DC Animated - All-Star Superman

Quietly's art for me for the most part sucks.

I think Quitely is a great artist. His style may not be the best suited for superhero-stories, but as an comic book artist he is damn good.

I just saw this.
I didnt like it too much

I thought it was way too jumpy. It seems like multiple stories were crammed into one. The voice acting was decent, the action was meh/not enough, the story of Superman dying was interesting but it got sidetracked by too many random villains/plot points

Someone told me that if you didnt read the source material (like me) than it might not seem as good so maybe that's it. But this is definetly my least favorite of the DC Universe Animated films

4-5/10

Having never read the comic it's based on, I thought this animated film was the second best behind Green Lantern.

Yes, I could tell it was jumpy but there was a lot of emotion to the piece. I thought the animation was stellar...up there with Green Lantern.

I'm now very eager to actually read the comic the film is based on to get the full story.

I just watched it as well and i didnt like it either.

I dunno, i always though of AS-S as a farewell ode to him, facing off against most of his villains in a series of challenges until he passed on. However if you just read the book or watch this without knowing much about Superman or the purpose of the book it would just seem like some random stories patched together with no ulterior meaning. That's where the movie will fail, especially when some chapters parts of the book are (understandably) omitted. "Where do the other Kryptonians fit in", "who is that sun guy out of nowhere", "why is Jimmy dressed like that", and so on.

What i mean is that you need to have at least read some Superman comics and know of all the stories that Morrison is putting together here, the fact that he's using the funky Jimmy from the old comics and all that.

Besides that i somehow felt that it was cheaply made. I thought that the voice acting was poor and i think that there were no background noises most of the time so it felt like the characters were speaking in a vacuum and not the real world. I dunno...

Finally, i'd just like to comment on the Leo=Lex thing. Morrison left the book's ending ambiguous but here we clearly see Lex remorseful and being the one actually solving the problem of SM's succession. In the comics Superman solves it and entrusts it to Leo, with Leo asking him how could he entrust him with such an important thing with Superman replying "i think i'm a good judge of character". I think that clearly implies that its Lex, seeing that Leo is supposed to be benevolent anyway, so why would he ask? Superman is a good judge of character and he "really thought that it would end like this" for Lex. That there was hope for him.

The movie just went with the more conventional approach of actually showing Lex changing and taking care of Superman's and Lois' offspring issue.

If you wanna know more about this Leo=Lex issue, go here. It already explains the similar coats they wear but i dont think it explains the colours of Leo's. I've read elsewhere that all the colours symbolize what Lex saw when he could see things the way Superman did. There's a lot more than that of course, so give it a read.

If Superman's dying from an energy overdose, why doesn't he let the Parasite absorb his energy?

that's actually a very smart question, didn't think about that...

But what possible way is there to escape from Parasite after he starts absorbing all that energy? seems like one would be rather ****ed otherwise

Oh I forgot about Parasite. Such a pointless fight and his design was atrocious

They either need to makes these movies longer or stop adapting such complicated stories. Stick to simpler stories like Batman Year one.

Call Batman. :awesome:

The design was copied from the book. Disgusting but it worked.

As for the fight, well a lot of things feel rather random until you start analyzing how all this fits together.

On a superficial level Parasite provided some excitement and action in the prison scene. It was hilarious seeing Clark covertly saving Lex while putting up with his demeaning attitude.
"Come with me if you want to live."

O'RLY Lex? :funny:

I quite enjoyed this. And it really made me want a new Superman animated series.

Never read the series. This was the first adaptation that I didn't know beforehand what was going on. I rather enjoyed this. It's not often where you get a Superman story where he uses his brain.

This was an excellent adaptation but I would have had the
PA Kent dying story
instead of the
bad kryptonians
. Also annoyed they didn't show the
Kandorians on their new planet
and in the
childrens cancer ward
.

Great as it was, it would have worked better as a TV series I think.

Agreed. I've pretty much given up with these movies, they're too rushed for me.

I found this DTV to be very disappointing.

It seems that this need to fit their time so they play it in a 2-hour block on CN has once again hurt another film. It's like the comic in fast forward. They were pretty much screwed with that. Since the story is fairly episodic, they could've gone the Gotham Knight route to fix the singular story issue, but again the time limit doesn't work.

I had a feeling they would drop some of the "out there" elements, but I didn't think they'd drop simple things like that floating train or even Jimmy having a jet pack. I thought they made it look like Superman killed Solaris out of revenge instead of simply beating him. Since they took out the Superman Squad element, they didn't note that he'd later be reprogrammed and be a force of good. Just simply dead in this story. Very odd.

The biggest reason I loved this comic is that it showed how great of a guy Superman is. The Pa Kent story, cancer patients, and Reagen especially could've been used easily. It's like the Kryptonians were just there to add action to a story that doesn't have much of it compared to others or at least doesn't feel like it.

The voice acting was ok with Lex being the best and Superman the worse for me. This was the first time I felt Superman has ever sounded pretty boring.

I haven't read the link that Earle posted, but I've heard the idea of Leo being evil. Leo=Lex is an interesting point of view. I don't agree with either one though. I'd go with the idea that Superman is a good judge of character. I always thought Lex was someone who'd relish in the fact that Superman would know that he's done something evil against him. Other than that, there's the concept of the Superman Squad, so we can see Superman's example was influential in them being good as opposed to evil if Leo or Lex planned for it. At some point he had to realize the the leader was his future self. Maybe Morrison made them similar just to symbolize the good and evil of humans.

Like all the past DTVs, it's been leaked.

okay i am SOOOOOOOO glad i am not the only one who was grossly disappointed.

the only thing i can say i didn't like along with this by DC is Superman/Shazam.

The plot was all OVER the place
The voice acting was good but it didnt fit the characters.
YES I WANTED CLANCY BROWN

I am also someone who never read All Star Superman and so i gladly went into this like HEY this should be a cool superman movie, and man was i let down.
:(
i guess DC cant bat 1000 all the time

I just saw the movie. I liked it. I haven't read the comics so I went in without any knowledge of the story other than Superman dying. I do agree that it seemed like there were random stories tied together but I loved seeing Clark Kent and Lex Luthor interact. That was probably my favorite part. It wasn't the best DC Animated movie but I enjoyed it.

It was ok...but I wouldnt watch it again until it is fully out of my memory. But I didnt really like Superman that much during this movie. He acted like a kid in a grown mans body.

Me too!

The pa Kent part would have added a lot more time to the series and it would have felt irrelevant.

The cancer ward would have been easy to do and very nice to see.
