Through pure cosmic wonder, there are only 2 things by Loeb I'd experienced prior to Ultimates 3. The first was two trades of Superman/Batman. I liked the Supergirl story (the last time I'd enjoy the character, apparently), but hated the Public Enemies story. The second thing was the TV show Heroes, which I love.

Simply put, I didn't have prior knowledge that Jeph Loeb sucked that badly.

Wow, you've managed to only read bad Loeb. You should go hunt his stuff with Tim Sale and basically anything pre-Hush. The guy is a great writer he just hasn't been putting out any good stuff for a while now.
