Were my ears deceiving me or was Hugh channeling Steve Blum for a second when he said "Come on Beastie..."? What a nice little surprise.
On another note, who else loves the cinematography in this film? Not a fan of the supersaturated future, but the past is so rich and diverse with color, yet sombre and moody at the same time. I especially love how the cinematographer emphasizes the actor's emotions by placing the right amount of shadow on their face at the right time. i always admired that about Singer's DP.
This. I didn't really think Singer's first two X-Men movies were all that cinematographically. Of course, times were different back then and he wanted a lot more of that gritty, muted feel to the movie but Singer and Newton have definitely amped up their game in order to compete with the caliber of comic book movies that come out today. The set pieces, the lighting, the costumes, the vibrancy of the past and the bleakness of the future looks superb and I can already sense tumblr folk salivating over the prospects of making 3x2 gifsets out of the work in the film. I'm salivating over the Magneto escape sequence actually. From seeing Quicksilver to the scene where the glass roof is falling in slow motion (I wonder if that shot that scene with the same FPS as he shot Evan Peter's running scene), it just looks like it has such awesome cinematography.
I think it's also good that it connects visually with how First Class looked. First Class was also really vibrant and saturated so I'm glad that it doesn't look drastically different and maintains some semblance of visual continuity.
Hugh's 70's hair and 2023 hair is glorious, and his dialogue! It's so classic Wolverine. Judging by just the clips released, Wolverine's characterization in the film is top notch. He doesn't have to be brooding over Jean anymore since we ended that story in The Wolverine, and now we just get tons of Wolverine having fun in the past where it is a little less bleak.
JLaw's scene with Dinklage was pretty good. Edited to hell though so it just looks choppy but it's good to see that Mystique back. (But with an actual backstory!)
I'm really excited for Fassy again too. I actually enjoyed his Irish-German accent in FC near the end of the film but it wasn't that jarring to me when he switched back to evoke McKellen. He articulates and ends his word very similar to McKellen, and the more I focus the more I hear Ian's voice in Fassy's voice. I'm loving the interactions between Charles and Erik though, I think McAvoy and Fassbender might be the best casting choices in a superhero film since RDJ/Ledger in '08.
