I imagine the kind of world Nolan created with his Batman series, and introducing a character like Superman into it. I think it'll really add to the astonishment of seeing a man with these abilities. Somewhat similar to how Donner introduced Superman. The world of Metropolis felt like a real city with real people, and the helicopter accident seemed pretty plausible. Then suddenly you see this man lift into the sky and catch the woman in an the helicopter. It's still astounding to me even when I watch it today.

^^ So true. I mean in Nolan's world of Batman, if Superman existed people would flip out. They would probably be terrified at first. This is kind of a stretch, but Superman can be part of that "escalation" talk that Gordon and Batman had on the roof in BB. Superman being the ultimate escalation for the good guys. Maybe in Batman 3 it becomes obvious with the rise of Super-villains, and even more escalation, that Batman needs some serious help...then arrives Superman to balance out all the evil escalation...and so the war rages on...

So? He could sell less and yet he sells even more. What does it have to do with the fact that Bruce will be back in a year or two?
Dickbats is nothing like Bruce, the setting, tone and villains are all different, and yet everybody loves it. Many fans are even asking DC to delay Bruce's return.

So its not true to Batman's core and yet everybody loves B&R. Your arguement that true to the core = better is invalid.

It's not getting away from Batman's core because Dick is not Batman. If they had Dick acting like Bruce, then they would be writing Dick wrong and they would be deviating from his core. Everyone knows this is a temporary situation and Bruce Wayne will be Batman.

There is just no reasoning with you. Dick is not Batman? Really? Then why are so many fans wishing that Bruce never comes back or at least comes back a lot later?

It's a very long story, but essentially after the crisis, Superman was retconned. His powers were explained in new ways and his power level was lowered. It was an attempt to make a more modern take on the character and to make him more human.

And now much of it had been abandoned.

Does it really matter? Beyond a few truly great Superman stories from specific writers, I couldn't care less about DC comics continuity. DC's universe is just one big convoluted mess, where things are changed just so that they can be brought back to the status quo later.

Not really. Every continuity informs the next one. The retcon has been folded into the rest of the history of the character along with Birthright. Then you also have to take into account that we have the other origin coming from JMS. I know that's not supposed to necessarily be canon, but it's yet another retcon. A retcon within a retcon if you will. Some aspects may have been abandoned, but don't just disregard the entire thing because you prefer another.

Yeah, that's why I said much, not all. A great deal of the Silver Age stuff has been reintroduced. I still am not sure if they are going to end up with a compromise that most people like or if they are just going to continue with the schism that has existed since 1986.

I honestly don't know where it will go. It's not really a new continuity, it feels more like a literal smoosh of all the former continuities. I know Johns was supposed to clear all this stuff up recently, but it still feels like a big mess in some ways.

I think it's pretty safe to say that anything pre-crisis other than parts of the origin (if they can even use it) will have no influence on the new film.

Hopefully in this movie they'll use the best ideas from the characters entire history as they've done with Batman. I usually don't trust Batman guys with Supes, but until Nolan lets me down I feel I gotta trust him.

We want to enjoy our greatest hero. We don't need someone coming in and telling us how 'back in the day' he did this and that; times have changed. And they'll keep changing.

Flash doesn't need a vegetable strainer on his head.
Green lantern doesn't need a cape.
Superman doesn't need to act like a jerk, when he is one of the greatest heroes of all time. If he acted like a jerk, he wouldn't be the symbol of justice he is today, would he?

The changes in Superman have nothing to do with modern changes in ethics or morals. They have to do with changes in who he is as a person. They were wrongheaded decisions in 1986, IMO, and they continue to be wrong today. And because they were bad decisions, many of them have been undone.
