DC Universe Classics

There's a whole long involved story behind it. The reason Captain Marvel's titles is always Shazam something is because Marvel trademarked Captain Marvel in the 70's. Like they trademarked having the name Captain Marvel anywhere on a comic cover. It's also why you'll see Marvel putting out Captain Marvel comics every 4 years or so. As the life of a trademark these days is 5 years.

The thing was , the original publisher's (DC?) of CM in the 40's had somehow screwed up and the Capt. Marvel name was not properly copyrighted and were in litigation for an awful long time, with the result being no copyright, naturally, when Marvel discovered this fact in the 70's they naturally swooped in and took up the copyright. With a name like Captain Marvel, it was almost like it was fated to be so.

Actually in the 40's DC would send a cease-and-desist letter to anyone publishing a character they felt was too close to Superman (super strength and a bright coloured suit with underwear on the outside or a cape was all it took). Fox Publications Wonder man and Fawcett's Master Man and Captain Marvel were all rubbed out by DC for being too close to Superman. Like Fox Publications Fawcett folded on Master Man, they just stopped publishing them. But Captain Marvel was gravy train for Fawcett. Odd as this may sound Captain Marvel in the 40's was more popular than Superman. Captain Marvel Adventures (his solo title) out sold everything superhero related 13 million copy's in 1944. And 1.4 million copies an issue.

Anyway after the cease-and-desist letter DC filed a law-suit in 1941. The trial was in 1948. The judge sided with Fawcett. Because appearantly Superman wasn't copyrighted. Some newspaper strips hadn't been copyrighted, and thus DC's copyrights on Superman were ruled invalid. But the judge also ruled that Captain Marvel was an illegal copy of Superman. Fast 4 years, DC comes back with properly copyrighted Superman and gets the previous verdict over turned on appeal. Fawcett was ordered to stop puplication of Captain Marvel comics in 1952. 20 years later (1972) DC got the license to publish Captain Marvel and his related characters. And in 1980 bought the characters outright. 5 years earlier Marvel started publishing a Captain Marvel titles. And naturally trademarked the title "Captain Marvel."

Dr. Impossible and how much? Hawkman looks really nice, I've always loved that helmet design. Captain Marvel too, they call him Shazam because Marvel (unsurprisingly) has copyrighted the hell out of the name Captain Marvel.

Dr. Impossible! thats it!

As for price, not to sure prolly above 10 bucks possibly close to the 12-14 dollar range as thats usually what the superhero figures go for there.

I love Shazam as well and was debating on picking some of these up my only problems are that while I love this line, in canda we either never get them or we get stuck with one wave for a looonnggg time.

Sorry if this was mentioned already but who is the BAF for wave 9?

Chemo. A huge sack toxic chemicals. Which naturally gains sentience and goes on rampages.

Hmmm which comics is he from? I remember seeing pics of him from NYCC and I thought he looked pretty cool. Was he in any of the batman brave and the bold cartoon episodes? Cause I know there was something that gave batman a disease in an episode and atom and aquaman had to travel inside batman. Sorry bit off topic ;p

Metalmen. And yeah his is in that episode of Brave and the Bold.

So TRU's in Canada have started selling this line again. Wave 6 being spotted in Ontario. Colour me shocked. :wow:
You are correct. I live in Ontario and my TRU got 2 boxes in. I just needed the variants, so I picked those up.

Also, yesterday my TRU got a shipment of DCU 2 packs!
So I picked up Batgirl and Azrael, Cyborg Supes and Mongul, Orion and Lightray, GL and Aubin Sur. Those were the only ones they got. There were 4 boxes of those. It's about time we're getting these things in! It sucks we missed out on waves 2-5 though.

For what? Wave 6 mullet Superman in classics costume and Dr. Impossible.

I found GL in a comic store as well, but it was the reissue. Was the GL you found from wave 3 or was it the reissue? I looked everywhere for wave 3 but never found it.

I started collecting comic book figures again recently and the only DCU figure I have so far is the Wave 1 Penguin. One of my Target stores had a Wave 2 Harley Quinn when I checked there a few weeks back but I didn't have the money for her. I'll check there again soon to see if she's there.

Here's hoping she's still there for you bro. I doubt it.

I have an extra if you want her for retail + shipping

Thanks guys, and SSM, I appreciate that. I think Wednesday I'll head down there and see if she's there. If not, I'll get back to you and let you know. Thanks again :)

Is Harley hard to find or something?

I've seen her a few times but held off because the blue face bothers me..if it was white it'd be one of the most perfect Harley toys ever.

Harley seems kind of hard to find and when I look for her online she goes for quite a lot.
