel Heart (where he stole the entire film from De Niro), Henry Chinaski in Barfly, and so many other great roles that were sadly overlooked for various reasons (namely Rourke's attitude towards studio politics). Rourke was easily that generation's Brando, taking risky, edgy parts while his contemporaries dabbled in teen fluff and shoot-'em-up action thrillers. He should've won one at least 20 years ago.

And lastly, if Penn wins, it won't be on merit. As great as Penn was, his role didn't pack the emotional punch Rourke did. If he does get it, it's because of the affects and influence of Prop. 8 politics and Penn's favorable standings among Academy honchos and other Hollywood power players, which have as much to do with his political stances as well as his acting abilities. Plus, Penn won an Oscar already, and like Rourke, I felt it was one that was overdue and overall deserved.

This is Rourke's award, and it would be a travesty if he lost.

[snippage...]

Hadn't he just told her he had a heart attack? and then she flipped out

Then it's not just "you weren't there for me", it's "you weren't there for me and now you're starting to fall apart and you expect me to be there for you"

Or am I remembering wrong??

I think the whole Prop 8 thing has been shifting the momentum in Penn's direction. Which is ridiculous - they couldn't stop the vote from passing, so they're going to make up for it by giving Sean Penn an Oscar? Like I overheard someone saying when I was leaving Milk, if Harvey Milk was around today, Prop 8 probably never would have been passed. Giving the movie a bunch of awards is not going to make that situation any better.

Just watched this on DVD. Pretty good. I really liked Mickey Rourke's performance. The story was pretty good. A little cliche but good.

I know I'm super late to the party, but I finally got around to watching this. It was amazing and incredibly depressing.
