DC Animated - Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

i don't think they should do this story. absolute power was a much darker story, and would fit better in an animated movie, i think.

i kinda thought they'd do the judas contract next. that was a big story that was dumbed down for the teen titans cartoon. there are so many other stories they could do though. knightfall, a watchmen ripoff with the charlton characters that inspired watchmen(jk),crisis on infinite earths as a series of movies, batman: hush as series of movies, redo the death of superman/reign of the supermen, batman:no man's land, i could go on...

what they shouldn't do is dumb down the story just for the sake of time. how much more money would it take to create a 2 hour version? with all that dark night money i think wb can do anything right now.

That's what I'm saying. This stuff needs to be longer. New Frontier suffered greatly because of the time restraints.

I like the sound of this, and I would love a team up between Batman and Superman.

I think this could be good in the classic Timm-style, though McGuinness'designs are awesome in my opinion.

If Clancy Brown is in as Luthor though, ,this is already bought!

This is awesome! I have the comic book and I love it. I think this would make a great PG-13 animated movie!

Praying for Kevin Conroy (Bats) and Clancy Brown (Lex) to be reprising their voice talents. Please!!! :)

I desperately hope not. Yes, they were great. Fans need to move the hell on (every single time DC does a new Batman animated anything there's invariably a ton of "Where's Conroy?" threads).

Public Enemies is a great premise for a story (the fall of the Luthor presidency), but the source material is incredibly stupid (McGuinness' cartoony art fits Loeb's brainless writing to a T); no doubt Timm and co. can improve on that and find the better story beneath it.

Agreed. I'd prefer to see someone new pick up the role.

:lmao:

I love irony, how'd you know?

It's been known for a while that Public Enemies would be next. The Judas Contract may eventually be made, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

redo the death of superman/reign of the supermen
Not gonna happen.

More than double the current budgets, and they're obviously not going to say, "Hey, let's take some of the money we made from The Dark Knight and blow up the business model for the animated DTVs by spending way too much on them." 70-75 minutes is standard for animated DTVs throughout the industry. At best we may get the odd release that goes up to just over 80 minutes.

From Aint It Cool News:

Hey folks, Harry here with the scoop on the next animated film scheduled for release in the Fall of 2009 from Warner Animation. This time it is SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES based upon the Jeff Loeb and Ed McGuinness comic series. Bruce Timm is the Executive Producer on the film and is currently actually in production!!! Here's the logo and the plot synopsis that I got my grubby hands upon!

SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES:
United States President Lex Luthor uses the oncoming trajectory of a
kryptonite asteroid to frame Superman and declare a $1 billion bounty
on the heads of the Man of Steel and his “partner in crime” Batman.
Super heroes and super villains alike launch a relentless pursuit of
Superman and Batman, who must unite – and recruit super help – to
stave off the action-packed onslaught, stop the asteroid, and uncover
Luthor’s devious plot to take command of far more than North America.

****ing AWESOME!!! I can't wait! I loved this storyarc!

And with so many jackhole presidents in recent history, the timing is perfect! :D

100% agreed!!! And what an awful decision to use Conroy for "Gotham Knight". :down Not using Bale is fine, but should have just used an unknown, not Conroy.

Someone who sounded like Bale would have been fine by me.

I just find it terribly ironic how many people are so against "cartoony" depictions of comic book characters, who are themselves cartoon characters essentially. Plus, you say you want different people involved with the voices (which I agreed with) but still rely on Timm, who's been around forever when it comes to DCU animation.

Loeb's writing has been hit or miss, I'll admit, but the comic version of this story was great. Sure, the plot was a little weak in some spots, but the main purpose of the story was to show the relationship between the two men, which was done wonderfully.

I never liked the Loeb/McGuinness comic...

I don't find it ironic at all. I think the way McGuinness drew these characters in this story is ridiculous. I just don't find it appealing at all. Those too many muscles are... ugh. It's too exagerated. If they go with this design, it will seriously be a huge let down to me. And that'd be very sad cuz I really wanna love the movie.

Oh crap. Totally forgot that McGuinness was behind this arc. I hope to hell they use the same art style they've used for the past DTV's, because I cannot stand his work. :(

I don't mind McGuinness' art; it's just suited to Loeb's story, which is a brainless "fun" punch-up; the fall of the Luthor Presidency should have been a far more serious and better story than it was.

That's just acknowleding that Timm is supervising this, which he is.

Having characters act stupidly but constantly talk up how important and iconic they are gets old real quick.

If 'Gotham Knight' really bridges the gap between Batman Begins and Dark Knight, then they should have used Christian Bale's voice. Conroy is great as Batman, but he is not the only voice talent out there that can represent Batman best. I really hope they find some other talents for this DVD release and not just re-cycling voice talents from JLU.

Christian Bale wasn't available to provide the voice acting for Gotham Knight.

^That's fine but they should not have used Conroy then, it was dumb. Should have just used unknown voice talent.

I agree about using Conroy for Gotham Knights being a mistake. It was too distracting and made me associate the film more to Batman: The Animated Series than the Chris Nolan franchise. They should have hired an unknown who sounded similar to Bale... except maybe with a little better diction in his "bat" voice. LOL

Conroy did okay, but I agree that they should have gone with another voice. Also, if they'd firmly established that they wouldn't be using DCAU voice actors in the DC Universe line it might have spared us the incessant chatter calling for those actors, especially Conroy, to be used for these movies.

I am totally psyched about this movie. I hope they keep it close to the original design.
I love his art. I think it would totally work as a animation style.

thanks for the info
:csad: I strongly disagree. Superman looks soo cartoony. I hope they go with a more realistic design, honestly. Sorry.

A more realistic art design would require more attention, more time, more money too. More realism makes animation harder to do. Thats why cartoon characters have four fingers instead of five on each hand, and why Doomsday didn't have as many bones on him (especially his eyes).
Even in computer animation, simple designs = better animation.
More detail and realism = stiffer and harder animation.
Usually.

The cartoony style of the comic would be perfect, like Darwyn Cook's designs for New Frontier. It would be cool to try and keep the design close to the original material.
Plus its a cartoon movie, based on a cartoony design.

Basically. Realism has no business being involved in this feature. If that means some of you wont buy it, so be it. Losers. :o :p
